Mail & Guardian Friday the 14th of November…
An llustration done by Studio Rudo for an anti-ad campaign. Women’s insecurities are targeted by advertisers and the offering is more often than not an alternative to self. Eurocentric advertising in an african context diminishes African perspective on what beauty is. Rationale: The thinking behind this particular illustration was from my vantage point as a young African woman… How cosmetic products are advertised and encourage an alternative to self and perpetuate an ideal/mould that all women should pursue. I’ve included subtle messages within the illustration eg. The T.I.A stamp (This is Africa), emphasizing the rejection of eurocentric marketing in the African context. The shattered TV screens (anti advertising), and the “no lies” flash which is a play on a certain hair relaxer’s tagline. I believe that we (Africans) should celebrate our Africanism and tell more of our own authentic stories within the advertising space. The Brief was: Create an illustration or a print ad that’s essentially an anti-ad campaign concerning anything to do with the body. Be You… a message that needs to be reinforced on so many levels in our society.

In a speech that lasted almost 30 minutes, Judge Vonda Evans of Detroit laid into 47-year-old William Melendez, the former police officer caught on video beating an unarmed black man in January 2015. Looking at his history, Melendez deserved every word of it.
