Overcoming Fear
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but (He has given us a spirit) of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control” 2 Timothy 1:7.
In our world the spirit of fear torments the human race. Our spirit, soul (psyche) and body are easily sucked into fear’s vortex of agony, control, and defeat. But God the Father sent Jesus the Son into the world to pay for mankind’s sin, establishing the way for the Holy Spirit to enter and live within believers’ hearts.
We are told in scripture that our bodies are the “temple of the Holy Ghost”. Because of our Triune God we have the ability to appropriate power in our lives to overcome fear and its consequences. Furthermore, knowing God’s love personally will push fear out of our lives. “In Jesus”, we are each seen by God as His perfect rose flower, and it doesn’t matter that we still have some thorns! In other words, even as we mature spiritually and have fewer thorns, He will love us no differently from the way He does now. Through Jesus Christ we are seen as perfect, and we are loved perfectly!
Experientially being connected to God’s unconditional love gives us the power to let go of fear. Love is more powerful than evil and that includes fear! God has so much to give us that is positive, yet we must be willing to receive Him with a humble and open heart. The promise is this: “He has given us a spirit of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” HE longs for us to know Him personally, and believe He really loves us and that His powerful Spirit, united and working within our spirit, can overcome the fear that attempts to hold us in bondage.
