Fieldwork #4: Gestures and Observations
I have noticed a lot of gestures throughout my day on campus.
1. A handshake between two people is a very common way to introduce yourself to someone you’re just meeting. It can also just be a way of greeting someone you already know. This gesture is something that I see all throughout the day between the students and professors.
2. As I enter the lab room inside of the library, I look up, and almost every student is sitting at a computer in this position. Making this gesture is usually because of stress, confusion, or because they’re simply just tired. I often do the myself.
3. Hugging. This is a sweet gesture to show that you’re happy to see someone. Throughout the day, all you see is hugging because there’s so many people on campus, you may not see the same people every single day. A hug can also make someone feel better. If someone is down, crying, or hurt, a hug is a small gesture that can make a huge difference.
4. Another gesture I noticed today was a girl bobbing her head to some music she was listening to in her earphones. This is a gesture made when someone is loving a certain song and just enjoying the many different elements in that song.
5. The next gesture I notice on campus usually is made in the classroom; but, this is a gesture that is used outside of the classroom as well. In class, the teacher felt as if nobody was paying attention to him and he decided to call on a student; when he did, the student didn’t know the answer and shrugged her shoulders. This is a gesture made when you don’t know the answer to something.
6. A gesture I also see is the “happy dance”. When something exciting happens or when someone finds out some good news, they do a little happy dance to express their excitement.
