She wants to believe there are answers hidden somewhere in these ruins. Jacob may not be able to tell them what happened, what led to him being found among the trees without breath in his lungs. But there were always clues. Like the wounds that looked suspiciously like an animal bite on the boy’s arm. Like where his body had been deposited. Even the most mundane details of the crime that had committed might lead to an explanation. She didn’t want to hold on to hope that Jacob might be a clue to Addison, but for some reason she felt there was some kind of connection - if only because they’d both gone missing at nearly the same time.
“Yeah, uh…I mean, this doesn’t happen in small towns, right?” But it did, sometimes, sadly. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe this was just part of the normal, hellish world they lived in. She didn’t have those answers. “Did you know him? Jacob, I mean?” She gestured vaguely towards where he’d just come before a hand combed through her hair awkwardly. “Thanks for letting me deposit all my shit on you, Kenny.” She chuckled. “I’m Avery. Only been in town like…well, almost a month, maybe? Are you uh- local?”
“No, not usually.” It’s not quite true -- Blackrock does have a much higher mortality rate than most other small towns, after all, but it’s mostly just discarded as a statistical outlier as there’s no real identifiable reason for it. Just plain ol’ bad luck, is the general consensus. “I-- um, not really, no. He used to be really into dinosaurs a few months back, so I ordered in a few books for him -- uh, I work at the library -- but I haven’t really seen him since.”
He doesn’t think about the grubby, chocolate stained pages he’d pretended not to notice when the books were returned and how, even though plenty more kids will take those books out and spill something on them, it’ll never quite be the same as Jacob’s dirty fingerprints on the pristine white pages.
“Oh,” they laugh, grateful as she breaks them out of their thoughts, “really, it’s okay, no need to thank me. It’s lovely to meet you, Avery. Yeah, I was born and raised here. I do hope you’ve been enjoying your stay here, despite, well...everything. Are you in town long?”
