You know during the tiebreaker race, towards the end when Lightning gets his lap back, the camera pans to the Dinoco suite and Tex goes "Look at that boy go out there!" as Lightning gets second place away from Chick.
Maybe I've entered an alternate dimension or something, I always assumed Tex is cheering Strip on, since he's still leading - but. Part of me suddenly thinks he's actually rooting for Lightning at that point.
Tex is looking for a new racer. He's had his eyes on Lightning the whole season. For him to make up an entire lap on his own without a caution or anything to help in so few laps as he did? I think Tex is actually complimenting Lightning here and not Strip.
Bonus headcanon - because when Tex makes that remark, you can see Lynda smiling and nodding in agreement. We also see Strip smile when Lighting finally gets the lead. I think all three of them want him to win.
Bonus bonus headcanon - we never ever see Strip try to hold off Lighting (granted, there's not really a ton of opportunities to do so). He only ever actively blocks Chick. Not saying he was willing to give the lead up to Lightning without a fight - but he miiiiiight not have raced him as hard if it had came down to the two of them.
You know what I wanna see? I wanna see Red in action. I want to see this shy, timid character suddenly become overwhelmingly brave and save the day. Like, imagine there’s a burning building, and everyone’s driving away as quickly as possible, but here he comes, diving straight into it, saving people and dousing the flames, caring so much about others that he completely forgets about himself and his weaknesses. We only get the briefest glimpse of this in Cars 1 where he stops the tractors from running over his flowers. If he’s that protective of flowers, imagine what he can do when friends of his are in danger.

So I saw some comments suggesting making Castiel as his 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V, so I went ahead with it, and then I was like “why not add it into the poster” and then I said, “why not make some Deanpala fanart to go with it” and then it just got carried away and adding a logo, and uh here it is. Midway through drawing this, my partner caught me. I didn't realize he'd come up behind me until he said "that's cute" and my face turned hot and i yelled "DO NOT PERCIEVE ME!"

How do you suppose the first race of the 2006 Piston Cup season went down? Did The King announce his retirement plans ahead of the season? What other storylines were the commentators/analysts parsing out? What did anyone know about Lightning at that point (yes, totally actually just asking about Harv here). What happened during the race? What were the standings by the end of the day?

The red light turns green aswords stream across the teleprompter in the background. The words themselves serveas a signal for action, but nothing more. They’d not been adhered to in years.
“Welcome back, race fans, we’recoming to you live from Florida International Speedway, here to kick off the startof the Piston Cup racing season! I’m Bob Cutlass, joined with – wait, Darrell?Has anyone seen Darrell?”
The smoothly oiled machine thatis RSN broadcasting cut directly from Bob in the studio to a mob of eager racefans gathered near the garages. Perfectly on cue, the camera streams convene ona split screen and the fans watching at home are graced with a side-by-sideview of the booth and America’s favorite race reporter. Seamless. Expected. Noone bothers to give it second thought.
“Kori?” Bob asks. “Any sight ofDarrell? We seem to have… misplaced him.”
The small teal sedan flashes aquick smile and turns to the crowd behind her.
“Has anyone seen Cartrip?Darrell? Where is he?”
The mob moves as one and gesturesoff-screen to Kori’s right, cheering and whistling. A few cars move to the sideas the glittering, flame emblazoned, retired racer emerges from among themwearing sunglasses that are shaped like the speedway and drinking someundisclosed fluid out of an opaque container.
“Darrell!” Kori exclaims withas much false surprise as she can muster. “Where’ve you been?”
“I been right here this wholetime! Hangin’ out with the fans!” he responds with Tennessean gusto. “Y’allain’t losing me this time. There’s no Celine Scion concert around this weekend– “
“What – what are you wearing.”

I’m not sure if this has been done already but could you maybe write a little something fic/headcanon about how strip weathers first got into racing? And maybe even his first thoughts when lightning shows up at his first race as a rookie and absolutely stuns everyone including sort of him?? Thanks so much in advance 💛💛
Your wish for headcanons is my command.
Huge racing history nerd, ever since he rolled off the line at the manufacturer. Something about a Hudson Hornet? Several news stories, TV broadcasts, and compulsive traffic violations later, he knew he had to dig a little deeper.
He started out on the short tracks, like everyone else. He was good, maybe a little too good - he had a tendency to dominate most races but then lose them at the end because he'd get too worked up about finishing out a race, and would screw up somehow. He won occasionally, of course, but it was obvious he needed some help.
The right people were watching at the right time. Dinoco was looking to get into the racing industry as a sponsor, but didn't want someone with a ton of experience. Like their business, they wanted to build their race team from the ground up. So they found a promising grassroots racer and started from the bottom.
It didn't take long to reach the top.
Pretty soon, Strip had to learn to be a little less obsessive about his job. He'd deprive himself of sleep and other necessary day-to-day things in order to spend as much time focusing on how to be a better racer. Technique, speed, downforce vs. drag - he was obsessed with piecing it all together into one perfect picture. Well, spoiler alert, there is no perfect combination - it's all about performing with what you've been given. And for starters, making sure you're physically and mentally prepared for a race is a good first step.
Seven Piston Cups and hundreds of races later, Lightning shows up. And this kid is good. Too good for his own benefit. There's a sense of deja vu when Lighting wins his first race at Glen Ellen and then bombs out of the next two after doing consistently well during the first 2/3rds of the race. This kid has infinite amounts of potential, but he's gonna need a little help.
So I guess I never really realized it, but when the Piston Peak Air Attack team are showing Dusty that episode of CHoPs and they all shout "Hoist!" at the same time-

some of the quick facts:
- average speed of 103mph (165kmh) including the 22.5 minutes of refueling - reached cruise speeds of 160mph (258kmh) - 700 horsepower from various upgrades - built-in Net Radar radar detector - windshield-mount Escort Max 360 radar detector - AL Priority laser jammer system - aircraft collision avoidance system (for finding highway patrol aircraft) - brake lights and tail lights disabled - vinyl trim used to make the rear lights resemble a honda accord (and not a race-ready mercedes) - 2 ipads for additional police tracking - 2 GPS systems to prove their record - police scanner - CB radio - 18 spotters along the route to watch for police - and my personal favourite, a roof mounted set of thermal binoculars

I bothered to look up the source all the way back and some extra facts:
Apparently, they had cops helping keep the other cops away, they did this by convincing them that they would do it regardless and helping would be safer, and if they set a crazy enough record it would deter other people.
The speed discrepancy between the top speed at almost 200 and average speed of 103 is because they dropped it with other cars nearby, which was also a strategy to not get reported and stopped.
It was not a Mercedes it was an Infiniti Q50 modded with a GT-R drivetrain which was set up for multiple drivers with a MIDDLE seat like a McClaren F1? I cannot find pictures unfortunately.
The original interview says they had a fucking smoke screen if they got chased even. Recommended by his therapist apparently?
I think my favorite part was he is agnostic so he prayed to every god just in case. All of them he could find. Just to cover all the bases.
