Summary: Francis returns to his cabin from seeing off David Young on his transport to Erebus to find that his chess set has been disturbed.
It’s barely anything. Two pawns and a knight on either side of the board have been touched, and the white king and queen moved forward one row. There isn’t any semblance of strategy to the way the board has been set up: more white pieces than black have been moved, for a start. It does not seem like the intention was for any serious game to play out. Rather, it seems as though whoever touched the board was merely looking to amuse himself to pass the time.
Of course, Francis knows exactly who it was that rearranged the chess set. He knows it was Fitzjames, because he watched him do it.
Or: five times Francis is distracted by James’s hands without him noticing, and one time James makes excellent use of that distraction.

Jane’s order isn’t complicated. But she will ask the person at the counter what milk options there are, what sweeteners are available and if the muffins contain nuts or gluten. Then she’ll order a plain latte, no sugar and split an apple walnut muffin with her friend (extra plate please)
Jane Franklin would have a French press at home for any fancy coffees she might feel like having. She would be the type to suggest having coffee at her place instead of at a coffee shop because she has her fancy French press. I cannot see this woman going anywhere else for her coffee.
Sophia, on the other hand, would be answering emails or doing her finances at the café/coffee shop for at least an hour and would be willing to try new flavours if they're available. Sure, she'll be perfectly nice to the barista and she doesn't have an annoying coffee order by any means, but at least she has a coffee order.

since this is somewhat of a longer post, i'll put it below the cut<3
the last book I read: In Memoriam by Alice Winn. it was a very solid read about the impact of war on the psyche with some good queer elements. not the most innovative or impressive book i've ever read, but i was invested in the story!
a book I'd recommend: okay so i could list so many here, i have a separate shelf of my favourite books in my cabinet, but if i had to pick one, it would be Kolja by Arthur Japin. as a disclaimer, i read this book in its original language (since, hi, i’m dutch) so i have no idea of the translation is any good, but this book single-handedly ignited my love for tchaikovsky. the eventual reveal hit so very hard.
a book I couldn't put down: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. that thing got me out of the biggest reading slump of my life (one that lasted several years, in fact) and single-handedly reignited my love for reading. excellent prose, excellent characters, great banter, interesting world, what more do you need?
a book I've read twice or more: i really am about to be That Girl but i do a yearly reread of the Captive Prince trilogy by C.S. Pacat. the prose, the characters, the development… it’s very much not for everyone and please check the trigger warnings beforehand because there are A LOT of them, but i keep coming back to it.
a book on my tbr: my tbr is embarrassingly long. i have a lot of physical books i haven’t read yet… The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab (the sequel to the Shades of Magic series and the first book in the Threads of Power series) has been on my shelf for a while, though. i did read the entirety of Shades of Magic and loved it, so i do intend to get to this one eventually.
a book I've put down: The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams. i’m sorry to everyone who enjoyed this book but girl what was that<3 these were people in their twenties acting like literal children<3 i love a romance, don’t get me wrong, but these people should not have been allowed to come near another human being, let alone a romantic partner.
there are also quite a few books i really should have put down but for some reason insisted on hate-reading instead (including League of Liars by Astrid Scholte, Here’s To Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera, and In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens; i actually hated the latter so much that it put me off the author forever). if anyone happens to have enjoyed any of these books, i am so happy for you! wish that’d been me, honestly.
a book on my wishlist: anything by T. Kingfisher. i discovered her books a little over a year ago (Nettle and Bone is so peculiar and so good!!) and would honestly happily read whatever she puts out. if i had to be specific, maybe her Astarion that’s coming out next year?
a favourite book from childhood: To Nowhere and Back by Margaret J. Anderson! i borrowed this book from the library so many times… this was my comfort read throughout the entirety of primary school. would actually love to reread it as an adult if only for nostalgic reasons!
a book I'd give to a friend: oh this entirely depends on the person. i will mention a book i have given to a friend, which is The Secret Life of Albert Entwhistle by Matt Cain, which had me sobbing on several occasions. it doesn't have the most sophisticated plot, but i loved albert as a character and his budding relationships with the people around him.
a book of poetry or lyrics that I own: i don’t read as much poetry, but i have a few poetry books, including a collection of great war poetry (your Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon etc), some collected poems by Alan Ginsberg, and a collection of Sappho poems.
a non-fiction book that I own: had you asked me this a few years ago, i would have said Beloved and God: the Story of Hadrian and Antinous by Royston Lambert. right now, of course, i'm very deep into anything to do with the franklin expedition, so i own all of the most well-known sources on it, including May We Be Spared To Meet On Earth, Battersby’s James Fitzjames biography, Icebound in the Arctic by Michael Smith (the Crozier biography), and several others
what I'm currently reading: Frozen in Time by Owen Beattie and John Geiger, as i have been for an embarrassing amount of time because i keep getting distracted by writing fanfiction and watching silly improv plays on youtube :’) one day i will finish this book…
what I'm planning on reading next: Master And Commander has been sitting on my shelf for a couple of weeks after @chesthighwater and i watched the movie, so i might go for that!
