Today, I bought a pomegranate. I walked to the market and I looked for the brightest, most noticeably red one. When you go to a market, you want to get the nicest fruit because you do not wish to waste your money, earned at a hard days work, on something you will not enjoy.

When I purchased it, the wax coating shone bright under the ceiling lights and I was certain. When I arrived home, excited to open and eat said pomegranate, I noticed a smell I did not before.

It smelled strange, not fresh—but it’s no longer pomegranate season anymore, so I assumed it was just worn. Weathered down. Not inedible, but maybe not as perfect as I’d hoped.

Cutting it open, revealing what laid inside it, the smell intensified and there was no doubt it was rotten. I stared at it poignantly because in all honestly, I was disappointed with what I saw.

The brown, rotted flesh with murky seeds that ooze expired juice. Yet, the skin still shone and it was still beautifully red. Nothing had changed except you’d taken the time to open it up and simply became disappointed with the results.

It wasn’t like there was no doubt this could happen. There’s no way of knowing. You only choose what you see on the outside and hope the inside is to your standards. If not, you either push through, chew through raw and rotten flesh, or simply throw it away.

Waste of money, time, but there was no outside force making you invest into this pomegranate. You chose it. You bought it. You took it home. You did this, and because your ideals were subverted, you are disappointed.

It’s the same pomegranate. Only now, the rotten insides is on full display and now you have been let down by something that has unchanged.

But we both threw it away in the end. Because nobody wants a rotten old pomegranate. People aren’t so different, after all.

I absolutely adore The Ballad of a Bygone Blight and have gone back to reread certain parts of chapters multiple times because the writing is so well done oh my god.

Do you think aside from what’s already mentioned there’s more differences between Spidey and DC!Reader?

Like what if Spidey has a lot quieter footsteps because it became second nature after so many stealth missions or they’re better at making their presence unknown?

What if their reflexes are much quicker and they react to things that they wouldn’t have been able to in the past? What if they’re able to pick up on subtle cues or work with strangers better than they used to? What if they’re more naturally charismatic and accidentally get into Gotham’s spotlight?

Looking from the outside in their situation really does feel like a ship of Theseus in the best way possible.

absolutely! I don’t make it a point to show EVERY difference between spidey and dc!reader, but there are MANY. like, down to the core, they are completely different people. id say it’s a main point going forward that it’s actually incredibly OBVIOUS that they’re not the same person, but the fam was simply so unaware of what dc!reader was really like, that they hadn’t realised it. how awful is that?

exactly, things like like! it’s not super obvious glaring differences that one would pick up on right away, but it’s the littler things. like spidey’s a little more built on their upper arms, and their hair is a little longer. they have freckles dotting their back and scars from their various escapades.

of course, it’s not just physical. actions like you mentioned make it even more obvious! other than their personality in general (which is probably the most brought-up part of it all lol), smaller details like they’re more alert, less likely to snap, less forgiving to their elder siblings, scared around their father, more open to their friends, etc?

the way you walk, the way in which you talk to people, your personality, your way of viewing life—it’s all fundamentally different. that’s why it hurts so much when your “family” barely notices you’ve changed, if at all :P

they water it down to the bullet, but what kind of bullet can do something like this?
