           Avery’s gaze flickered over the other as they walked into the room, cocking a manicured eyebrow at the question. “I worked in a stripclub for four years, it takes a lot more than someone sitting quietly drinking tea to bother me.” He stated simply. “However you do look terrible, but I guess most people would after what happened.” 

                   kenzo smiles wearily to the escort. “ i know there was nothing we could’ve done about it, but i still feel like we  should’ve done something. ” she gives a heavy sigh. “ now, there’s a family to contact and a body to bury and i have a roommate who has bandages that need to be checked every six hours. ”

     he’s up early (by his own standards at least) and that means he definitely needed a liquid wake up in the form of some frilly triple shot espresso drink. he drops by hq on his way back to the penthouse, reasoning he should at least get up to date as to whether or not there was going to be some followup. he’s itching for action and although he’s just a dealer, his pride complex has him thirsting for blood. 

    he’s stalking past when he hears kenzo speak and her voice draws him to a stop. blinking at her in confusion with a frown creasing his brow, he shakes his head. “how can you bother someone when you’re just sitting there? the fuck? ”

                 she blinks. then, she blinks again. it takes her a moment to process that she’s talking to jagger. “ sorry, ” she mumbles. kenzo’s not really in the right state of mind to really mean anything she says. her hands unfurl around the cup to try to rub away the black spots in her vision, “ m’tired. good morning. ” with a sigh, she reverts back to her original pose and finds herself observing him for a moment. “ what brings you here so early ?? ”

             her lips form into an ‘ o ’ shape, poised to call out, ‘ OPPA. ’ old habits die hard but she’s not quite in the mood to tease him. “ m’okay, ” she mumbles. “ didn’t get much sleep. ” half-heartedly, she gestures to the coffee maker. “ made it about half an hour ago. dunno if it’s cold yet. ”

            kenzo sits rigid in her chair as she nurses the steaming cup of genmaicha. the events of the night before had left her exhausted and all she really wanted was to go to sleep. but, despite her heavy lids, kenzo doesn’t believe she deserves the privilege. she should be doing something productive. do inventory. clean weapons. check on corv. she’s pulled from her thoughts at the creak of the floorboards. 

           “ oh, ” she blinks, snapping out of her daze, “ did i bother you ?? ”

When he first started, if something like this had gone down, James would have been out as fast as he could maybe it wasn’t the best thing to admit, but he would have, he had joined just for the thrill but this had been too much. But now the gang was important to him and he was going to stick around, that didn’t mean he wasn’t shaken though he was trying to hide it as best as he could, “Do you know you Corvina is doing?” He asked the first person he saw, trying to sound casual.

                  while she should be at home to keep on eye on corvina, kenzo realized she had left a couple of things at hq. she had slipped out while her roommate was still sleeping, and planned to return before she woke. she didn’t really want to chat with anyone, but james’ concern meant well, she supposed. “ resting. at home. ” kenzo answers curtly. then, a beat later, her eyes narrow, “ why ?? did you want to visit or something ?? ”

               “  hey, prison food ain’t that bad– not when you’re jewish.  ”  another lie they both know– but the lies never stop leaving adrian’s mouth. he was a survivor which meant doing whatever he could to keep his head afloat. grabbing one of the scorching cookies from the tray, he happily tosses a piece into his mouth. breaking a bit off for her, he leaves it at the entrance of her lips.  “  go on, it’s good as fuck.  ”

               a laugh escapes her lips at the joke. as he holds the cookies to her lips, kenzo takes a step back. it’s the first time she’s ever pulled away from him but, it’s only because actually doesn’t like cinnamon. “ if you insist, ” she says weakly before accepting the cookie. her soft lips brush lightly against his fingers. “ mhm, ” she sighs, “ it actually is good. ”

      “pancakes sound better than the recipe itself, honestly. it was just really fancy, and you’re a baking talent, so i thought…” she trailed off and waved a hand, still lost in the taste of the cookie kenzo’d given her. “right! i can’t wait for normalcy.” it was entirely true. even though she was always a bit nervous around adrian, the 212 was a surreal experience with him gone. it was surreal with him home, too, but a surreality that she liked much better.

        “ i’ll tell you what, ” she starts, leaning on the counter, “ i’ll go out and do some shopping tonight. text me the list, and we can make tomorrow another baking day. as long as nothing pops up -- you know how adrian is with his last minute, mysterious texts from unknown numbers -- we’ll have pancakes tomorrow. you can make hot chocolate, it’ll be great. ”

“Adrian not liking something you cooked? Ridiculous. He’ll love them querido no worries.” He watches as she sets the cookies down, heat coming off of the pan. “Gracias amiga,” Santiago nods, grateful that he doesn’t actually have to eat any. “I would have for you, just so were clear.” He offers the slightest of soft smile back to match Kenzo’s proud one. Then she speaks again and he beams just a bit more, nodding. “You know I’ll never say no to that, your cooking? Oh it’s excelente!” Santiago couldn’t cook to save his life himself, he supposed that’s why he was always opting to go out to eat. It’s not like he ever had time to cook anyway usually.

                 a light blush grows on her face at his words. perhaps there was a grain of truth behind all the people who had poked fun at her decision to bake for adrian, but kenzo would hardly admit that. “ thank you, santi-baby.  you know i love you. ” she tosses a few more miscellaneous things into the sink, wiping things down as she goes. “i just went grocery shopping. what’re you feeling, santi ?? other than, y’know, spice. ”

“Thank you” She said smiling widely at Kenzo, when she first came to the US, Eloise hadn’t wanted to care for people again, but well some people in the 212 like Kenzo had made it very difficult.”And you’re very right…Some magazine posted an article on how you shouldn’t est cookies with milk and you can imagine how people reacted.”

            kenzo snorts loudly at that. “ milk and cookies are an american staple. that’s the first thing i learned at school. ” she could remember how many nights she had spent as a young girl, sneaking into the common room after dark and talking with the girls all while nursing a box of chewy cookies and cartons of 2%. “ blasphemy, ” she says with a shake of her head, “ blasphemy. ”

      he stares, shock plain on his face. it’s not only that she left the gun in the fridge. it’s also that she admits it so readily. he shrugs it off and steps aside so that she can retrieve it from the fridge. she’s the sort of person to know where he can get something to eat. “do you know of any food in this place?”

        “ it happens sometimes, ” she clarifies with a shrug. kenzo, despite her capable mind, could be forgetful. while she had been making pancakes that morning, the pistol kept hitting the counter and she might’ve placed it near the butter container and it might’ve ended up in the fridge during clean-up. mistakes happened. “ what kind of food ?? ” she asks, brows furrowing. declan had been in the gang for a year and he still didn’t know ?? “ cereal is in the top left cupboard and there’s peanut butter on the bottom shelf. ”
