               he nods jerkily because of course, of course lia believes him when he said he almost died via hot chocolate because mateo has never given her reason to think of otherwise situations. ❝sure but, if we are talking about look wise then maguire did not look like a teen. granted garfield also wasn’t a teen but he was a bit more passable. i will admit, the bad guys in maguire’s movie were better.❞

         “ WHAT ? ” is the first word out of her mouth. she’s not really asking – it’s only that every single thing rosie’s said is laced with drama, and lia needs a minute to catch up. it doesn’t seem right, focusing on the lost-cause rookie when corvina– when lia doesn’t know what corvina’s status is. she is speechless, staring at the tea, simultaneously wondering who died and wishing she’d never have to find out. “i’m–” but she bites back the word ‘sorry.’ it just seems profoundly useless. “is there anything i can do? to help?” she’s pretty damn sure the answer will be no.

               there’s something about the way lia is abnormally withdrawn ( not that she’s particularly talkative around him ) that intrigues him. surely he hadn’t done something wrong– had he forgotten her birthday, maybe ?  “  s’alright, i know i’m not your favorite.  ”  he tries to offer her a smile to cushion the reality of his words. going through the fridge, he fishes out two beers– out of courtesy but he’ll gladly drink her’s for her.  “  you want one ? you deserve it, living in this shithole here.  ”

      with each word he utters, the guilt builds, until she’s staring at him with a faintly horrified expression. “you’re my favorite! i mean, um, you’re not not my favorite. you’re good.” she accepts the beer, cracks it open, and sips it gingerly. “and beer is good. thanks.” beer is good in small doses, anyway. but she’ll just drink it very slowly. “here’s to you being back.”

                  she smiles encouraging at lia, more than happy to feed the girl. there were some gang members that kenzo truly did not fuck with, but she adored lia. kenzo hums, thinking, “ maple syrup, huh ?? ” finally, kenzo gives a shrug, “ bring me the recipe. if we’re buying maple syrup, we might as well just make pancakes. ” lia’s solemnity brings a grin to kenzo’s face, “ thankfully, yeah. you’re right. soon, he’ll be back and everything will turn normal again. ”

      “pancakes sound better than the recipe itself, honestly. it was just really fancy, and you’re a baking talent, so i thought...” she trailed off and waved a hand, still lost in the taste of the cookie kenzo’d given her. “right! i can’t wait for normalcy.” it was entirely true. even though she was always a bit nervous around adrian, the 212 was a surreal experience with him gone. it was surreal with him home, too, but a surreality that she liked much better.

         delilah can’t help the g i g g l e that falls from her lips, a SMILE residing on her face as the other girl practically sprints over to her jacket. there’s a nod of her head, notecards s h o v e d to the side as she follows the other girls lead, a sweatshirt pulled hastily over her head as she smiles. “ starbucks sounds g r e a t. and they definitely do !! they’re all buttery and delicious and warm — have you ever had an almond croissant ? i SWEAR they’re the best thing on earth. ”

      “i have heard of an almond croissant, but i haven’t ever had one.” she shrugs the crime off; she’ll try one today, and bid the item on her bucket-list farewell. “do they have them at starbucks? i thought all they had were...” she lists off her favorites in her head. paninis and the little vanilla bean scones. “cookies and things. and plain croissants.” she zips her coat up and then grabs a scarf – her favorite, in fact – to further protect her against the chill. “so what do you want to do when you’re done studying?”

          he nods, coughing to clear his throat from whatever that was. he knows rationally it isn’t as weird as it should be because friends call each other pretty right? right, it’s not like he told her he loves her. ❝yeah, yeah. i’m fine just you know, hot chocolate down the wrong pipe❞ mateo mutters, his mind going over the topic at hand before shaking his head.❝wait no, i’m not alright. the amazing spider-man 2 doesn’t exist so if we are being honest, garfield is the best. this new kid, he’s okay too.❞

      she winces sympathetically. “yikes. don’t worry though, i just burnt my tongue on it. we’re both terrible at drinking.” she frowned at the screen, still displaying netflix in all its glory. “but maguire had two good movies before the… incident. i think he should get points for that.”

               he looks up as libra makes an entrance. he’d expected a lot more than some kind of forced greeting and lack of eye contact. but he wasn’t going to force anything. hell, he figured he’d at least get some kind of welcome back party, but alas.  “  doesn’t sound like it,  ”  he lets it slip, mostly as an attempt to tease her but also wanting to know what she had against him ?? what could he have FUCKED up with only being there for two seconds ?  “  nah, stay. i’ll get a rookie to clean it up. –what’s been happening ?  ”  he says, taking more steps closer to her so that he could get that eye contact he’s been waiting for.

      she winces. “sorry. i didn't mean it like that.” quite suddenly, he’s closer to her than he was moments ago, and not only that, but asking her questions – questions that she’s not entirely sure how to answer. maybe she’d have better command of her brain if it weren’t him she was speaking to. she takes a deep breath, counts to ten slowly, and then manages a nod. “okay, i’ll stay.” she almost says kenzo made cookies, but then maybe that’s supposed to be a surprise. other than that, as far as she knows, everyone’s been doing the same old thing. “it’s almost business as usual. i mean, we all missed you, though. of course we did.”

          ❝well, he isn’t the best.❞ he sucks on the top row of his teeth, pretending to think it over. as if it was actually a discussion. ❝but it’s spiderman, so i wouldn’t mind too much. it’s a good thing you’re cute though.❞ he freezes so abruptly, he somehow manages to also almost choke on his own spit. 

      “i think he’s the best peter parker, but garfield is better at being both spider-man and peter parker, if we’re not counting the train wreck that was the amazing spider-man 2, because you know only electro was redeemable in that one.” she snorts. “you okay? and aw, thank you. you’re not so bad yourself.”

she finds herself grinning at the other girl, “ maybe i can spare a few. ” then, kenzo makes quick work with the oven mitts and begins to scrap the snickerdoodles off of the tray. as she plates them, she gives a shake of her head. “ you know vegans are the bane of my existence, lia. ” this was because kenzo hated working within confines like vegan butter and almond milk. “ but… bring me the recipe, maybe we can whip something up. ” as she pushes the plate of cookies to lia, the smile on her face widens. “ it’s hard not to miss him, y’know ?? ”

      “are you sure? thank you!” it’s with a smile that she looks at the cookies now. “i can see why. the recipe was so complicated. plus the amount of maple syrup it required was crazy – it said it was a replacement for honey, but that stuff is so expensive.” not that honey couldn’t be pricey too. lia wasn’t sure which cost more. “maybe i will, and we can just... fix it somehow.” she takes a cookie and bites into it, smile immediately widening at the taste. “you’ve outdone yourself. these are so good.” then, more solemnly: “yeah, it is. but we don’t have to miss him anymore.”
