7. We believe in fairytale endings. What was our favorite thing to watch growing up? Most people our age will say Disney. We grew up on Disney movies and learned all about love through the stories they told — or at least I did.

The problem is such movies are incredibly inaccurate and often end up doing more harm than good. They create impossible expectations — expectations that always leave us disappointed in the end, not to mention confused.

This is what I've been saying for years! I'm so sick of romance movies. Even though I know rationally that they are bullshit, my heart is still disappointed when things don’t work out. I feel like I’d be better off if I was never exposed to those unrealistic expectations to begin with.

The rest of this article, though, kind of falls in the romantic category (e.g. a partner being the most important piece of the life puzzle) so maybe it's ironic to count this one piece as truth?

Growing Pains

I once read a quote saying how as we grow up, we realize that our parents are only human. This is very true. When you get older and realize that your once-perfect parents are deeply flawed individuals, just like everyone else, it can be painful. Especially when those same flawed individuals fail to accept that their once-angelic children have grown into flawed individuals themselves. All anyone can do is try, and continue accepting family for who they are because at the end of the day, we're all each other's got.

A little late on the commentary but I was just thinking about Thursday's Scandal episode some more...

Remember the scene where Olivia tells Fitz that she went away with Jake Ballard the two months she disappeared, then Fitz immediately distances himself from her? It's a little more nuanced in this case but basically, he won't claim her but then gets mad when she finds someone else who will. I hate to generalize too much but boy, have I heard that one before! What is it with men and their ridiculous egos? Haven't they heard "you can't have your cake and eat it too" ...or does that only apply to women?

It was good to see Nicki Minaj at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. Of course she was riding shotgun on Bang Bang https www.youtube.com watch v 40wj_87xsIU even though the video...

This article talks about how it's sad that white folks are taking over hiphop and now raps don't seem valid in the mainstream unless a white person's on them. It talks about how it was unexpected and possible reasons but the author left out one thing: When rappers stopped rapping about the struggle and started only rapping about money, cars, and hoes, they made it easy for white people to swoop in and take over. White people have had money, cars, and hoes since money, cars, and hoes existed! They can certainly rap about that, weak flow or not.

I'm definitely sad about this but certainly not surprised. It's just like what happened with rock (as this author mentioned) and whites trying to claim #teamnatural. They just can't let us have our own space.

A silent protest in Love Park, downtown Philadelphia orchestrated by performance artists protesting the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The onslaught of passerby’s wanting to take photos with the statue exemplifies the disconnect in American society. Simply frame out the dead body, and it doesn’t exist.

Here are some observations by one of the artists involved in the event:

I don’t know who any of these folks are.

They were tourists I presume.

But I heard most of what everything they said. A few lines in particular stood out. There’s one guy not featured in the photos. His friends were trying to get him to join the picture but he couldn’t take his eyes off the body.

"Something about this doesn’t feel right. I’m going to sit this one out, guys." "Com’on man… he’s already dead."

(Laughs.)

There were a billion little quips I heard today. Some broke my heart. Some restored my faith in humanity. There was an older white couple who wanted to take a picture under the statue.

The older gentleman: “Why do they have to always have to shove their politics down our throats.” Older woman: “They’re black kids, honey. They don’t have anything better to do.”

One woman even stepped over the body to get her picture. But as luck would have it the wind blew the caution tape and it got tangle around her foot. She had to stop and take the tape off. She still took her photo.

There was a guy who yelled at us… “We need more dead like them. Yay for the white man!”

"One young guy just cried and then gave me a hug and said ‘thank you. It’s nice to know SOMEBODY sees me.’

This is outrageous. If I was standing there with that sign, I'd probably end up fighting somebody. Props to the people who did this, for their incredible patience and resilience.

So the part that got me most about this article was this, as it basically sums up my current view of myself:

Today, I am almost militantly pro-Black and Afro-centric. Still, I would be lying if I said I am not vulnerable to the ego-boost that comes from having a White man think I’m attractive. It is validating and affirming to know that someone from the most dominant and privileged demographic in our society finds me beautiful. It is one of the ongoing aspects of racism that we fail to discuss and one of the hardest parts of anti-racism and healing work to continuously confront.

I've been thinking a lot about the whole black-white interracial relationship thing and how it really bothers me when a black man decides that his own race isn't good enough and only goes for white women. But also about the fact that my sister's boyfriend is white but white guys have never seemed to like me...or at least have never admitted to it. What makes her so different from me that she has dated a few and I've seen signs of crushes but nothing more? Is it her seeming distaste for black slang, most hiphop, and twerking? Well at least recently (from hiphop concerts and the ridiculousness that is Miley Cyrus, among other things) it's become obvious to me that many white people are very interested in those things. But maybe not up close and personal? Who knows.

All I know is I gave up my childhood white boo fantasies and went for who I know and who appreciate me: black men. And as I became more and more "militant" at the end of college, those fantasies faded all the way into the past. But I definitely can't say the thought does not come up... Especially the whole mixed babies thing because (let's face it) mixed people are usually gorgeous.

I really appreciate the fact that this article brings up a topic that I rarely ever hear people talk about except in an angry, unproductive manner. And I appreciate that it made me stop to think more about where those nagging thoughts of "the swirl" may come from. Who knows, maybe I can spark up a more productive conversation about it next time something like this comes up!

I've tried to start a Haiti-specific blog but life has been overwhelming and I haven't kept up with it either, though better than I have with this one...so far. End of Summer

Today is the first day of August. It's crazy how the summer seems to just fly by while the winter slowly drags its feet and plods along until you can't take it anymore! While I'm welcoming the week of (hopefully) rest and relaxation that I'll have after my summer jobs are over, I'm also sad that it'll be the end of lots of good times mentoring students. It'll also officially be the end of childhood for me since I just graduated! So far, I just feel like I'm on a regular summer break but I bet once the summer ends, I'll really feel the change. I'm not sure if I'm ready for all the responsibility and debt-paying that comes along with that! If I could have one extra month of summer, I think I'd be ready to go. For now, I'll just have to enjoy the time that I do have left in my favorite season of the year.
