There’s a thought I’ve been rotating in my mind recently since checking official posts confirming that Vince is gay and Rody is bisexual and has internalized biphobia.

In the sense that Rody never ate the food that Vince gave him. Didn’t ever consider that Vince would genuinely see him as someone worthy of working there. He literally asks Vince if he’s going to fire him. Even when we can see Vince having scratched out the newspaper clipping talking about Rody being a bad waiter. It’s in the fact that Vince’s favorite food is lemon and the perfume that gives you more time to serve customers is lemon scented.

Every act Rody does, every nightmare he has. I think it’s all a way to discuss Rody’s shying away from the part of himself that loves men. It’s seeing the only other antagonist that is presented to us (the ex classmate) as being another man. Someone that sends Rody spiraling with his presence.

He refuses to eat Vince’s food because he refuses to accept that he likes men. He hangs so tightly onto his ex girlfriend because she’s a woman, he’s supposed to love her. He’s supposed to only love women.

And every act Vince does leaves Rody deeper and deeper in spiraling self hatred. He kills Vince. He burns down the bistro. He has once again destroyed any evidence of his love for men. But this time, he is left with a permanent reminder by having lost his ear. Cannibalism is a sin, just as homosexuality is. Just as murder is.
