It’s important to investigate the nature of anger because it is such a powerful energy and can be so destructive. When we can face our anger without being afraid of it, or angry about it, or defenseless in the face of it, then we can come close to it. When we are able to look closely at anger, we see the threads of different feelings - the sadness and the fear woven throughout it - and we can see its true nature. When we can uncover the helplessness and powerlessness that often feed anger, we transform them. In being mindful of these feelings, we actually use the sheer energy of anger - without getting lost in it or overcome by its tremendously deluding and fixating quality - to reveal instead the courage and compassion that have been concealed.

Stay. Good human. Difficult feelings—the kind that make us feel squeamish and terrible—are unappreciated teachers. If we were to stop running away, stop distracting ourselves, stop trying to make the bad feelings go away, and finally *stay* with them, we would benefit from the wisdom they have to share. Even the simple act of staying with difficult feelings itself changes things. The power of those feelings to overwhelm and confuse us diminishes when you are willing to stay with them. Often it is the running away that leads to confusion and unhealthy choices and even hurting others. When you stay, you are honest with yourself. You are willing to see what is there and meet it. While there are many different ways in which to work with such feelings, it begins with the act of staying.
