Childhood best friend!Ushijima
Context: Random thoughts on Ushijima as your childhood best friend. Friends to lovers
Ushijima who has liked you since kindergarten. His dad thought it was only a puppy crush and didnât pay too much mind to it since he thought it would eventually go away once he grew up (It didnât). Ushijima father was shocked when he saw his son holding hands with someoneâs daughter at the playground. She was eating a lollipop, staring at it like it was the most interesting thing in the world while his son stared with bright big eyes, slightly red cheeks and biggest smile in the world.
Ushijima who saw you were the prettiest girl in the world and has developed a crush on you since kindergarten. He drowned himself in fairytales, daydreamed and drew his thoughts, that being him as the prince and you as the princess that needed recusing. He drew it after much consideration and decided to give to you it as a birthday gift.
Ushijima who got you a lollipop and drawing as a gift, he intended them as offerings to confess, but standing face to face with you got him all shy and words died up in his mouth .
Ushijima who finally gather up all his courage to confess but you couldn't understand. Despite his words being straightforward âI like you!â, you couldnât comprehend his words or actions, but you knew candy, and it is delicious so you took his offerings anyways âYummy, thanksâ.
Ushijima who didnât think much and thought you and him were together officially since you accepted his gift offering.
Ushijimaâs dad was shocked to see he brought a friend home, a little girl from daycare home to play in the front yard. His dadâs mouth hung open in disbelief. He couldnât quite put his shock into words.. âKids these days they grow up too fast. Or am I living too slow?â Or âI raised a gentlemanâ after seeing how much he cared for you.
(His dad also started to welcome you home more often, inviting you to dinner and coming over to hang out with his son.)
You who weren't good at remembering things, so you could remember much in pre school. Your memories start as soon as elementary. All you knew was there was this boy who spawned in your life and has never left since kindergarten. But he was nice and caring so you didnât mind his presence. You also found out he just yaps a lot around you specifically, and finds it endearing. He talks a lot but it isnât annoying, instead you found his bluntness funny at times.
Ushijima who would always walk you home, and would even dare to be late to practices to walk you home (or at least to the bus station if you insist that you could go home by yourself).
He would walk you home then run back to school or sometimes ask you to stay during volleyball practices. You didnât mind staying behind to wait for him. You often found yourself dosing off and waking up while he was piggybacking you home actually. (This continued all the was up to high school)
Ushijima was famous for his strength at a young age. And once, he spiked so hard that the ball flew off course and went straight to your face. Ushijima genuinely thought he had killed you because the hit was pretty hard, and it made you lay there like you were unconscious. Internally, he was panicking. He thought this was the end and youâre breaking up with him. He immediately rushed over to check your condition while silently blaming himself for hitting so hard. He was only assured when you started moving again and laughed at the situation while continuously assuring him since he looked really sad and remorseful. (He started practicing his spike control a lot more since he didnât want that to happen again).
You who started going to his volleyball matches since elementary and found it interesting. Every time he scores. especially a hard one (triple blockers, scoring while his form was still crumbling, surprising the team by using right hand, you name it), he would immediately look for you in a crowd and you only continue playing once you gave him a nod or thumbs up or something like a signal of approval.
Ushijima who was strong and healthy most his life, so when he does get sick, it means the fever is really bad and he just dies immediately. You remember visiting him after school to give him get better cards from his teammates and classmates, he insists that he could sit up but you told him he should just rest and he immediately complied. You read him all the letter people sent and even helped writing his thank you letter to everyone that day. You could tell the fever was bad since he kept looking at the ceiling while squinting his eyes, trying to think of words. The fever was so bad that he could only see and see blurry lines. Then, you fed him soup and medicine that his dad left behind before work, tugged him to bed and went home. (He takes 3-4 days to recover average)
In high school, volleyball started getting really competitive and he would always stay behind after school to practice. It was also during this time that you realized he was changing. (Or something inside you were changing). His shoulders were broader and he looked more reliable than ever, but most noticeably, his features were getting more defined. In middle school, you could sometimes see his ears go red whenever he gets a compliment thanks from nice old ladies for helping with carrying their groceries bags, but it slowly disappeared once he started high school. Now he just nods. You started developing feelings for him during high school too an, saw signs that he reciprocated the same sentiment. He would buy stuff for you from the cafeteria or vending machine, stuffing your mouth with food, insisting that you should eat more (He did this in middle school occasionally), while stroking your cheek (now this, THIS is something He didnât do this before high school, was he getting more bold? I wonder who taught him) Ushijima has spare hair ties in his bag since he knows you would sometimes forget your own and learned how to tie your hair up for you. Piggy backs home from practice upgrade to princess carry and then there was the occasional flowers every month, complying to your wishes without much thought. These made you confused, you guys werenât a thing (you guys were, for Ushijima) his teammates asked who you were and he would always casually say you were together, proud and clear. So Tendou gave him tips about how to keep this relationship stable. Actually he was always this caring since kindergarten, but things just got more prominent as high school came, thanks to the help of Tendou, Ushijima acted more boyfriend like, instead of a best friend.
Sometimes you guys would plan a two people hangout, and you did it once more today. You were confused with Ushijima during this time and internally panicked so you also invited Tendou to tag along to the amusement park trip without thinking. On the day of the hangout, you found Ushijima getting even bolder. You caught him inhaling the scent your hair, putting hands on your side to keep you from being lost, looking at you with those eyes. And to make things more confusing, during important parts, Tendou would disappear among the crowds.
The whole day was awkward, at least for you it was, and on the last stop, Tendou disappeared once more. âYou guys go ahead, im afraid of heights.â Tendou chirped as he happily pushed you guys onto the ferris wheel. You were quiet the whole ride, and to top it off, Ushijima looked hella good today, especially under the radiance of the sunset. âDamn itâ you quietly mumbled.
âAre you alright? Youâve been awful quietâ Ushijima said as he looked at you, voice laced with concern. There it is, that expression that eye contact and especially the look in his eyes. The face that never makes your heart flutter every time. Looking at him now would only complicate the situation more so you started panicking and tried looked anywhere, everywhere but him.
âY-yeah im fine its just-â Before you could finish your sentence, he placed his hand on your forehead, checking for temperature and the words died in your throat actually.
âYouâre red. Are you really fine?â He looks at you while squinting his eyes. Which made you panicked and quickly slapped his hands off and stood up to a level that he couldnât touch your face.
Now this is just unfair, your panic wasnât completely unreasonable and uncalled for but it made you feel bad about yourself. A confusion and shock now display on his face. He squints his eyes slightly like he was thinking something. You donât know what he is thinking but he was probably shock and hurt.
âI- sorry- Itâs justâ You panicked and sat back down with your hands covering your face. âI donât know how to feel these past few days.â You started âYouâre making me confused every time you look at he with those eyes!â
âWhat eyes?â Ushijima said as he slowly cups your hand as he slowly guides it off from your face. âTHOSE!â You said as you once more panicked.
âUshijima Wakatoshi, youâve made me VERY confused with MY. FEELINGS. Sometimes, I FEEL like you act like MY BOYFRIEND, but then youâve been my friend for WHO KNOWS HOW LONG, I CANâT TELL IF IâM LOSING MY MIND OR IF YOUâRE JUST MESSING WITH ME.
Ive tried to calm down, and I myself, âNo, heâs just your friend, youâre overthinking,â but then BAM you say something that makes me think, Wait. Is he?? Is he actually into me. LIKE WHAT?!?!?
Im tired! Youâve blurred the line of our relationship and Iâm tired of pretending it doesnât affect- IN WHICH A LOT.
WAKATOSHI, I- I THINK I LIKE YOU, A LOTâ
.
.
.
Silence.
You could bring yourself to look at him, and he just stares at you.
âSorry-â You quickly murmured and this time, misreading the silence as rejection.
âWait no- Sorry Iâm just shocked.â Ushijima quickly assured âI thought we were already a thing.â
âHuh?â You looked at him with confusion.
-
Turns out Ushijima genuinely thought you were dating ever since preschool.
âRemember that candy I gave you? I that was my offerings for you to be my girlfriend.â He started talking about how happy he was that day and he thought of 1000 scenarios of him meeting and getting to meet and approval from your parents already.
This made you laugh out loud. You couldnât believe it, Ushijima was really a dork.
âI guess it canât be helped, but I noticed how you were really downed today so I bought the same candy as I did that day.â He admitted as he gave you the lollipop
âCome to think of it, we were still kids back then, and I didnât know a thing about, like⊠love or relationships. All I knew was that you were the prettiest girl in the world, so I confessed immediately.â He paused, eyes softer now. âBut as days went by, I found myself falling harder for you. I like how you laugh, how you talk, how you look, how you treat others, how you treat me⊠and a million more things I could say. Everything about you amazes me.â Then he looked straight at you.
âSo this time⊠I want to confess again. Not to the prettiest girl in the world, but to you. Just you. The real you.â
âI like you, Y/N, would you like to be my girlfriend and make it official?â
Arenât you the luckiest girl in the world right now.

OIKAWA'S GROWING PROBLEM
Sypnosis: OIKAWA HAS A TOO-CHILL-TO-BE-GOOD PARTNER. (Gender Neutral)
Oikawa Tooru was naturally good with people, his ability to make girls fall for his charm somewhat made boys his age wish they were him (or wish heâd fall down the stairs). During his career in Argentina, Oikawaâs fanbase exploded. What once was a local swarm of schoolgirls had become an international community of fans, cheering for him from all corners of the world. Heâd be swarmed by admirers, girls giggling as they handed him homemade chocolate, boys crying their eyes out as their girlfriends asked Oikawa for pictures. And he never even tried to hide his satisfaction.Â
His life was going good, no one was stopping him from doing whatever he wanted. He had everything handed to him on a silver platter. But that was his exact problem. NO ONE was stopping him, not even his FUTURE FIANCE. When they first started dating, he knew his partner was chill, easygoing, the type to go with the flow and not cause a scene. It was refreshing, really. No clinging (Perfect since he has volleyball practice almost everyday), no dramatic jealousy (Perfect for his fangirls), no constant need for reassurance. But as time went on (It's been 3 months), he found this âchill guyâ act was starting to make him grow restless. To be more specific, once, after a particularly intense match, he barely had time to catch his breath before he was swarmed with female interviewers flashing cameras, girls chanting his name, gifts being pushed into his arms like offerings. The sheer amount of fangirls could make anyone suffocate. And honestly? It was starting to get to him today. He was scanning the crowd, almost instinctively looking for an exit, when his eyes landed on his s/o, standing a few feet away. Calm. Unbothered. Giving him a thumbs-up and a lopsided smile like âYouâve got this.â
No jealousy. No possessiveness. And weirdly, it made something twist in his chest. âH-hey, Wait!â He tried reaching out before his s/o disappeared into the locker room. This was his first time having to face a crisis like this. His last girlfriends or partners were all demanding. They were the definition of high-maintenance. They needed constant texting, nightly calls, reassurance every five minutes, you name it! tracking his location, mood swings over liked photos, cryptic âwe need to talkâ texts at 1 a.m. leading to them breaking up with HIM. But this? This calm, steady presence beside him who didnât ask for much, who didnât even seem to want anything and thought out everything before telling him, that was new. And he didnât know if it was comforting⊠or quietly terrifying. He's scared that one day theyâd just decided to break up with him. Leave him high and heâd only realize it when he came home to an empty apartment.
Nah, that wouldnât happen, but he also thought that would happen and decided to test the water anywaysđđ. One night, after a long shower and an even longer day, Oikawa flopped onto the bed with damp hair and a towel still slung around his neck. His skin was warm, his limbs tired.
âJeez,â he muttered, propping himself up lazily, his voice still laced with disbelief. âOne of the reporters shamelessly asked me out on live TV today. Even though the team explicitly told everyone Iâm not available!â There was a pause. Then, without looking up from their phone, his partner replied, âWow, you really attract gremlins!â giggling. âShe slipped me her hotel keycard afterwards!â he added, sitting up straighter now, eyes more focused like he was looking for something. That earned a real reaction from his partner, their eyes widened slightly, caught between surprise and disbelief then quickly changed.
âWell you probably told her off like you always do to girls who go too far right?â they asked, flashing a thumbs up and a big smile. Oikawa stared, disbelief again. âYeah of course I did! I threw it away, alright?â he added quickly. âDidnât even look at the room number.â
A long pause.
ââŠWas it a suite?â âI donât know! I didnât check!â
They laughed, flopping back on the bed while he groaned dramatically beside them. âUnbelievable,â he muttered. âThis is the thanks I get for being loyal?â
Then that classic Oikawa half-pout appeared again. âYou could be a little jealous, you know..â A silence followed after. Instead of answering, they leaned in and started smothering kisses all over his cheeks, forehead, nose, practically everywhere relentlessly. âWhaâhey! Waitâ!â he laughed, squirming under the sudden affection. âOkay, okay! I get it! You care, you little menaceââ âJealous enough for you?â He looked dazed. And a little pink in the face. â...Thatâll do.â
"Love you too, Tooru."

A SETTER'S SILHOUETTE
Part 1 Sypnosis: Kageyama spends too much time sleeping in class with his back facing you, and somehow, you ended up remembering the curve of his shoulders more clearly than his face. After graduating, you travelled abroad to continue your studies and the king of the court's silhouette is engraved in your mind. Now that you've both grown up what will happen?
(Story could contain cliche scenes BUT ONLY WHEN BOTH WAS IN HIGHSCHOOL)
 âKageyama?âÂ
You stood there staring at the silhouette of your highschool days. The world was really small wasnât it?
Though your voice was barely above whisper compared to the swarm of fans surrounding him, somehow Kage turned around, eyes locking with yours like no time had passed at all.
-
Kageyama pov
His eyes immediately flashed with recognition. Without missing a beat, he made quick work of signing the autographs and motioned to your place immediately.
He couldnât believe it, you finally returned to Japan after so many years abroad and he didnât know a thing?! Was this a dream? probably not. But he slammed both hands on his face on the way to make sure he wasnât anyways.
Slam
(The slap was hard enough to make a few fans nearby jump.)
âWhen did you get back?â was the first thing he said after he made his way to your place.
You froze, for a second but he saw it. Then your hands flew to your hips. âWell, arenât you fast? A âhelloâ would be nice. Is that how you greet your good old tutor?â You smiled widely.
He blinked, his mouth parting slightly. He hadnât even realized the words had come out. âIâsorry. Hello.â Then, without thinking, he gave a small, stiff bow.
You laughed like this was very amusing. âStill as socially graceful as ever, huh?â
Honestly, he didnât know what to say, so he instinctively scratched the back of his head, eyes flicking toward the few lingering fans still whispering nearby. âDidnât think Iâd see you here.âÂ
He quickly changed the subjects to something else, eager to change the subject rather than dwell on his awkwardness.
âYeah, well⊠surprise.â You shrugged. âDidnât expect to see a familiar face (or should I say back) either.â
He let out a soft breath, he wasnât sure whether to smile or tense up.
âSo,â you said, tilting your head âHow have you been? Still having a hard time learning English?â
He felt himself jumping slightly at that. His mind wandered to the old cheat sheet you made for him during your highschool days. Still tucked away in his work desk, heâd still sometimes revise it whenever he had an international interview.
âI⊠mightâve.. a little,â he said, as he glanced away. âBut donât ask me to prove it.â
_
Reader pov
The answer came out awkward, stiff, but undeniably Kageyama. You tried your best to hold in your laugh from Kageyamaâs behavior.Â
First, his face was RED (from his slap). Second, he was still the kageyama from highschool days (You could tell since he still bowed down while saying âhiâ like the muscle memory from his high school days kicked in before his brain could catch up).Â
Nevertheless, it was nice. Despite losing contact for so long, you guys still have topics to talk about, even though you could tell that the Kageyama is VERY AWKWARD right now.
âReally?â you teased, You knew that look. He always glanced away when he was hiding something. And judging by how quickly he broke eye contact, you were right on target. âYou sure thatâs all?â You couldnât help it. You have every intention to tease him for his reaction.
Kageyama stiffened, looking away a little too quickly. âWell..â
You raised an eyebrow. âCome onâ You mused âAre you really really sure?â
His shoulders tensed. He hesitated, then let out a short sigh, barely audible over the hum of the crowd. ââŠI might still-â
âLil sis!â Your brother's voice rang through the room as he made his way over to your side, which successfully saved Kage from your claws.Â
With a swift motion, an arm was draped over your head. âWoah you know this guy? Lil sis! This is the setter Iâve been talking about!â
Your expression changed from smiling at Kage to glaring. âWell, his name is Tobio Kageyama, and yeah we went to the same class in highschool, Not-That-Much-Of-A-Deal-Anyways, BUT you wouldn't know since youâre always anywhere but HOME!â You said as you forcefully shoved your brother away.Â
âShit!â Your brother said loudly, but he extended his hand to Kageyama anyways âMy name is-â
âI know you, Iâve seen you on the court,â Kageyama said ,as he shook your brotherâs hand.. âYouâre a formidable setter.âÂ
Your brother brightened at the compliment, until Kageyama stepped forward and his expression sharpened. âWhatâs your jump set like? How consistent is your timing with the spiker? Do you run combination plays or just stick to quicks? What's your average serve speed?. . etc . etc. .â
Your brother blinked, visibly shrinking under the sudden interrogation. âUhâuh, IâI mean, I usually justâwait, what?â âWhere did you learn to do those-â
âWOAH HAHAâ You cut Kage off before he could go overboard. âWow! when my brother said he was facing a formidable opponent, I actually didnât expect it to be you!â
âWow! the earth really is small, no?â Your brother added. âAnyways I gotta borrow my sister for a minute. Some fans want to take pictures with me ykyk! Nice meeting you tho!â Your brother said as he dragged you away.
But before you could go too far, you felt a hand grab your wrist. âWait! Are you free anytime this week?â Kage asked, carefully.

THROWBACK TO HIGH SCHOOL (AUTHOR POV)
Tobio Kageyama had sat next to her for three months. Three months and yet she couldnât remember his face.
She only ever saw him during class, and even then, heâd always be asleep with his head buried in his folded arms, back turned toward her. Everytime the class gets boring, her mind would start wandering around the classroom. And everytime her attention lands on Tobio, and sheâd only catch the faint rise and fall of his shoulders. His back was definitely broad. Not in a showy, bulky way, but neither narrow nor willowy. His build was balanced and compact, just enough to show he was undeniably athletic. âIs he asleep in class since he spends too much time working out?â
âWhat a strange person,â she thought. Always asleep.
âCould it be because of the teacher?â No. He was like that in every class. No matter the subject, heâd always be dozing off. The reason he could sleep in every class was because Teachers had called him out many times before, but they eventually gave up. Once they realized heâd just keep doing the same thing, they stopped bothering.
âMr. Tobio!â the teacher called.
Kageyama jumped slightly in his seat. The sharp tone caught your attention too. âWhatâs your answer to question 12. c?â the teacher asked.
You glanced over, curious. âThis Tobio was surprisingly calm for someone whoâs been asleep the whole period. Dang,â you thought to yourself. âBut judging from the way heâs muttering under his breath⊠thereâs no way heâs got the answerâ.
On the other hand though, Tobio was freaking out! He was having an internal panic. But all he could muster was âUh⊠ahâŠâ. âDangâ he thought to himself âIâm screwedâ
On your side, you sighed. With a quick flick of your pen, you slid your notes across the desk and pointed discreetly to the answers.
His eyes flicked to the page, then to you. There was a moment of hesitation, but he gave the smallest nod and began reciting the answer. Correctly, to everyone's surprise.
The teacher paused, eyebrows raised. â...Correct.â
A ripple of quiet laughter spread through the class. Kageyama kept his gaze forward, as if nothing unusual had happened.
âThis guy is never going to graduateâ You thought to yourself.
_
Kageyama pov
"Move, idiot, move!" It took everything in his body to push himself forward. He grabbed your hand and asked âAre you⊠um, free this week?â he managed to ask, his voice tighter than a tense set. âWhy is my throat so dry?? Damn it!â Panic flickered behind his eyes. He felt himself getting more embarrassed by the second. (This guy has played so many volleyball tournament, faced so many formidable opponent, yet asking for and old friendâs number made him feel like he was facing off Oikawa in a big tournament)
You and your brother turned to him. âOh! Uhm, this weekend?â
âHereâ You quickly took the phone from his hand and put your number on his Iphone 16 promax and return it.
âBy the way your face is getting redder from the slap you did to yourself earlierâ You pointed out.
Kageyamaâs eyes widened, he was so tense from asking for your number he didnât notice himself âOh- I didnât realizeâ.
You took the initiative and continued âWell gotta go help my brother, call me later!â
_
YOU POV
The school bell rang, and the halls instantly erupted with noisy kids flooding out of classrooms like a swarm of hungry zombies. You were calmly packing your bag, ready to head out, when a shadow loomed beside your desk.
You felt a sudden chill sweep across your right side. It raised goosebumps down your arm (Couldnât be the classroom window cause it was CLOSED and on your LEFT). 'WTF WAS THAT, IS THIS BECAUSE I SKIPPED CHURCH LAST WEEK? OH GOD THE EVIL SPIRITS ARE AFTER ME NOW' You were internally panicking.
Slowly, and cautiously, you turned your head to the right. And it was Kageyama, staring at you intensely.
âPLEASE TUTOR ME IN ENGLISH!â âIâLL GIVE YOU ALL MY LUNCH MONEY!â
âHuh?â âHa?â He raised his head after your words and you blink at his.Â
âWhat? Uh, no, sorryâIâm kinda busy lately.â You coughed, covering up your embarrassing interaction.
âPlease! If I donât pass this midterm exam, I might not be able to play volleyball.â He said, a little more urgent now. His head was back to bowing down at a 90 degree angle.
But anyways, that gave you pause. He looked genuinely.. distressed. Which made you sighed.
His face shifted, confusion creeping in. âOhâuh, itâs fine if you donât. I'll figure something else outââ
âYou know what? Fine,â you continued âSorry, I was just a little surprised, thatâs all.â
He blinked. âSurprised?âÂ
âI didnât think someone like you would actually care for studying,â you said with a smirk. âI mean you sleep most classes so you donât seem to care about studying. But why me though?â
He paused for a second, then spoke again. âAs for why you⊠I mean, youâre pretty good at English, right? You helped me answer that question today.â
You tilted your head, curious. âAnd?â
âI have a friend. Tsukishima. Heâs good at it too, butâŠâ
âBut?â you pressed.
âIâd rather die than ask him for help. Iâd rather study, revise, and test all by myself.â
Your eyes widened at how dead-serious he sounded, like he meant it literally. Then you burst out laughing âAlright, alright! How about tomorrow after school, Iâll tutor you for an hour. Every Thursday until midterm exam.â
His face lit up, just a little though. âReally?!â
âYeah. I like people like you,â you said with a grin, tossing your bag over your shoulder. âYou're too blunt for your own good, but itâs kinda refreshing.â
Kageyama nodded. âOkay! Iâll pay you pay, I promiseâ
âAlright! byeâ You said as you left.

KAGEYAMA POV
It was 9:43 PM.
The match had ended hours ago. Now he was sprawled on his bed, the lights off, the only glow coming from his phone as he faced a new dilemma: how the hell was he supposed to text you?
You Someone he hadnât seen in years. Someone who randomly showed up today and somehow, somehow, ended up giving him your number.
Now he was staring at the chat screen with your name at the top, blank and intimidating.Â
âHey, this is Kageyama.â Backspaced it. Too dry.
âItâs Tobio Kageyama.â No duh, he thought, scowling.
He typed again. âThanks for earlier. Iâll see you this Weekend?â Too confident..
He sighed and dropped the phone on his chest, staring at the ceiling. His brain was short-circuiting, just like it had earlier when youâd smiled at him and casually said, âJust text me.â
Oh god, he thought, this was like the first time he had asked you for tutoring English that he had to collect all the extrovertedness he had to ask a stranger for help. (I mean it was less intimidating since this time you actually know each other but whatever)
He ran a hand through his hair, groaning. Then, before he could chicken out again, he typed:
âHey. Itâs Kageyama.â
He hit Send. Immediately rolled over and shoved his face into the pillow. And waited.
