It’s easy to look at the size difference and personality difference and assign Will the role of “person needing affection” (lord knows Will more than deserves to get some love and support and care and Hannibal certainly is inclined to caregiving) but the way we tend to emphasize that creates an imbalance…. Will is a strong and capable person and Hannibal is kind of a needy disaster, you know?

Like when they go down, when Will throws them off the fucking cliff, they’re coming from a position where Will was honestly doing pretty fine!! Could’ve been better but he was okay! He had a life and it wasn’t bad at all. Sure, we can speculate that it probably would’ve fallen apart eventually based on a lot of things, but at the end of the day Will honestly did a very decent job of moving on. Maybe he wouldn’t have been happy forever, but he really was just about as okay as a person could be expected to be in that situation.

Hannibal, on the other hand, was incredibly far from okay. He turned himself in bc he couldn’t handle the thought of living the rest of his life without Will’s attention. He’d tried to move on and he’d failed absolutely spectacularly and he decided he would rather sit and rot in the BSHCI than be free if it meant giving up all chance of seeing Will again. He writes affectionate letters to Will and when Will finally shows up in person he actually asks Will to call him by his name bc he’s so goddamn desperate for even a hint of intimacy from him. He needs Will in a way that Will does not need him.

So once they’ve gotten together? I don’t think it’s going to be Will who needs the most reassurance. Certainly it won’t be Will who needs ALL the reassurance. And I think that Will will find it gratifying to be so obviously and earnestly needed, so desperately wanted. He’ll appreciate having that kind of power. And he loves Hannibal, and he’s the kind of man who’s never wanted to be perceived as small or weak, nor does Hannibal perceive him as such.

So let Will be the goddamn big spoon.

imagine with me for a moment if, instead of Tobias entering during Franklyn's appointment, he entered during Will's. imagine their first time taking a killer down together being that early on, with Will still being technically law enforcement and thus feeling especially protective of the civilian that's been thrown into the fight (or, at least, that's how he justifies his protectiveness to himself).
