“Oh, come on, Damie. The waitress just said we made a cute couple. ‘S not a big deal.” The Freelancer’s words were only a little bit slurred as they grinned at their grumpy companion. The buzz from the wine only helped embolden them, they usually wouldn’t try to purposefully poke the fire elemental. But his reactions were oh so fun.
“She shouldn’t be making assumptions regarding her customer’s relationship statuses. It’s rude and unprofessional.” He grumbled out before he took a sip of his own wine, though it didn’t hide the way his cheeks flushed.
They snickered, setting their empty glass down before they leaned their shoulder into his, “You’re getting so worked up over it though! What’s that one quote? ‘The lady doth protest too much, methinks.’?” They giggled as he pushed them off of him.
“Your alcohol tolerance is shit. Who gets drunk off two glasses of wine?” He snapped out. “And I’m not protesting too much, Freelancer. I’m protesting just the right amount. We aren’t a couple. We’re friends.”
“Pffft, you know you love me. You wouldn’t put up with all of my shit if you didn’t. You would have flambéed me by now.” They mimed an explosion before they leaned back against the arm of the couch. “Face it, Damien. You liiiiike me.”
“I’ll kiss you right now to prove that I don’t feel anything for you.”
The Freelancer paused, giving him one long, slow blink as they processed his words. “Um...sorry, I think I misheard you. What-”
“I said, I’ll kiss you right now to prove I don’t feel anything for you.” His dark eyes were serious as he set the wine glass on the table and turned toward them. “I put up with your shit, because we’re friends. Nothing more.”
They snorted softly, “If you wanted to kiss me, Damie, you could have just said so. You didn’t have to-” His hands hit the armrest on either side of them, their words dying in their throat as he leaned over them. With the heat coming off his body, they were surprised the couch cushion didn’t ignite at the contact.
“Stop running your mouth, Freelancer, or I’ll put it to use.”
They really couldn’t help themselves, the words tumbled out with a snort, “You taking lessons from Gavin or-” His lips crashed into theirs, their quip ending in a soft moan that he easily ate up. His lips were so soft yet so searing, moving against theirs like he was trying to memorize the feel of them as he pressed them into the couch.
A gasp tore free from their throat as his fingers tangled into the hair at the base of their neck, jerking their head back enough to deepen the angle as his teeth grazed along their bottom lip. Their hands slid along his sides up to his back, fingers fisting in his shirt to pull him in closer. His mouth moving against theirs was kind of sloppy, rushed in his need as he lost himself in them. The Freelancer’s head was spinning, theirs senses full of him: his searing touch igniting their skin, his scent surrounding them, his taste on their tongue. They gasped in a breath when he eventually pulled back, the two staring hazily at each other as they pulled in ragged breaths.
Of course, the Freelancer had to break the silence, “So...you don’t feel anything for me?” Damien groaned at the question, his body stiffening as he went to pull away but was stopped by their grip on his shoulders. “Can you show me how you feel for me again? You know... to really drive the point home?”
He snorted, rolling his eyes but he leaned back down. They could feel his lips brushing against theirs as he spoke, “You brat...I can show you as many times as it takes.”
