Can’t risk it
The duck of creativity. I waited so long for it.
“I will take fate by the throat; it will never bend me completely to its will.”
— Ludwig van Beethoven, from ‘Beethoven’s Letters’ (via aegeane)
Haven
Khazdorum could not but help but smile softly as he looked over the stony ranks arrayed before him. Stone Fiends, Gargons, Gargoyles, and even Stoneborn troopers stood before him. Orphans, all, the remnants of forces serving the Denathrian Loyalists who had been routed and the Venthyr imprisoned or slain.
Each was found chipped and shattered and near death. Khazdorum had personally cared for as many as he and Higgins could effectively treat, and he’d pleaded and begged Theotar and the Court for the resources and the masons he needed to save these discarded soldiers.
To their credit, Renethal and Theotar sacrificed as much of their personal wealth as they could into Khaz’s request, but this was all that could be spared. It had cracked and splintered Khazdorum’s heart to see so many that might have been saved slip through his permafrosted fingers, but he threw himself instead into saving those he could. His motive was not solely altruistic, though his empathy for the stone creatures was absolutely genuine. The gargons and dredbats were not sentient, possessing an advanced but still animal intelligence. They’d had no choice in this civil war. The Stoneborn had a choice, perhaps. But it was a choice to side with what was a rebellion or to side with what was their lawful master. But these particular salvaged stone soldiers all owed their lives to Khazdorum Stonesplitter.
His title of Count was still largely ceremonial, but here it finally proved useful. Those he had saved that could speak for the most part asked to serve him, and though him serve Renethal. The Stoneborn knew it was more likely the loyalists would just starve them to feed themselves or their other, uninjured troops, or use them as suicide troops. Faced with that choice and the defeat of Denathrious, they instead chose this short and taciturn mortal in his padded armor and battered slouch hat. The dredbats and gargons proved easier. They understood who had nursed and fed them when they lay dying. They understood who now gave them food and shelter. Who had given them a safe haven. Khazdorum had always had an instinctual connection to the Stonewright’s creatures, especially the gargons. Those he had pulled back from the brink of destruction all recognized him as their master now, and even now the gargons stood in ranks of stone while the less disciplined dredbats wheeled and engaged each other in dogfights above the formation of troops.
Khazdorum smiled again at them. They were not many, barely a company in strength, but their numbers were growing. A fine force for garrison work, scouting, spearheading an assault... or, Titans forbid, a Forlorn Hope. The thought of his hard won and dearly loved Stoneborn and gargons and dredbats lying broken and lifeless in a stronghold’s breach was like a nail of burning ice in his heart.
He had learned to loosen his grip on regret, but his grip on responsibility and all it entailed was still ironclad like the ice in the heart of a glacier. Only if there was no other way, he thought. No other way, and I lead them myself. He would not budge on this. The enemy might kill him if he lead them. His conscience would kill him if he did not. He had no doubt of that.
He stepped forward to give his Stoneborn lieutenants his orders. More drills, this time on diversionary tactics. Teaching the troops and the gargons how to look like they were massing for an attack without exposing themselves to direct attack, and to make their numbers look stronger than they truly were. The Kyrian were in disarray, much like the Necrolords and the Venthyr had been. He was not going to be found wanting again when the time came to act. Not this time.
@frrrozi did an INCREDIBLE job at capturing Mun-Li! So so so happy with the results and am infinitely happy I was able to snag a spot on their waitlist.
Anyway shoutout to Tidesage RPers.
Y'all have to deal with Blizzard having almost completely abandoned the religion after kinda-sorta resolving half the order being converted to the void by Azshara,
with the Storm's Wake proceeding to be completely absent from the LITERAL RAID IN THEIR OWN SHRINE (unless you count Pike being like 'yeah you should probably do something about that idk' as being present) and from the defeats of Azshara and N'Zoth who are responsible for the corruption of their religion which they might be rightly angry about,
and also numerous "Tidemother is actually [other deity] theories" which, okay, may have some grounding in canon but there's also a chance Blizzard simply did not think about the implications of a purple-loving kraken goddess who whispers to her followers and is into the abyss.
Tidesages are woefully under represented.
Can’t resist this:
🌟+ Stupid
"You think I'm going to get angry, don't you? Well, ok, I want to. But I'm supposed to talk about a memory so, um, how about this one."
"I ran into Sam one night. I think I was worried about something but I can't remember what. But she calmed me down and we talked to people. One of them was Aven."
Tyra smiles. "I don't get to talk to him very much but Aven's really nice. I told him that Stormwind was overwhelming. I guess it still is. And I said I was thinking about writing everything in a journal. Aven said that he'd like to read it one day."
"So, um, I did. He said he'd be the first to read it if I ever publish it or share it." Tyra looks amused with herself. "The title for the first entry is This City is Stupid and I kept the pattern going. It's really hard to do when I only have good things to say!"

Bah, let’s do it. I need to make an editting pass on the Tel'Andu dream story before I post it anyway.
Hope.
Mun-Li smiles and sips her tea before leaning back in her chair and affixing you with a warm look.
"Hope. What a vast word."
She sighs deeply and looks out her window at the chirping Stormwind birds.
"I have a troubled history with the Alliance and this city. I have to state that, since it played such a huge part in the dissatisfaction of my being here. I never thought I would enjoy being here or look forward to seeing any of its residents. I was so caught up in my own anger and frustration that I lost hope altogether."
She smiles and looks at her reflection in the surface of the tea.
"That all changed when I met Amelia and Mary in a bar in Stormwind. They offered to keep me company and eventually said I should look for a job. That led me to Abighail and Liv and the rest of Foxrun. That led me to Tyra and the Dragoons. I went from nothing to having a home, friends, and a small makeshift family that I love very much."
Mun-Li looks at you and nods.
"It led me to hope."

History
"Ach. History. There's a word wi' many a meanin' to it. " As he spoke Khazdorum gestured with his hand, the cheroot grasped therein leaving an acrid trail in the air. "As grand as the saga of th' world’s makin' and Titanic remakin', as small as what ye had fer tea last Thursday." The Dark Iron archmage paused to sip from a glass of Sweetfur mead. The fragrant Paw'don Pleasantry swirled enticingly in the glass, as if to demand all that look upon it go forth and inform their friends and family of its excellence. Khazdorum's face, however, took on a grim and harrowed expression. "Fer me... it's word wi' a darker connotation. I didnae come ta the Alliance wi' the Reconciliation between Dark Iron, Wildhammer, and Bronzebeard. No... No, me an' mine were long gone from Shadowforge City by that point. My mother an' father both didnae approve of th' Ragnaros worship an' such. Dindae approve at all. So Father planned and executed our escape. 'Course, no that many lands willin' ta accept Dark Irons inta th' fold. Ironforge certainly didnae want us, Lordaeron an' Stormwind neither. Father bein' a mage was the key. He got someone in Dalaran ta listen. They accepted us as th' refugees we were, in exchange fer Father's service. That I remember. Never a word of Dark Iron secrets ta th' Kirin Tor. He'd serve them, he'd said. He didnae trust them. I should hae listened better ta him on that count. They certainly didnae trust me wi' much, e'en after my father... died. Dark Irons had made their... History. So I was tolerated, an' nothin' maer." He frowned, eyes distant with bitter, bloody memories before he continued again.
"History. I was there at Dalaran when Cursed Prince Menethil came crashin' through wi' his Scourge. I'd long finished my apprenticeship an' spent a few decades beneath th' city, keepin' the sewers workin' and... dealin' with the escaped experiments, one way or th' other. Hated it. Cursed it. Nasty, dull, disgustin' and unthanked work... an' it probably saved my life. Nothin' the Scourge wanted was in th' sewers. So those of us as were there packed as many of th' populace as we could cram into the breathable spaces we held while me an' anyone who could fling a spell or hold a sword held th' doorways. A few of th' lads I actually liked started callin' me Warweaver after that. Seemed fitting. So I kept it. Almost a shame nobody Dalaran considered important ended up down there wi' us. Might hae broken me out of my dead end career there." He shrugged, clearly not all that heartbroken. "Might have. Then I'd still be alone. I dinnae have accolades or political power, but I have friends. Friends and a lass I'll walk through Perdition barefoot and bleedin' fer." The mage grinned, his dour expression finally banished. "Fer once, I came out ahead."

Correspondence
Another shadow-less night in the Ember Ward of Revendreth saw Khazdorum sitting at his desk in his Sinfall quarters. Higgins was bustling about, the dredger splitting his time between attending to the things Khazdorum had asked of him and his own various side deals and hustles. A more strict disciplinarian might have had their objections, but at this point Khaz had a better understanding of how life in Revendreth actually functioned. Dredgers were what made the everyday possible so that Stoneborn and Venthyr alike could preform the vital task of reforming and tending to fallen souls- which in turn served the dual purpose of redemption for the soul and precious Anima for the Shadowlands.
Besides, he thought as he went through his various letters to ensure he’d not missed any, Dredgers mostly hustle dredgers as practice for when they manage to work one over on the ‘Fangers,’ and frankly any Venthyr marked for such a practice almost assuredly deserved whatever minor mischief befell them.
His eyes focused on the letter from one Seraanna Longveil, she who had been indeed abducted and brought to Revendreth from the living world. It had confused him at first, as it referred to a “summons” from himself that she had understandably refused. As his title was mostly ceremonial to indicate the faith and favor such worthies as Prince Renethal and Duke Theotar placed in him, the thought of any summons he were to send out being taken seriously had baffled him. It had baffled him until he’d spoken with Theotar, who cheerfully explained over a cup of... tea that many outside of Sinfall itself were not fully privy to all of its workings and dealings.
“The briefing,” Theotar had said, “for the most valiant search and rescue party was delivered most exactingly by your good self, Count. Those present understood it was under my own good and lawful authority, but of course you are aware of how naughty rumors spread! I have had such a time explaining such things to those who are only hearing of this third and fourth hand! Oh, such frustrations! They come to me clamoring! ‘Glorious Duke! Why have you let an Outsider take charge over our bretheren? Why is he allowed to threaten Venthyr?’” Khaz had grimaced at that. He’d certainly outright implied violence were it found that they had harmed Ms. Longveil in any way, but he’d thought at the time it was the best way to ensure her safety. He’d observed veiled, subtle, open, and naked threats woven seamlessly into how the Venthyr treated both each other and the other Shadowland denizens and thought perhaps it was the language they understood best. He’d apparently misjudged, which was hardly a new occurrence where social matters were concerned.
It hadn’t really galled him to send the promised reward to Baroness Vucrysa, who had apparently found Seraanna independently of his search efforts, but he certainly wished it had gone to any of those he’d actually set to the task. In the end he’d decided to pay out the anima, pragmatism winning out. Such an act would heal more rifts than obstinately refusing over petty and pedantic misgivings. No. Far better this Baroness be cemented firmly as an ally.
He turned his attentions to another letter, a more recent one, and his heart sang. He’d already read it at least a half-score of times, but his slate-gray hands opened it any way as he conjured in his mind the image of its author.
Som’awa.
She’d been hard at work training with her teacher, and as such he’d not seen her in a fortnight. He’d been coming very close to being gloomy and grumpy, he had to admit, but this letter had arrived and as far as he was concerned he would wait for an eternity if he had to. Again his eyes passed over every pen-stroke and line. ‘My dearest Teddy Bear,’ she’d opened with, and he’d chuckled with joy and adoration. The letter detailed some of her efforts, much of which dealt with stamina. Khazdorum nodded again, as he had the other times he’d read it. He’d long known that using the Light with any sort of heavy exertion left Som’awa light headed or even unconscious.
It never seemed to bother her, but Khaz worried all the same. The cynically pragmatic voice in his head also helpfully reminded him that she would never be made a combat medic for that very reason. The worst that could befall her would be an assignment to a large, well-defended hospital like in Ironforge or Stormwind. He stilled the voice. He saw so many lovers fighting side by side, it was... selfish to exult in the fact that his own lover would never be asked to do the same. Besides, his conscience ‘helpfully’ supplied, Som’awa had the knowledge that Khaz was going into combat fairly regularly... and he knew that she disliked fighting and always worried he might get hurt, or worse. Khazdorum waved a hand, to symbolically silence his warring thoughts. He was going to finish re-reading this letter, and embrace fully the warmth and joy it provoked in him. Then rest. No point in making it easier for his enemies.
Knight of Pentacles - the most stubborn adult your character knows.
That's... that's a tough question. Discounting himself, Khaz is surrounded by fairly stubborn individuals. Khardrun or Ulfengard seem like fairly obvious candidates, but Airinn and Tyra and Mun-Li are no pushovers either. Hrm. I think in the end Khardrun's insistence that all problems foreign and domestic can and should be solved with either a kick to the unmentionables or a brisk and thorough head-butt edge out the competition in the end.
★ Two of Pentacles - has your character ever ‘dropped the ball’ on something important?
Khazdorum has gained a justified reputation for bad communication about dangerous things he's attempting or in the process of doing.
Just before the start of Battle for Azeroth, the Silver Star Dragoon garrison in Lunarfall was besieged by a Forsaken army, which left the Dragoons split between those trapped inside and those outside trying to relieve the defenders. Khaz ended up as the only combat mage inside the walls. As a result he started doing some very dangerous things, such as drawing more thermal energy into himself to boost his ice spells. As a Dark Iron he's got very good heat resistance so he could cheat that way for a while, but not forever.
Where he dropped the ball was in not telling anyone that he was basically cooking himself alive trying to do the work of an entire mage combat team.
This continued for about three days until as the siege was being broken and a counter charge exited the fort. He had just about reached the "I'm about to pan sear my brain in my skull" point, and blinked into the middle of a enemy formation and Ice Blocked. The ice formed around his superheated body and exploded, wiping out a sizable portion of the formation, scalding him badly over much of his body, and putting himself into a coma for three days. He got yelled at by several people whose opinions matter dearly to him.
As a Pandaren rogue he is very fond of put later: "How can someone so smart be so stupid!"

Eh. I’m game.
🔥!
Since your main is a chronomancer, it is only fitting my take be one about time.
People need to slow down and take their time with things more often than they do.
I think a lot of people rush things far too much. Characters that go from 'apprentice' to 'master' in a few weeks are a particularly glaring example, but I think it extends to a lot more than that—excessively sped up pregnancies, characters that go from strangers to married in a month (and it wasn't an arranged marriage or intended to be an impulsive one on behalf of the characters), or even something as simple as always skipping (the already extremely condensed) travel time in favor of immediately bipping to the next location by the fastest OOC means.
Mostly, I think, it stems from wanting instant gratification. They don't want to wait long for their characters to get shiny new abilities or to 'achieve' their next 'life accomplishment' like marriage or childbirth—and it might well be boring to have to wait for those things to happen, but I think events need room to breathe and settle instead of jumping every three minutes to deliver the next punch.
Moreover, I think taking time with things gives them more weight when they finally do occur.
And let's face it: we've all had 'great ideas' for our characters we were amped about for the first bit before realizing they didn't fit as well as we thought they would and we actually don't really like them. It's easier to maneuver back out of poorly-fitting decisions when they're not major things yet.
Travel time being ignored/completely glossed over is mostly a pet peeve, but it is one that peeves me. Obviously the world in-game is a lot smaller than it is in lore (in-game, it only takes 45 minutes for an epic ground mount to run from Farstrider Square to Booty Bay, which is... obviously not the case in lore), and RP events frequently being held in far-off locations means some degree of travel needs to be hand-waved if you intend for your characters to attend events.
But I have a little challenge for people who frequently skip over travel in RP:
Select a Point A in one zone and a Point B in another zone. Obtain friend(s) to join you and RP walk between the two points. No running unless it is necessary to make a jump or catch up after falling behind. Flying mounts only when necessary to get somewhere with no ground route.
Take your time. Admire the scenery. Wander off the route because you saw something cool over there.
You might just like it!
They are dead on correct about this. I’ve been guilty of it, and very recently at that. My enthusiasm at times takes my social awkwardness hand in hand and lead me down a merry path to problems. So yeah. I’ve got to take this to heart and let things breath.

I wanna play that.
