i stand by my stance that the 'they' version of chain of pronouns better conveys the game's intended experience, but man do sora's ??? responses to everyone on destiny island teasing him really just click perfectly into place in 'he' version

(this section of the novel having sora explicitly being confused about whether they're referring to namine or riku here in his internal monologue is. so fucking loud.)

it is interesting... in kh2 halloweentown, sally and jack are like "im happy just so long as i can be with you" and they have donald and goofy telling sora like "im sure kairi's the same way". but at the end of the game when sora and riku are in the realm of darkness, they don't even try to find a way back to everyone else until a way just literally appears for them. because they're happy just being together.

i put the scenes side by side (cut down a bit for time, so know that my added transitions are the swipe effect, the fade to black in the RoD scene is a canon implication of the passing of time)

(i was curious if that "maybe i never gave her a real present after all" line from sora was meant to be specifically about kairi in jp, or if it was one of SENA's signature "assuming this statement is specifically referring to kairi when it's probably intended to be more ambiguous" moments.

according to a friend, that initial line in jp IS more of a "maybe i've never given a real present before" in general kind of statement. which is a very small detail, but something to consider)

it's also interesting how, when sora imagines himself and kairi dancing together in place of jack and sally, they aren't imitating the more classically romantic hand placements that j+s are doing

instead, it more resembles the little dance sora does with donald and goofy at the beginning of the game

Not to mention in the novel (and Riku's character files short story) we have this:

 "They both gazed absently up at the starless heavens.  There was no telling what time of day or night it might be here- they couldn’t be sure what that light on the horizon was.  The humid breeze from the ocean brought a hint of a chill.     And yet they felt completely content to be here- because they were together.     Sora quietly closed his eyes, and then Riku did, too." -KH2 Novel
