Thinking about Anders finding out about the cure for Tranquility
There’s just so much to unpack with that.
He probably had other friends that had been turned Tranquil over the years besides Karl. It’s always been wrong, always been horrible, heartbreaking, and inhumane on so many levels.
And then finding out that there was a cure this whole time? and it was kept secret when it could have saved so many lives??? That’s not even mentioning how it’s used to create Seekers. Imagine. The cure for something so inhumane isn’t given to those being oppressed and threatened with it, and is only given to the oppressors so they can be better at their jobs (oppressing). They can’t even use the argument that ‘its too difficult’ to do, because they were consistently doing it on their own people to make them stronger!
The whole argument for the Circles and Templars is that mages can be possessed. But making someone Tranquil - and then reversing it - makes them immune. Isn’t that just so fucked up?? The fact that they pretend a cure doesn’t exist? They’re always complaining about demonic possession being a threat but....they....have a solution to it??
They don’t care about possession. They care about having a scapegoat - in fact they care more about a scapegoat than about all the casualties caused by possession. They care about having something they can use for propaganda. If it wasn’t for the threat of possession, why would a religious organization have any need for an army???
Power. They want power. (big surprise)
And the cure is further kept a secret (even from the Seekers who unknowingly go through it in their training) so that they have an endless supply of people willing to become templars, believing that they are protecting people from demons, and doing what’s right in the eyes of the Maker.
So Anders would realize all of that, yeah? Karl, and countless other innocent mages, are dead or Tranquil just so the Chantry can have its precious militia, and have something to hold fear over the people of Thedas.
Karl could have been cured. Anders killed him, and now he’s got even more guilt to live with, even though there’s no way he could have known there was another way. Heck, even if he had known, he wouldn’t have known how to do it.
