Book Recommendations
Had a good run for reading over the last 2 weeks -- some highlights:
Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End - About medicine and death, whether through old age or illness or both. Probably the toughest book I’ve read all year but one of the most rewarding and thought-provoking. Main takeaway: have the hard conversations ahead of time so in a crisis you’ve got a north star.
Dataclysm. If you like the OKCupid blog posts and/or Edward Tufte, you’ll enjoy this book. OKCupid’s lead analytics guy does a deep data dive into attractiveness, age, etc issues.
Triggers: Creating Behavior That Lasts - insight into behavioral change. Good follow on reading from The Power of Habit
No One Understands You and What To Do About It. The psychology behind perception - basically focuses Thinking, Fast & Slow on just this one issue and builds it out. Key takeaway: first impressions really do matter and are hard to change.
Swoosh. Unauthorized history of Nike. Great reading if you’re into marketing, sports, or building companies.
Ogilvy On Advertising. At points gets too specific in the agency world but lots of great content on ads.
The Game I’m late to this one, but the author was on a podcast I listened to lately and I was intrigued. All about the pick-up artist community which is really just another lens into psychology.
The Girl On The Train. I was skeptical, but it was a fun read comparable to Gone Girl.
