Society views

Why do we feel that it’s important for us to fit society views? We act according to the status stature society has failed to completely explain. Focusing on the outlook of our appearance we undermine the actually personality of people. Personally, I am very self-conscious of what I wear. I feel as if I wear the wrong type of clothing society won’t accept me for who I am. Personality is no longer a common trait. We are too focused on who has the biggest butt or the who has the longest hair. Sometimes I am enraged with what society feel is important. We prance around in the most expensive clothing hoping to get a reaction from somebody or anybody. Most people get too cocky and become this illuminated conceited monster that craves attention from any and all things. Then what doesn’t help is the portray in social media. Females are supposed to be “thick” a flat stomach with a large chest and a big behind. The other part of society wants long hair, blue eyes and a size 0. For males they have to be 6 ft , nice smile , 12 pack and romantic. They want males to be living hallmark cards. Social media has a very big part to play in this we mimic what we see on social media. Almost all of us has shared a picture or meme on Facebook. We share these models or as we call them “beautiful people” and say “oh I wish I looked like that “ or “ Can’t wait to look that”. We should we feel threaten to enjoy the skin we are in. Why does society have this gravitational pull that we fail to realize is affecting our growth to better ourselves. Society has implemented a damsel in distress call for us. Because we’re so wrapped up in our appearance and what society feels like we should, people generally overlook the discoloration of society’s Wim. So we frantically find ourselves in imaginative realties and are pushed over the edges of tomorrow. I guess the biggest question comes in play , why do we instantly follow society and its many flaws to create our own lifestyles?

I agree that social media plays a key role in the way people view society and the way society views people. There is a trend that has started and social media exaggerates that trend. If you do not follow the trend, then you are going against the rest of society and that should be okay. We should live in a world of originality and diversity. If everyone tries to be the same, our world would be just plain boring. I feel like so many people follow society because people are afraid to have their own ideas and/or opinions about things because of the fact that society is not always nice.

As we all know February is coming to an end. I would like to show appreciation to those that aren’t as appreciated as others for Black History Month. A person such as Marcus Garvey. A few or a good amount might know a lot about Marcus Garvey, but I’m just learning about him, so I would like to share for people who don’t know much about him.z Marcus Garvey was born on August of 1887, in the famous island known as, Jamaica. He was a public speaker for the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements. The Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements is an intellect movement that focuses on the bonds of African people. The movement encourages and wants to strengthen the bond because in their perspective, it is essential for the African people to be one…to be unified. This movement plays a part when it comes to Black History because it did not only fight for the rights of African American, it went more in depth with the belief that unity is important. Marcus Garvey participating in the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements is very significant because it allowed him to find the Universal Negro Improvement Association. This association was “dedicated to racial pride, economic self-sufficiency, and the formation of an independent black nation in Africa.”(https://www.britannica.com/topic/Universal-Negro-Improvement-Association). In other words, the association’s purpose was kind of like what the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movement was for. It was to strength the African American race while also helping the black communities. He found the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Jamaica, the year of 1914. Later that year he visited a few black neighborhood, that was suffering from poverty, in Harlem in New York City. He had a thing for poor urban black neighborhoods. All he wanted to do was help black lives. The association was re-evaluated after he got deported back to Jamaica in 1917. (Those who would like to know why he got deported…it was because he was convicted of mail fraud). However, that did not stop him from working within the black communities. He just started working in another country, which was Africa. Marcus Garvey may not be known like Martin Luther King Junior or Rosa Parks but, he did do just as much as they did; he just did it in a different way. Marcus Garvey played a role just as them. He helped make the African American community stronger, more unified, and proudful of their race. And for that, he’s well appreciated.

This is my first time ever hearing about Marcus Garvey. It is disappointing that some African American contributors do not get the recognition that they deserve and that other contributors have gotten. They all deserve to be known for their impacts that they have made. I believe that school systems should study a more broad variety of African American’s who have made an impact, instead of always talking about the same handful of people (ex. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X). Even though those people may have made a more significant impact, others have also made important impacts that should become recognized. I am pleased to have learned about Marcus Garvey.

These Last Blogs

These last blogs have been difficult to describe in simple terms so I’ll do my best to compile my experiences in these next few lines. The first blog was an experiment: choose something you feel strongly about and expand upon that feeling with evidence. This was rather clunky and frankly boring to write even if it was something that had to be put in writing. The next blog I remember fondly is the long night post for just how vivid of a memory truly is and how rare a night like this was in my life. It saddens me that by putting such a night in writing, I don’t really put the night and all of the sensations from that night as well as I would have liked to. I feel like these last few blogs were educational about my own brand of writing but it also reveals a weakness that my writing has and that is length versus quality. This weakness could stem from the need to simplify the work so the average reader can follow the blog and actually read it without being obligated to. A lot easier said than done when you realize that after some point the blog gets dull and you get the feeling that it’s time to find a different post to read.

Overall, this entire Tumblr idea is effective in certain ways being that the people can talk about something and have many individuals read and perhaps respond to such posts. The only thing I disagree with is the idea of only being graded on the specific prompt versus posting in general because while I can see where the instructor was coming from since a person might just post a bunch a random thing to get the grade. However, I feel it’s a bit constricting as a writer because only the post I make for the class is counted towards my grade when there might be more posts to be read. That one post could be terrible and reflect poorly in the grade book but I could have just made an absolutely beautiful post on something like suicide prevention or some other topic that means a lot to me.

I agree with what you said about the blog topics. I was not a fan of them, but the topics themselves helped with class discussions and projects that we were working on at the time. We were not able to choose topics of our own that were creative. I also noticed there is a change in my style of writing from the first blog to now. Before when I would write, I would occasionally repeat some of the information. Blogging has helped me change my writing because before I would repeat myself and now my writing is clear and to the point. Thanks to these blogs, there is no more repetition in my writing.

When I developed my work Before I started blogging I had to write out my on pieces of paper before typing them because I had a hard time typing out my responses straight from the head. Blogging every week has helped me be able to to read a prompt and type the ideas into the blog as I developed them on the spot. Even though we just did weekly blogs the writing still deserved proper structure and grammar. Blogging has helped me present my ideas and opinions about things to my audience without offending anyone. I usually am not one to want anything I write to be available for anyone to read unless it is for a class, so I feel blogging has made me comfortable with the idea of someone else reading something I wrote. It has also made me more open to criticism from others. If someone has come across my writing I like to know their opinion whether it is positive or negative. Following other people from our room is nice too because you get to see what they’re interested in and the topics they like to discuss and the different viewpoints everyone has.

The topics given every week to blog about made a good use for social media. It wasn’t nonsense that we could discuss. It either had to do with something we were discussing about in class that week, or we had free will to choose a few topics we wanted to discuss. Blogging every week gets you into a habit of writing, which makes better writers. One thing I could work on is my commitment to blogging every week. Making my blogs more “real” and personal is another thing I could work on. The audience likes realism. Having an audience to speak to is motivation itself because it’s almost like you always have someone there(a follower) to read/ listen(that’s the idea anyways, it doesn’t always work that way). Blogging has helped me practice formatting and citing whatever source that is needed. It has helped me develop my writing in a way where I have to be conscious that other people have the opportunity to read what I have to say, so I choose my words in a way that I do not compose to the audience; I am simplifying providing insight on a topic and my overall opinion. Overall I did not totally dislike blogging.

Presentation Response #10

The presentation I thought was the strongest was the protest against banning guns. I felt this presentation was the strongest because I support guns, with gun control laws of course. Guns are violent but when you use them for violent affairs. Someone having a gun in their home isn’t necessarily a flight risk. There’re people in the world that have guns that use them for self-protection. This presentation presented that fact very well appealing to the pathos of the audience through personal experience; I have no experience with guns but I was able to connect because I know of people who have been in certain situations and if they did not have their weapon to protect them who knows. But on the contrary I also have people close to me that have been in horrible experiences where guns have been pulled on them and that is why I would advocate for strict gun laws. If people are going to have these potentially dangerous weapons in their homes there should be regulations they have to follow. It is hard to determine who are the abiding citizens and who are not, but removing guns out of the homes of people who see them as a way to protect themselves shouldn’t be.

The presentation advocating for pro life and ending the harsh procedures of removing the baby changed my view. I have always been one to be against abortion, but I feel that the situation should be taken into account. In rape for example some women just can’t handle baring a child that was conceived during a terrible situation as such. That is why I believe that the choice should be theirs. Taking the right to decide to bare a child violates a woman's rights just being a woman. We should have a choice what we want to do with our bodies, no one should get to make that decision for us; taking this right away would be like making a women go through changes and things she may not be ready for. But the baby could be removed in a way that is less inhumane as described during the presentation. Just because the unborn seed cannot speak, it feels just like a human would. The poster that was presented was a great representation of this idea. The unborn child in the mother’s wound trying to speak out, not fully understanding what they did to deserve such a thing appeal to pathos. I was emotionally moved by this original piece. I would still advocate for pre choice but the process should change and light was shed onto that.

From the three blog topics i read today, I feel like the topic about financial corruption should be a topic we discuss in April. Financial corruption affects all of the people who could do without it. Families are being taken advantage and as a result become homeless, or jobless. There are not enough financial regulations to prevent corruption. Overall, we all suffer because money that could help America prosper isn't even being traced. Big banks are paying off these agencies to lie about their ratings just to trap more investors. I had no idea that the housing market crash was due to banks being reckless. We have come a long way since then, but we haven't, therefore this is why we should discuss financial corruption.

When talking about world issues, most people will bring up: poverty, world hunger, national debt, governmental corruption etc. But hardly anyone ever brings up the corruption of Wall Street as an issue; that is until recently in the 2017 election, where candidate Bernie Sanders mentioned how he would regulate the financial sector, particularly Wall Street. When people bring up the economic crash of 2008, do they really know what happened? Does the general public have an understanding of what led millions of Americans to lose their jobs, and homes? Not many do, and that is why financial corruption must be discussed more frequently in class; it has affected our lives dramatically, and most people don’t even know it.

Financial corruption is responsible for the suffering of many people. One example is the recession of 2008. The situation that occurred in 2008 was due to the crash of the housing market in America. There were many factors leading the 2008 financial crisis but the biggest one was CDOs. CDO (Collateralized Debt Obligations) are basically bundles of mortgages that banks sell to investors. These bundles are filled with tens of thousands of mortgages, which people pay off over time with interest. Investors buy these CDOs looking for long term profit over a period of time. Each CDO has a different rating, from the highest AAA, to the lowest B.

CDOs that are A’s or BBB, BB or B, have a high risk of not paying off, because the mortgages they are filled with are risky; this means the home owners are not paying their mortgages. The big banks such as Goldman Sachs, and Lehman Brothers were bribing the rating agencies to give them the ratings they wanted. They knew that if you could bundle many high risk mortgages with high quality mortgages, you could sell them as AAA’s. They were basically lying to the investors. When the housing market crashed in 2008, the widespread unemployment we witnessed was due to the recklessness of the Banks. Almost no one in the world predicted that the housing market would crash, and when it did, all of that money was gone. The amount of free reign the private sector is given is horrifying. There are also many financial regulations that have to be put in place in order to prevent things like this from happening again. This is why we need to discuss financial corruption more often.

Banks are some of the biggest scammers next to Insurance companies of course . They have so much power that many people don't even understand they have. Many people are cheated into paying thousands of dollars and don't realize the high risks they are in from losing everything. I think your topic is important. Financial corruption affects the middle class people, who can barely afford day to day living. Many of the people who are committing corruption are people who already have money and want more. Because of greed there is money that is not circulating through the system which isn't benefiting the economic system of the nation. It is hard for the USA to get over certain economic barriers because there is so much money flowing through corporations that isn't being accounted for or taxed.

many years we have gone through life believing that we were born with a specific gender but what if i told you that your gender may have been assign to you by doctors. That alone would start me question what else they could be doing to us as newborns. The babies that are born with a male and female’s genitals they are called intersect babies. Intersect babies are babies that a born half male and half female. the doctors take it upon themselves to change the child’s gender based on a chart they created back in the 70’s. this is basically doing surgery on a new born baby with or without the parents permission. this to me is very disrespectful and inhumane because this is basically doing surgey on a person who cannot speak up for themselves. i believe a baby who is born intersect should be able to make their own decisions. Doctors use a chart to determine whether they should be a girl or guy by if the the boy was born with a penis about less than 1 inch will be determined as girl and a girl with a clitoris shorter than 1 cm will live there life as a girl. these are medically unnecessary intervention because these will cause future complications for the child and make life a bit more difficult for the child. Doctors need to understand that intersex babies are regular babies and they should be the one to decide whether or not they should have surgery on themselves. These babies are what shap our future so whatever negative reaction they get with in there community they will have the ability to change that and be to create a less judgmental future. Intersect isnt all negativity sometimes it is well need because of the health of the baby maybe in danger. Some babies that are born instersext develop issuse because they are born intersex and surgery is well need. In those cases doctors perform the surgery using the chart to determine whether or not they should leave the baby a girl or a boy. their are multiple disorders that can come from being a intersect baby some of these disorders are “Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, in which overproduction of hormones in the adrenal gland causes mas-culinization of the genitals in female infants” this is just one of the symptoms that a intersect baby goes through

I have never heard of babies that have been born a male and a female. I am trying to picture what that would actually look like when it's fully grown. Would they have the ability to give birth like a women and ejaculate from a penis tip? There is more biological factors that make a women a women and a man a man. I’m not sure I would want to live my life in the middle of two different genders personally, so I wouldn't mind the doctor choosing for me. But I understand the importance of your topic and letting the individual choose for themselves which gender they would like to be recognized as. But any other human being is born the gender they are and they don’t get to choose so which rights are being violated? They are who they are born to be.

Daylight Savings (Blog #6)

Since it just happened today, I want to make this blog about daylight saving time. Daylight saving time as everyone knows is when we all turn our clocks forward or back to, well save daylight during the day. Personally, I was never content with losing a whole hour of sleep but it is nice to have more daylight. I was curious for why we had to do this every year, so I did some research about its history. So let’s learn more about daylight saving time, shall we? It all started in 1784 with Benjamin Franklin’s essay named “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light”. This was given to the editor of a journal named “The Journal of Paris”. In his essay, he wrote that “Parisians could economize candle usage by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning, making use of the natural morning light instead”. It was also noted that he wrote that in a joking matter. On July 1908, daylight saving time was used for the first time in Canada and then on April 23, 1914 it was officially implemented and spread through many of cities of Canada. Skip a bit to April 30, 1916, the very first country to use daylight saving time to go forward an hour was Germany. This time was used in Germany to save energy for war in World War I. This gives one of the reasons why we turn our clocks forward today. Around 1918, the daylight saving time, or fast time as it was originally said in the United States, bill was made and signed by Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States. A Pittsburgh industrialist by the name of Robert Garland was the one who initially brought the idea from the United Kingdom to the United States. For this, he was known as the “Father of Daylight Saving”. Now Daylight Saving time is used in many places all over the world! Hope you enjoyed the little history of daylight savings.

Everything has a history, clearly it is true. I never thought to look into how the idea of saving daylight all started. But what I don't understand is why that fellow by the name of Robert Garland is known as the “Father of Daylight Saving” when all he did was bring the idea to the United States even though it was already in effect in Germany? I personally love sunlight so I am not against setting the clocks back to get more of it. It is the best natural light, and it is important to get as much as possible. I feel like your topic is important because people should know why they set the clocks back, and its history. I also feel it is important because sometimes people confuse daylight savings with change in light at certain times of day in the winter vs the summer.

What is Scientology?

Scientology is the study of the spirit in relation to itself, universes, and other life. Scientology beliefs are built upon the fundamental truths about life; that man is good and his spiritual salvation depends upon himself, his relationship with his fellow peers, and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe. Furthermore, scientology is a religion that is concerned with the full rehabilitation of Man’s capabilities, awareness, and his own immortality.

Scientology was created in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard originally developed a program of ideas called Dianetics, which was defined as a spiritual healing technology and an organized science of thought. Hubbard promised that the Dianetic treatment would release and erase psychosomatic ills, painful emotions, and leave the individual with increased powers of rationality. Hubbard stated that Dianetics “was more accessible to the average person, promised practitioners more immediate progress, and placed them in control of the therapy process.” Unfortunately in 1952, the foundation soon went bankrupt and Hubbard lost all rights to his semi publication Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. He then recharacterized the subject as a religion and renamed it Scientology.

The beliefs and practices of scientology are based on research, and its doctrine is equivalent to scientific law. Many describe scientology as a civilization without insanity, criminals, and war where the world can prosper, honest beings can have rights, and man is free to rise to greater heights. Scientology does not impose or preach about the idea of God, but the people are expected to discover the truth through their own observations as the become more aware. In scientology there are two major divisions of the mind: Reactive mind is thought to record all pain and emotional trauma, while the analytical mind is a rational mechanism that serves consciousness. The reactive mind stores mental images that are not readily available to the analytical mind; these are referred to as engrams. As engrams accumulate, people move further away from their true identity. These beliefs are revolved around the immortal soul, the thetan. Scientology teaches that the thetan is the true identity of a person. Hubbard taught that the thetan brought the material universe into being largely for their own pleasure.

For many years, people are argued that scientology is cult-like and is dangerous, and by definition scientology is a cult: “a small religious group that is not apart of the of a larger and more accepted religion and that has beliefs regarded by many people as extremely dangerous. It is dangerous in the sense that Scientologists believe that Scientology is vital to themselves, mankind and the universe and it’s success right now is more important than anything. In the eye of a scientologists tarnishing the name of scientology is the worst crime you can be accused of, and this idea allows real problems to be overlooked by members and kept in the dark from the public for the greater good. Protecting the image of Scientology leads them to hide things like death, suicides, child molestation and neglect from the media and its members.

The Buckeye Bullet

Jesse Owens was born on September 12, 1913, in Oakville, Alabama. His birth name was James Cleveland Owens, later changed to Jesse Owens, often referred to as “The Buckeye Bullet” or “J.C”. At the age of 9, Owens moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Owens was a notable runner even in elementary school. The gym teacher, Charles Riley noticed him running on the playground and recognized the talent he had. Owens later wrote that Riley was the first white person he ever knew and that he gave Owens hope that there were other white people who would come to love African Americans.

After setting records in junior high and high school, Owens was accepted into Ohio State University. The University was not desegregated at the time he started school there, forcing him to live off campus. There was also no scholarships for him so he had to work multiple jobs in order to pay his tuition. While competing at Ohio State University, Owens won eight individual NCAA Championships and made history during the 1935 Big Ten Championships where he broke three world records and he tied another record, within a 45 minute span. The astounding thing about those records was that they were set after Owens had fallen down a flight of stairs and was suffering from spine and back injuries. Even today, competing in those four events would be crazy, beating the records in each is even more amazing (all while being in pain). No one’s ever done it since. In all, Owens competed in 42 events that year, winning them all.

During the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, Owens sealed his place in history. At the age of 21, he tied the world 100-meter dash record at 10.3 seconds, set Olympic records for the 200-meter dash (20.7 seconds) and the broad jump (26’ 5 ¼"), and ran the first leg for the Olympic and world record-setting 400 meter relay team (39.8 seconds), not to mention, all in the face of Adolf Hitler. Hitler criticised America for including blacks on its roster, but of the States’ 11 gold medals, six of them were won by black athletes. Owens was easily the most dominant athlete to compete. This was critical in Jesse’s life because the Olympics took place in Hitler’s Berlin, where he thought the olympics would be a showcase for the Aryan athletes (considered a dominant race by Hitler). Owens shattered the myth of Aryan superiority.

When Owens returned home from the Berlin games, he was greeted with a hero’s welcome. They had a ticker-tape parade for him in New York City. Ironically, Owens had to take the freight elevator up to the reception because he was black. Although he returned to America as a hero, he struggled to earn a living, unlike other white American Medalists who were offered film roles and became film stars during that era. Eventually, Jesse had to file for bankruptcy.

In 1976, he was finally properly recognized when President Gerald Ford awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest of civilian honor awarded by the U,S., signaling to the world that Owens had “transcended the invisible obstacles of all things racial, to become a galvanizing, ethnic role model for the entire nation”.10 years after his death from lung cancer, on March 31, 1980, Owens received the Congressional Gold Medal. USA Track and Field has an annual award and it is called the “Jesse Owens Athlete of the Year Award” because he inspired so many people, to say the least. Jesse Owens paved the way for African American athletes after him by showing them that they can do anything-no matter who is against them, no matter what the odds or adversity.

“Ain’t I A Women” Analysis (Blog3)

Sojourner Truth’s speech, “Ain’t I A Woman” was delivered at the Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio in the year 1851. In this speech the main objective is to speak out against the inequalities between men and women and how it should be extended and include women of color; Truth was born into slavery and became a runaway slave. Truth wanted to challenge the idea and the general understanding of womanhood and argue that all women should be treated equally. With extensive use of logos, pathos, and ethos, Sojourner is able to effectively stress that she is in fact a woman and deserves the same treatment as a white women. This speech has been proven to be the classic expression of women’s rights.

By sharing personal experiences about being born into slavery and being sold to other human beings allows Truth to use pathos to establish an emotional connection with her audience at the convention. “I have borne thirteen children, and seen them all sold off into slavery, and when i cried out with mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me!” Sharing the fact that she had to watch all thirteen of her children be sold into slavery was not to gain pity, but to shed light on the fact that she’s had to suffer like a mother, why should she not be considered a women with equal rights just because of the pigment in her skin?

An effective attempt to seem reasonable to her audience Truth using ethical examples, forces the audience to accept her argument that women can handle and endure the same as a man. “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down, these women together ought to be able to turn it back." Truth basically says that if it took a women to turn the world to sin, it will be the women to make it right again, or at least make large contributions to it to improve it. Women should be given the an opportunity to make something of themselves.

“Then the little man in black there, he says women can’t have as much rights as men, ‘cause Christ wasn’t a women! Where did your Christ come from? From God and a women! Man had nothing to do with Him.” This statement made by Truth uses obvious religious logic to counter a statement made by a man. She explains the Christ developed inside of a women placed there by God himself. He was birthed from a women and no man had any influence. This goes to support the main thesis that women play an important role, even black women and they should be given that role.

The infamous killer whale Tilikum featured in SeaWorld Park passed away January 6th, 2017. SeaWorld trainers, and owners grieve, for they have lost “family”. But in the eyes of many Americans, poor Tilly was nothing more than a murderer, who should have been put out of his misery years ago.

“Tilikum had, and will continue to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired”, says CEO Joel Murphy. (CNN news). This maybe be true; however, SeaWorld has undergone a shit storm from the public since the documentary “Black Fish” was release in 2013. Black Fish is a documentary based on the capture and life of Tilikum. But it goes deep into the history of it, and explains more about the life that Tilikum endured that drove him to the point of murder. It exposes the corruption of SeaWorld, and the sick lies they spun into their favor, and implemented them into the minds of many people. Interviews of previous trainers and coworkers that lived the life of a SeaWorld trainer and how blinded they had been to the truth.

The article goes into detail about the death of trainer Dawn Bradcheua, that will forever be connected to Tilikum. Dawn Bradcheua died in 2010 when Tilikum grabbed her by her ponytail and dragged her underwater in front of a live audience. At the time of the accident, SeaWorld spun the media to make it seem like the death of Dawn was in fact her own fault because she shouldn’t have had a long ponytail to make sure their investments were protected. There have been countless trainer - whale accidents at SeaWorld that have gone unnoticed, or proven to have been “trainer error”, when most of the time it is whale aggression. This incident caused the media to turn against SeaWorld. They wanted justice for Dawn primarily, but many Americans wanted to see Tilly released but were sadly disappointed.

SeaWorld Owners have clearly learned nothing from previous accidents, and have become ignorant to future ones. “The Orcas will continue to live at SeaWorld for many years to come, inspiring guest in new and natural ways” said the company on their website. (CNN news) How can a whale inspire in natural ways, in an unnatural environment? The whales have become human entertainment in exchange for what? They are indebted to us and it cost them their lives. Tilikum never asked for a life of capacity. Is he a murderer, or are his actions justified by humane interference?

I’m going to tell a story of the time “I” lost my brother.

I was 16 years old, my mother sent myself and my two younger brothers Marcus and Kahlil to Walmart to get a few things for the house. Now at the time we lived in the walking distance from everything so we slipped on warm clothes and began to walk. Marcus is the youngest sibling I have, and at this time he was around 6 years of age. Growing up, Marcus grew into his own person at an early age. He grew up with four older siblings who all did their own thing, and when we interacted with him we treated him as if he was our age. This caused a great deal of issues because he assumed he was entitled to give his opinion and do his own thing being only 6 years of age. He grew to have this attitude where he felt he no longer had to listen to me; he had all of the answers in his underdeveloped brain. Now don’t get me wrong Marcus is a caring young boy who is respectable, kind, and extremely intelligent(thankful for my mother and father parenting) but when it came to his siblings he rarely listened.

This particular day my mother made me take him to the store with us, and Marcus was having none of the bullshit. As soon as we left the house he takes off down the street I yell after him but he doesn’t stop until he sees aa small dog running in his direction. He makes a quick U-turn and darts back not realizing the leash attached. A small smile plays at my lips and I am content because now he is too scared to leave my side; I won’t have to chase him this time.

I have developed more patience dealing with the little devil. Kahlil however, being a young male at the age of 14 just starting puberty has not and also having none of the bullshit. Everything seemed like it was under control until we entered Walmart. Marcus takes off once again and I make Kahlil chase after him this time while I pick up the things for the house. I don’t have to see them to know what’s going on because I can hear Kahlil yelling “Marcus NO!” ,“Marcus do Not touch that”, “Marcus put that down”,” Come back” I laugh because I can imagine the look of struggle on my brother’s face as he tries to contain the little devil. Fifteen minutes or so go by and I see Kahlil heading toward me without Marcus. The panic doesn’t settle in until I ask him where Marcus and he just now notices he’s gone. I take off down the aisles and I scream his name. This goes on for THIRTEEN MINUTES, but it felt like hours. An older lady with brown hair began to help us look for him and it wasn’t until then did I spot him screaming my name tears running down his face scared out of his mind. I embrace him and hold him so close to me that I almost suffocate him. We return home and tell my mother we lost her baby boy for thirteen minutes, and that day I learned two things; 1. Kahlil can never be trusted to watch after Marcus EVER again and 2. You get blamed for everything that goes wrong being the oldest, even when you did nothing wrong.
