Blog 6 (redone)

For this blog I wanted to discuss the role movies have in portraying the state of mind of a culture, during a certain period, or era.  Besides documentaries, movies are made for the entertainment of others, so that they can be enjoyed and praised for their cinematic style, and storytelling. Although one other purpose a movie has is, reflecting the state of mind of society, depending on where and when the movie was made. Many movies do this without even realizing it.

In fact there was an entire art movement in Germany, called German Expressionism, in which almost all the art reflected the nation’s state. Expressionism, according to Museum of Modern Art in New York, they state that “Extreme angles, flattened forms, garish colors, and distorted views are distinctive features of Expressionism”.  The movies produced during this time used distorted views to produce such negative emotions.

German expressionism was a movement during the 1920s in Germany, where almost all of the art produced during that time reflected negative emotions. This movement expressed such negative emotions because of the state of society in Germany at the time.  Germany had just lost WWI, and the country suffered from massive inflation, and food shortages. It was no wonder why most movies coming from Germany reflected such negative emotions.

One prime example of German expressionism is The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In the movie, a young man narrates the events that led him to where he is. He talked about how he, his best friend, and his fiancé went to the festival in town to the night walker! There was an old man with man in a coffin who was asleep. The old man proclaimed that the man in the coffin was a sleep walker, and that when the old man awakened him, he could tell the future. The Somnambulist, as the sleep walker is called, is awakened and tells the best friend he is going to do die. The next day the best friend is found dead.

This movie is a thriller/horror, movie which portrays very negative emotions throughout the whole film. What really makes this film an expressionist film are the props used though. The props for the houses and the lighting are distorted, and dark; to emphasize this movie portrays negative, dark emotions which reflect the society’s state of mind. This shows how movies can portray a society at any given time.

Ever had a hobby that you thought you would pursue later on life? I did. I thought I would’ve worked on becoming a professional dancer like Misty Copeland. I used to love to dance…well, I still do. Unfortunately, I just don’t dance as much as I used to. (It’s funny because when I first started dancing, I hated it. I only danced because my mom forced me to…good thing she did. It brought out another side of me that I never really embraced). I started dancing when I was 10 years old. I did all types of dance. From Modern to Salsa…African to Tap…Ballet to Jazz. I practiced, rehearsed, and performed at least 11 types of dance within just the first 3 years as a dancer. Within those years, I’ve grown to love dance. It felt amazing to be able to do half of the things I was able to dance. Like when I was about 11 years old, I was able to do a split with my right AND left legs. (In other words, I had a split on both sides). Saying that now, is no big deal because splits aren’t anything special compared to the other tricks in the dance world. However, back then it was a big deal because it made me feel capable of doing absolutely anything that came with dancing. I had both splits in just one year of dancing. Others usually practice basic things like that from the time they’re 3 years old. That’s why I kept doing it. I wanted to see all the obstacles dance might throw at me that I was capable to doing. I was 13 years old when I took dance into high school. The same way college has majors is the same way my high school has majors. Only difference was that my high school offered five performing art majors…which included dance, drama, art, vocal and instrumental. So I was a dance major at my high school. Which meant that I was dancing everyday. Freshman year, I thought that this is what I want to do. Dance was fun and…hard but fun because you had a family to get through the hard parts with. A family who understood how much work and technique and time dance took. However going further into high school, it made me realize like dance isn’t what I want to pursue. Why? Well because, dance is very competitive. In all reality, everything in life is a competition. But I guess I didn’t love dance as much as I thought I did to deal with the competition. It wasn’t only about the competition, favoritism played a big part. To the point where even if you work your butt off and was clearly better than the usual people who go solos or the leads, you still wasn’t going to get a solo or a leading part. And because of that…it didn’t make dance fun for me anymore. It become like an unfair sport in my perspective. Thus, I didn’t want to pursue dance as a career anymore.

This post was really relatable to me, the audience member, in many ways. Many people have had hobbies, and things they loved, that they wished they could pursue as a career later on in life. I can tell you really like dancing, since you practiced many styles of dance, from many cultures. You described how dancing made you feel like you could accomplish anything; I feel the same way when I used to practice martial arts, but I didn’t want to pursue it as a career though. But it helped enrich my life, as dancing did to yours. I understand that you had to give it up as a career, pursuing a career in that area is really tough; especially when only some favored people get chosen. As an audience member this was really relatable to read.

Views of the blogs

As i look back on my blog post this semester, my work has changed by me being able to talk about things that i have read or have done with other people in class rather then just talking about it in class or going home and not thinking about it again. The blogs seemed to me as a way to see ither peoples views on things and compare and contrast other peoples in the class, thoughts to my own. It has changed the way i jusr come home and not talk about the things we did that week. The blog post even let me say what i would like to have said in class but was alittle shy to say out loud.

The blogs can help a person kind of figure out if they would like to continue to have a tumblr because for like my self, i did not have a tumblr before this class, i have none about by seeing the icon alittle but i never really knew what it was about i thought it was a boring app that you could post pictures on, i was not even close to creating my own profile for this app until now and this class has changed my views on Tumblr about what Tumblr is about. It showed me that Tumblr is like a calm facebook, less drama and more about just what you post and no one can dislike what you say.

I might continue working on my opinion on things as far as pointing out what needs to be changed. I am a really nice person so when i have to tell some one what needs to be fixed as a homework assignment, i feel as though im being kind of mean. I need to work on not feeling bad on telling someone what needs to be fixed because it could help what the person is working on rather then hurt the persons feelings.

Bloging has not put an big amount of change in my writing, but that is not a bad thing. It had helped my way of talking about different things in a way that everyone can understand rather then on a essay type fashion. I get to talk about things in a way that is comfortable, it makes writing feel less stressful as what i viewed it before vlogging. Do not get me wrong though, the first few blogs did feel like my usual essay but now its making my view on writing less stressful.

I agree with what you say about how writing throughout the semester has made it easier for you to contribute to class conversations. I also have felt that writing consistently has allowed me to put my thoughts in the fashion I want. As an audience member, I can relate because I have also felt the same challenges you have faced while being in this class. I also agree with your statement that, it is more comfortable to free write on tumblr; even though we are doing work through tumblr, the setup and feel of tumblr makes it feel fun. A little bit of how i think

My name is crazyingenuity,I choose this name because it suits my personality, yes i can be weird and and have those why moments, but i tend to just think outside the box. I always want to be different, if a majority of classmates do something similar 9/10 i always going to want to do something completely  different. On another note i do not, do not respect plagiarism or cheaters  best not to do it.I expect this class to e pretty simply but still engaging but i do hope everyone can take opinions, but not disrespect the other party’s ideas.Blogging especially tumbler does not have a nice rep and can get a little eradicate  but i do think  its a nice a idea and a bit different for a class, unique is good.

I can be a nice person, as long as  you treat me with respect. Those of you who have a siblings, i do wish i was you would love to have sibling it can be really annoying and boring  by yourself treat them who knows you might need them for some money later. Don’t of course use them as money bags. Im the i want to pick your brain because its fun type and can be a little mischief.Example i may say or ask a hypothetical question, for example If a person male or female etc  works a MacDonald, he can provide for himself may or may not have a family but its a stable job   without living a check to check month are you or are you not independent( you can answer if you like). how i would answer this question? i’d say no we are not independent and no shape or form things are connected, and i mean everything and some shape or form. Bigger flipper manager etc, everyone in that store or company depend on the customers. No customers no money,the company can not function you need the money to buy supplies  no cows or potatoes etc, no food no food, no customers, no money  no money now new check to pay for the bills. which this can stretch in a bullion different ways. No money there will be poverty,  unemployed people means less,less jobs euals bad economy wich a place like america ccan make it stretch to other countries if there is no support. we are all connected as the human race we need each other. I really like the name you chose, and how it relates to your personality; you can be a bit crazy, but that type of crazy gives you new ideas, ideas and thoughts most people wouldn’t have had if they were normal.  You have many topics you covered in this one post, but that’s a good thing. As an audience member, I feel like know a lot more about you from reading this blog. You talked about your own personal standards, and world issues, which as an audience member, intrigue me. BLOG 8

I participated in my 3rd fashion show today. It was for my organization “Fashion Student Association”. I seen many great upcoming designers who I have faith in that will make in the fashion industry. My friends clothing brand was in the show today. I modeled for his brand and actually felt amazing walking down that stage with a lot of confidence. Seeing the support from the people always I see all around me gave me a lot of heart and motivation to expect much more and never settle for less.

There are many people who are too afraid to follow their dreams, and it is clear you are trying to follow yours by participating in fashion shows, and trying new things. As an audience member, this is very entertaining to read. It is also very cool that your friend has his own brand. People should always try to follow their dreams. Reading this blog, I feel much closer to you as an audience member, in the sense that I have some insight into your life, and your ambitions. I think my writing has improved significantly since I started blogging on tumblr. They say practice makes perfect, and I think my writing skills have improved due to the amount of practice I was subjected to. Blogging has helped my writing in a number of ways such as: writer’s block, understanding the use of logos, ethos, and pathos in writing, and it has helped me to write longer essays. These were areas I had trouble with before, and writing consistently has helped improve them tremendously.

When it came to developing ideas for a paper, I had a hard time. The first challenge I would always face is writers block. I had more trouble writing the introduction for some essays than the body paragraphs. I used to spend so much time on getting started. Writing a minimum of 400 words, weekly, is like writing a short essay every week, and after the first couple of weeks writing blogs, I started to notice that I could develop my essay faster, without that much effort. I believe this is due to the deadline of the blogging, which forced me to write faster, and more efficiently.

Blogging weekly also improved my use of logos, ethos, and pathos. When we first started learning about logos, ethos, and pathos, I had a hard time incorporating these concepts into my writing. Blogging helped me to practice the use of these concepts, which are the foundation of any piece of writing. I learned to analyze articles based on these concepts, by writing weekly in my blog; since some blog assignments told us to analyze articles based on these concepts. The practice from blogging weekly, helped me learn, and internalize these concepts.

           The biggest change I noticed from blogging, was the output of writing I was producing. Before blogging, it would take me a long time to develop a piece of writing, but since I started, I can write essays faster than before, and stay focused while doing so. I had no idea I was capable of writing so many pages weekly. Before I had trouble writing a single page in one day but now, I can write a page about any topic in less than 30 minutes. Writing on tumblr has helped the speed of which I write, and the speed at which I can develop my ideas into writing.

           Blogging has helped me improve in all these areas, but I still need improvement. One way I will continue to improve my writing skills is to continue to analyze literature, and to write more pages for any class assignment. I feel with the tools I developed in blogging, I can defiantly improve even more.

Zach’s presentation on limiting gun control, was very insightful and changed some of my views on guns in general. I believe this was the the strongest presentation so far, because of the logic used during the presentation, and the information available. This presentation also changed my views on guns.

Zachary advocated for limiting guns in the united states, but not eliminating them completely. Most people when it comes to guns, think guns should not be in the hands of any civilians at all. This is understandable since many people abuse guns, and use them to commit crimes. I always believed that guns taken out of the streets is a good thing, and had this view for many years. Though, some people do need a gun for protection against these criminals who acquire their guns illegally. So completely excluding guns from the public is dangerous because, most people who commit crimes with guns, obtained them from the black market, which leaves the public vulnerable. Civilians should have public access to guns, but under strict requirements.

Getting rid of guns is pointless, but raising the bar on who can have a gun is not. Though it is true many criminals obtain their guns from illegal sources, many purchase them legitimately. Raising the requirements for obtaining guns is a logical choice to preventing tragedies involving guns, because those individuals who those requirements have a very low risk of misusing their guns.

Also, Zachary brought up the types of guns that can be purchased. Right now, combat assault rifles are available for sale in many areas of the united states for the use of hunting. Buying such guns for sport hunting is unnecessary, because they fire off multiple rounds. It is also not necessary for self defense, since a simple handgun will suffice. These guns are unnecessary for the only two uses a civilian can have, so taking these away from the public seems like a logical choice.

Zachary also had firsthand knowledge on the topic through his family. Zachary stated he has been around guns since a young age, and was taught how to use them properly by his father, and grandfather. This helps Zachary’s ethos in his project. Also, the logic throughout the project was sound, and Zachary invoked a bit of emotion when describing the situations when one would use a gun for self defense. All these factors helped develop Zachary’s presentation, and made it the strongest.

Topics

A topic we should speak on in class is being adults and what makes a person an adult. For example what must have to happen for a person to know that there are an adult. Also, why aren’t we taught how to be an adult in high school or in college we just have to learn on our own as well as being a parent. People have different believe systems but, universal what makes a individual a good adult. 

Another issue we can speak on in class is social issues that are going on world wide and how us as individuals can start movements to make the world a better place to live in.

I agree that we should discuss being adults in class. Transitioning into adulthood is tough, especially when you are just entering the first stages of adulthood. Being an adult is difficult; it means caring for yourself completely, making responsible decisions, and thinking about the future. This is really tough for most kids to transition to, because we never really received any training for this. I also think all of us in class still do not have a full grasp on being an adult, myself included. It would help all of us to discuss this in class, so that we can all help each other develop into better human beings.

problem

I feel like one problem they we have today and that is continually getting worse and we have yet to really talk about it is fake social media information. Social media is used by all of us throughout the day. Most the information on social media is just from our friends and family. But there are other companies, fake pages etc. on social media. This causes a lot of spam and spread of false information. These pages are making memes that people share because they find it funny or relatable etc. But now days some peoples entire view on politics has nothing to do with the politician’s actual policies but the memes meaning. People hate trump because of these memes which are full of false information. People love Trump based off of false memes and information. The artist of these memes is creating a big problem by spreading all of this false information because we as a generation are buying into it. When you see a picture that says something have you ever fact checked it? Maybe we do this sometimes but do we fact check the things we see on social media enough? In my opinion, no. I am also guilty of this myself. I’m a fan of the show Shameless that just recently got popular. I recently shared a link that had a picture of the character “lip” and said he got into an argument with the producer and quit. I didn’t even bother to click onto the link itself to read more or see where this information is coming from. I didn’t fact check or make sure what I was reading was from a reputable, valuable, source. This isn’t really a huge problem when it’s about an actor. But I feel like there are many times where this could potentially be a he problem in the future for social media. Where eventually it’ll just be filled with so much nonsense and people will be lazy and buy into it. This could be pretty bad depending on what kind of information these memes and fake pages are putting out there. I think this is definitely a big problem that is getting worse and worse that nobody is really realizing that could potentially be even more harmful then it is now in the future. What do you think? The heavy influence social media has on our world views is very dangerous, and unhealthy. I completely agree, that this is an issue that should be discussed in class. Most young people do not watch the news frequently, but almost all of them are regularly on social media. The fact that false information can be spread on such a wide scale, is a scary thought, simply because social media reaches a large amount of people. This leaves the masses vulnerable to fake news which can cause a number of problems such as mass panic, or hysteria. This issue should be discussed further in class, with input from everyone, because we all use social media.

Society views

Why do we feel that it’s important for us to fit society views?  We act according to the status stature society has failed to completely explain.  Focusing on the outlook of our appearance we undermine the actually personality of people. Personally, I am very self-conscious of what I wear. I feel as if I wear the wrong type of clothing society won’t accept me for who I am. Personality is no longer a common trait. We are too focused on who has the biggest butt or the who has the longest hair. Sometimes I am enraged with what society feel is important. We prance around in the most expensive clothing hoping to get a reaction from somebody or anybody. Most people get too cocky and become this illuminated conceited monster that craves attention from any and all things. Then what doesn’t help is the portray in social media. Females are supposed to be “thick” a flat stomach with a large chest and a big behind. The other part of society wants long hair, blue eyes and a size 0. For males they have to be 6 ft , nice smile , 12 pack and romantic. They want males to be living hallmark cards. Social media has a very big part to play in this we mimic what we see on social media. Almost all of us has shared a picture or meme on Facebook. We share these models or as we call them “beautiful people” and say “oh I wish I looked like that “ or “ Can’t wait to look that”. We should we feel threaten to enjoy the skin we are in. Why does society have this gravitational pull that we fail to realize is affecting our growth to better ourselves. Society has implemented a damsel in distress call for us. Because we’re so wrapped up in our appearance and what society feels like we should, people generally overlook the discoloration of society’s Wim. So we frantically find ourselves in imaginative realties and are pushed over the edges of tomorrow. I guess the biggest question comes in play , why do we instantly follow society and its many flaws to create our own lifestyles?

I agree 100 percent that this should be discussed in class. It is a very important topic that affects everyone. In fact we went over this topic in class last Wednesday! The way society in general has these unrealistic, and unhealthy standards for everyone is disgusting. Everyone should be able to dress, and look they way they want without having to feel, that they do not fit in. Society puts too much importance on materialistic things, and the way people look; these things do not have any real significance in our lives. This should be discussed in class because, almost everywhere in the world, there seems to be this mindset that you should conform to society’s standards, and if you do not, you’re labelled weird, or different etc. Individuality, and uniqueness should always be appreciated.

can love really be there?

A topic that it important to me that we should talk about that we haven’t talked about this semester is love. How would a person truly know they are in love. Would god give you the signs? What are the signs? Could the signs be: -having deep conversations -going to sleep to eachothers voice -telling secrets to eachother -telling other people’s secrets to eachother -sharing pictures of eachother on social media -making slide shows for couple goals -going to the movies -arguing and making up -telling childhood memories with eachother -Holding hands in public -showing eachother off -not acting shy Is that enough? Is that what love is?

This topic is important to me because a person can go years thinking the person they are with loves them because of the things they do together. But deep down the other could possibly not feel the same way. The love might not be on the same level. What if the other is trying to figure out a way to say “i want to see other people” was the love ever there then?

If a person loves you isn’t he or she supposed to stay with you because you can only have that type of love for one person. Type of love? How many types are they? Could they be: -the Love for your personality -the love for your money -the love for they way you Lust -the love for your faithfulness -the love for your honesty We need to educate our selves on this so we dont be fooled or tricked! By being suckered into that faze that we thought was gonna be forever!

People shouldn’t cause such heart break, such stress. The stress of thinking the love was real.

It shouldn’t break you though, it should help build you and teach you. It should teach that you do not NEED a man or woman. You should be able to strive alone, and do bad all by your self!

But should you hold a barrier up? Not letting anyone in forever? No. You do not want to possibly block your true match out because you thought it was just another person trying to come in your life just to walk out. Do not block ck out the wrong person, you do want to give some one a chance some day. Its just the matter of, is the love real or not? How do you know? If i can not truly find out, then would i ever find out?

I think talking about the signs of love is important, but something that isn’t relevant to talk about in class. Although I do believe it is important because, many young people are enticed by the idea of love, but have no idea what it looks like, or what it means. Many young people end up feeling worse after getting out of a relationship that was not taken seriously by one or both participants. That is why I feel this is an important topic to think about. In Good Will Hunting, there is a scene where Robin Williams is telling Matt Damon, “ If asked you about love, you’d probably quote me a sonnet; but you’ve never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable”.  What he is trying to say is that people have an idea of love, they know what it sounds like, and they have even seen people in love, but unless they have experienced it , they will never truly know what love is.

Greed

When talking about world issues, most people will bring up: poverty, world hunger, national debt, governmental corruption etc. But hardly anyone ever brings up the corruption of Wall Street as an issue; that is until recently in the 2017 election, where candidate Bernie Sanders mentioned how he would regulate the financial sector, particularly Wall Street.  When people bring up the economic crash of 2008, do they really know what happened? Does the general public have an understanding of what led millions of Americans to lose their jobs, and homes? Not many do, and that is why financial corruption must be discussed more frequently in class; it has affected our lives dramatically, and most people don’t even know it.

Financial corruption is responsible for the suffering of many people. One example is the recession of 2008. The situation that occurred in 2008 was due to the crash of the housing market in America. There were many factors leading the 2008 financial crisis but the biggest one was CDOs. CDO (Collateralized Debt Obligations) are basically bundles of mortgages that banks sell to investors. These bundles are filled with tens of thousands of mortgages, which people pay off over time with interest. Investors buy these CDOs looking for long term profit over a period of time. Each CDO has a different rating, from the highest AAA, to the lowest B.

CDOs that are A’s or BBB, BB or B, have a high risk of not paying off, because the mortgages they are filled with are risky; this means the home owners are not paying their mortgages. The big banks such as Goldman Sachs, and Lehman Brothers were bribing the rating agencies to give them the ratings they wanted. They knew that if you could bundle many high risk mortgages with high quality mortgages, you could sell them as AAA’s. They were basically lying to the investors. When the housing market crashed in 2008, the widespread unemployment we witnessed was due to the recklessness of the Banks. Almost no one in the world predicted that the housing market would crash, and when it did, all of that money was gone. The amount of free reign the private sector is given is horrifying.  There are also many financial regulations that have to be put in place in order to prevent things like this from happening again. This is why we need to discuss financial corruption more often.

Overdose

In the Louisville area there was 52 calls in 32 hours about overdose on heroin. Heroin use is a problem within that area the Metro Emergency Services answered 695 overdose calls in January. Families are losing their husbands, daughters, sons, cousins and mothers because of this addiction to heroin. 

Overdose is the leading death in American homes. There was 52,404 overdose in 2015 and they were an accident. Teens within the ages of 12-25 years old that are using drugs are most likely to overdose because they want to reach the highest limit.

Even as a teenager I still dealt with people in my life that overdose and was in put in the hospital but did not die. The person was put in the hospital for 12 days and everyone was praying for him hoping he would get better. When he got better he would overdose and which would get everyone upset because they were tired of him acting like a child and wish he would act like a man get a real job and do something better with his life. 

It’s hard to deal with individuals with addiction because they never see the problem and do not understand why everyone around them are so upset. Many people give up on them because the would get tighter of their ways. 

When the person who is addicted gets there help everyone gets thankful and happy but still hope the person does not get back into their old ways.

The blog provided important details relating to drug addiction, but it did not successfully analyze the article where you got the information. You had significant information already included in your blog to develop the analyzation of logos, and pathos. You just have to analyze the text, and provide examples from the text. For example, you could have said the article uses logos efficiently by providing statistics on the death rate of overdoses in America, and then provided a quote from the article. The blog lacked the analyzation portion, but it did have a serious topic, that would’ve been great to analyze.

The article “Ain’t I A Woman?” By Sojourner Truth, the main focus is on women and men’s equality. She believes that women’s ability and/or rights should be no different from the men’s, and it isn’t quite reasonable that men think their more superior or think that they are needed when it comes to women. Sojourner Truth explains that she’s capable of doing what men do and gives a few examples. The examples that she gives helps her convince the audience that her perspective on women vs men are accurate. One example that she gives is “Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mudpuddles, or gives me any best place! And Ain’t I a woman?” This is essential because as previously before these sentences, she states how men says that women need help with these exact things and she has proven them wrong because she’s done it all by herself. [Ethos]. Reading more into the article you’ll find that she mentions religion. She states, “…he says women can’t have as much rights as men, ‘cause Christ wasn’t woman! Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him. If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone…” Now of course, for those who aren’t religious, this wouldn’t be considered evidence. It would be considered just a thought or something more into that area. But for those of us who are very religious and believes in this story, it’s considered evidence. This is evidence that’s women might just be on a higher level then men. [Logos]. The emotions that this article evokes from the audience are (possibly) anger and encouragement. I say anger because those who don’t believe in God might feel a way because it was used to prove a point in the article. Also, small minded and ignorant men might feel a way because they aren’t open minded to the idea of women being on the same or high level than them. The article evokes encouragement in women. It lets us know that we’re capable of doing ANYTHING men do. We don’t need men. For those that didn’t feel this way, the words written in this article could impact their life greatly. Maybe they belittled themselves because they felt as though men were superior and in order to do certain things they need a male figure. Reading this article might just give them a little encouragement and I think a little more strength within themselves prove to society, back then and even a little now, that women are indeed just as powerful as men. One thing that can be fixed is the first paragraph; you included an introduction, but merged it with the paragraph for ethos. I understand the message behind your article: social media personalities are promoting hate speech, but because of their mass following and popularity, no one takes any of them serious. Your blog touches on a very real problem we have in the United States, but more context is needed to develop the text. I was able to make sense of your blog because I am familiar with YouTube, and PewDiePie. But you have to take the audience into consideration; introduce them to these social media personalities, and provide examples of how they promote hate speech. The blog also mentioned how corporations are providing platforms to spread their message; again provide examples of they are doing this. The ending of the blog was also a tad bit ambiguous: “This is about understanding what lies beneath this dark side of the internet, and how to stop it”. What preventive measures would you take, to stop hate speech on the internet? Adding a solution to the problem helps develop the text more, in that it presents a problem, and progresses into a solution.
