Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

"That’s… certainly a good point," she mused, thinking of her own occasional intolerance of people. It was certainly luck of a sort that he hadn’t snapped, or maybe it was just his laid-back nature.

Whatever it was, he seemed to genuinely like his sister, at least judging by the look on his face, but she suspected that he was taking a well-needed break from the “family bonding” time that took place every day.

She adjusted the umbrella slightly to account for a slight drip veering off the edge and down her leg, water sneaking its way down her boot before she could get her next words out.

"What’s the worst thing she’s ever done to you? There must be a multitude of stories just from the shared room alone."

Oh boy.

In the twelve whole years they've been sharing a room the amount of cruel, almost unforgivable things Komaru has done to him were aplenty, most of which he could look back on and laugh, but others he'll probably have over his head until his dying days.

..ok some of them were forgivable..a lot of them, he figured.

"Well there was the time she took all of my underwear and dyed it pink--but that was because she was still learning how to use the washing machine..well I think so anyway, but that wasn't really bad."

Back when he was in middle school and when he took gym, the other boys made quite the fuss about him showing up in bright pink boxers, it was a little irritating but it didn't bother him as much as the whole ahoge thing that showed up a year later.

"Or maybe when she took my hoodie to school and it got ripped up by the neighbor's dog down our street--but that was an accident, she didn't mean anything about that," he mused. It only took about a couple of days to get it all washed up and stitched back together, it was like nothing ever happened to it.

Oh..right.

"Ah..well, Komaru in the seventh grade ..took a picture of my..backside and sent it to one of my friends--s-she must've thought I liked her or something! But we were just friends and...I guess it could've been worse, she didn't talk to me for an entire week."

Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

"She sounds like a classic little sister, then," Kirigiri smiled. "Especially when you’re living in such close proximity to her."

Kirigiri paused to consider for a moment, then continued, “That would also partially explain your enthusiasm to be here, wouldn’t it?” Naegi always seemed to her to be excited about something going on around campus, sometimes a little too much so, but, as she seemed to think quite frequently as of late, it wasn’t an unattractive feature on him.

"It’s likely that you formed a bond with her, though, isn’t it? It may not have been nice at the time or even now, but it could yield good results in the future."

Either that or permanent emotional scarring.

He rubbed the back of his neck..was it that obvious? Geez..

"Ahah..I guess I do get a little excited sometimes--but you would be too, wouldn't you? Having to share a room with someone for years and finally having a bit of privacy for once." They've basically grown up together in that room, it was getting a little ridiculous by the time Naegi was in his 8th year, Komaru in her 6th, but he tried not to complain, considering the place they were staying at wouldn't allow them to have separate rooms, not much of a point in making a huge deal, right?

And, again she was right..he and Komaru were pretty dang close, 'closer than most siblings' people would comment, but he never really thought much of it.

I mean, the amount of times Komaru had accidentally walked in on him or vice versa, you'd hope they had a decent relationship.

Naegi shrugged a little, and they continued. "I guess I sort of miss her, though..."

Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

As she listened to him speak about his parents and sister, Kirigiri almost smiled. His family seemed… charming, almost, perhaps even picturesque. Someone as good-natured as him certainly deserved that sort of life.

She would have been willing to hear more from him, but he seemed to be finished talking.

And now the conversation turned back to her.

"Well," she began, a little slower than normal, "I’m certainly the sort who prefers to be on my own, although for someone as extroverted as you, having a sister is probably more than healthy." She let out a small laugh, then continued, "Even if I had a sibling, if I were the same as I am now, then I, no doubt, would have completely ignored them in favor of doing my own thing."

"See, that's the thing--I'd like to be by myself ...sometimes, at least, but since I'm the oldest I gotta watch out for her."

"She's a handful--a-and she's only just a couple years younger than me, but it would be pretty great if I could go a day without finding all of my stuff in her bag or having to clean up after her after I already did the chores for the day, y'know?"

He rubbed his neck and sighed a bit, he and Komaru had a pretty close relationship as far as siblings would go but it wasn't like they never fought or anything. Even people like him needed a bit of space every once in a while and his sister didn't allow that much at all. But..he probably got on her nerves as much as she did to him.

"..but I see what you mean, she keeps me busy..e-especially since I have to share a room with her back home. If I could change one thing it'd be that."

Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

The pair walked in silence for several moments, although the world around them was hardly quiet: the rain created a soothing white noise in the background. Kirigiri was certainly content this way, but from past experiences, she knew it wouldn’t be long until the boy spoke up.

She couldn’t follow his train of thought in any way, so perhaps it was simply the first thing he could think of. “Siblings?”

"No, not that I’m aware of. If I had, my personality… would be quite different, no doubt." She couldn’t imagine herself looking after a younger sibling or depending on an older one, though at a younger age, the clay that formed her being had been much softer, and like she had said, she would have taken better to that sort of situation.

And at this moment in time, perhaps she and Naegi would be engaging in different activities, with less tension and more familiarity. Or perhaps she would even be spending time with another classmate, or even a group.

She shook her head to clear her thoughts; Kirigiri had a bad habit of, every once in a while, getting lost in thoughts of what may have happened if just one variable in her childhood had been manipulated.

"That’s unrelated, however. Unless I’m wrong, you seem to have a nice family. …What are they like?"

Naegi thought for a moment..he had a pretty decent family, a normal life. Probably nothing comparable to Kirigiri's, honestly. He, his parents and his younger sister lived in an average-sized house with average income, went to an average school across town from where he stayed..

"It's..nice, I like my family. We aren't exactly close with everyone like my aunts and cousins, but my parents and the rest of us in the house have a great relationship."

"My mom works at a pharmacy and my dad works in some large building downtown in an office," he began, "And I have a younger sister, Komaru and she does orchestra..obviously ! N-not good enough to get into this school, obviously, but she plays the viola.."

He thought over it for a moment..was there much to say about his family, really ? 

"It must be..really great being the only child, though."

♒ Break || Leon & Naegi

Leon fiddled absently with one of the handles on his side, taking care not to move it too much. “Well I won’t say he ain’t gonna yell at ya. He yells at me every time he sees me for somethin’ or other, but he’s the guy t’ see if ya got a school related problem.” Ishimaru gave him detention a lot. It was usually about something stupid like his hair or his beard or his eyeliner (which was bullshit because the girls could wear as much eyeliner as they wanted and he never yelled at them), but sometimes it was because of something legitimate. At which point he would still complain, but that wasn’t the point.

Leon pulled a quarter out of his pocket when Naegi had finished setting up the game, poising it on his fingers to be tossed. “Heads or tails?”

"Um, tails? I guess." Naegi replied, going to the other side of the table.

"I guess I'll go see him, I just have a couple of problems going on in a few of my core classes--but..I'll brace myself if he does fuss at me. " if Leon of all people was recommending him, Ishimaru must be really good at picking people up and motivating them.

He made a note to not wear his hoodie when he went to see him.

Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

Kirigiri moved the handle of the umbrella to her other hand and popped her collar up as what she hoped would be extra protection against the storm. She stole a peek at Naegi; he seemed to be overwhelmingly excited, and if she was honest with herself, she was looking forward to this little excursion, too.

She checked to make sure the umbrella was covering them both before she stepped out any further. Smiling lightly at his comment, she offered an elbow.

"This should make it easier to stay under the umbrella if it turns out that one of us walks faster than the other," she reasoned, taking the first few steps out into the storm.

"And like I said before, I wasn’t doing anything in my room, so it’s certainly welcome to go out with anyone…" Especially someone who gave off such a sincere aura.

This gave him the final reassurance that he wasn't bothering her, at least. 

He took her elbow, linking arm in arm with her, and began to walk in step with the detective. He took one last glance behind him before he began to reply to her--shoot.

Shoooooooot.

Conversation, right? Come on, Naegi, you've gotten this far. 

He thought for a moment and looked in front of him for inspiration..the rain not providing too much. He laughed a little to himself, the last time there was this heavy of rain was back when he was in middle school, walking home with his younger sister. He and Komaru didn't have an umbrella so they were pretty much forced to bolt about ten blocks in order to reach home and on the way a man drove past them through a puddle, drenching them both.

They... both caught the flu and were sick for nearly a week.

"..hah, Kirigiri-san, do you have a brother or sister?"

Perfect.

♒ Break || Leon & Naegi

“Cool.” Leon crossed the room to stand opposite Naegi on the other side of the foosball table. Truth be told he didn’t remember all the rules, but he knew the basics, which was all he needed as far as he was concerned.

“If you need yer study mojo or whatever back for some test or somethin’ ya might wanna talk t’ Ishimaru. He could probably help ya.” He suggested casually; this was what he did in case of finals and bigger tests when it actually mattered. (Failing was so not punk rock.)

"Ishimaru, huh?" Naegi looked up at him as he set up the game, the sliders on each side clicking as he reset them.

"I've talked to Ishimaru maybe once..well..it wasn't really a conversation. He um.." Naegi pointed to his hoodie that was currently over his uniform, "Gave me a detention for wearing this--b-but it was outside of school, y'know? I didn't think it'd be a huge deal!"

He didn't really like parting with his jacket all too much, but the hall monitor gave him an earful that day for wearing it, saying how he looked like a bit of a slacker and how disrespectful it was..yeah, he sounded like the kind of guy who would put your rear into gear when it came to school.

"I do need a bit of a pep-talk, I might go to him !..I just hope he doesn't yell at me again."

Things to remember:

When no one is validating you, you can validate yourself

When no one is comforting you, you can comfort yourself

When no one is kind to you, you can be kind to yourself

When no one believes you, you can believe yourself

You can give yourself the things that you are looking for externally. You are allowed to be good to yourself.

“Nah I don’t have to study today.” Leon lied. He was almost certain if Naegi knew he needed to be studying, he’d nag him about it to no end, and he did not want to deal with that at the moment. (Or any moment really.)

“You know how to play?” He asked, gesturing to the foosball table behind Naegi. He wasn’t great, but it would be a way to pass the time.

"Yeah, actually! I haven't seen one of these in forever--" he scratched the top of his head, "..but I think I remember?"

A little. Hopefully.

He and his friends used to play almost all of the time at the tots camp he went to with the counselors and back then there were two boys on each side. Going against each other wouldn't be so bad, he thought. It wouldn't be as intense, and if they got bored they could always go for one of the video games in the corner, right?

"You're really lucky you don't have to study today, Kuwata-kun.." He went on the other side of the foosball table, finding the small ball in one of the holes in a compartment. "I should be right now, but I can't focus for anything."

Quiet Sunday || Naegi & Kirigiri

"Of course. There’s no trouble at all, Naegi-kun." She tucked the umbrella under her arm and exited the warehouse, nodding her thanks to the boy and waiting for him to catch up to her.

As they approached the doors, under the clack of her heels and the slap of his sneakers she could begin to discern the sound and scent of rain, and when she opened the door—

It was positively pouring outside. Kirigiri pushed the umbrella out in front of her, opening it and stepping out under its shelter before looking back to her companion.

"Are you going to join me on this lovely afternoon?"

Naegi caught her comment a bit too late and laughed a little in response and at himself. The outside was dreary and the rainfall was a lot heavier than he anticipated... it looked like they would be the only ones crazy enough to even want to walk in this mess. Everyone else he assumed must be inside one of the few shops on campus or scattered about in the North Wing.

Nevertheless, being able to share it with the detective underneath the musty old umbrella seemed to make up for it.

The boy smiled warmly and without any hesitation joined her at her side.

"Of course--no turning back at this point, is there?" He looked up to her with bright green eyes before tugging the hat of his hoodie over his head, "..heh, only if the weather decided to be a little forgiving..but--" he shoved his hands into his pockets, glancing down for a moment, "T-thanks for agreeing to go out with me, Kirigiri-san."

He concluded that they might actually end up following the other students' leads and find a place dry to sit down. But for now..

“Hm, nothin’ really. Just bored, figured I’d take a walk or somethin’. What’re you doin’ down here; ya don’t usually hang ‘round this part ‘a th’ school.” Leon answered, leaning against the door frame. He didn’t really know exactly where in the school they were, but he knew the general area well enough to know Naegi wasn’t there often.

"I usually don't, I never have to come all the way down here for anything, but..hey, change isn't a bad thing."

Then again, the last time he took an unusual route it led him to being held hostage..he began to take his statement back, but decided against it.

"I have no where else to go, actually." Naegi sighed, shrugging a little, "Everyone else seems to be studying right now and I..I can't be bothered so I decided to walk around a bit too. Someone--I think a 12th year, pointed me this way." 

"..you don't have any studying to do or are you just avoiding it?"
