Today is a new day. Yesterday has come and gone and tomorrow has yet to begin. Stay focused on the here and now instead of the past or present. You can’t change what has happened and you don’t know what the future holds but you do have control over the here and now.
Today, with a time of 2:26:53, Shalane Flanagan won her first major marathon and became the first American woman to win the NYC Marathon since 1977. Her facial expression says it all. I watched the race on my phone at work this morning, and may or may not have been cheering and crying while I did so. I am so, so proud of her and happy for her. What an incredible race!
“Sometimes we don’t realize the moment when we feel like dreams are taken away that actually there’s some delayed gratification down the road. I think it was a blessing that I got injured this past winter and I came here full of energy and motivation and desire to put on the best performance of my life.” - Shalane after the race

Healing is everyday work. Do not expect yourself to be okay overnight. Let yourself heal gradually and over time.
Your best weight is whatever weight you reach when you’re living the healthiest life you actually enjoy.

look, tomorrow you will wake up and feel a bit better, a bit calmer. you are going to figure things out eventually, it dosnt have to all be done tonight. take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and get some rest. you will manage.
She liked to tell them that running huge miles in the mountains was ‘very romantic.‘ Gotcha. Grueling, grimy, muddy, bloody, lonely trail-running equals moonlight and champagne. But yeah, Ann insisted, running was romantic; and no, of course her friends didn’t get it because they’d never broken through. For them, running was a miserable two miles motivated solely by size 6 jeans: get on the scale, get depressed, get your headphones on, and get it over with. But you can’t muscle through a five-hour run that way; you have to relax into it, like easing your body into a hot bath, until it no longer resists the shock and begins to enjoy it. Relax enough, and your body becomes so familiar with the cradle-rocking rhythm that you almost forget you’re moving. And once you break through that soft, half-levitating flow, that’s when the moonlight and champagne show up.

for everyone that’s ever asked me how to enjoy running: all you have to do is break through

Gaining weight does not make you a worse person, and losing weight doesn’t make you a better one. Your weight is not a reflection of your worth.
Eat intuitively and without shame. Eating without shame is one of the most radical things you can do.

understanding yourself is power.
loving yourself is freedom.
Forgiving yourself is peace
I was going to run only 8 miles, but ya know… oops.
I didn’t check the weather this morning and BRR. It was 41 degrees and I was frozen in my just my tank and shorts for a while and even by the end I had barely broken a sweat. Hey Chicago, if you could change your weather forecast to be a bit more like this, that’d be great. Thanks.
Kind of sad that this was my last Saturday morning group run of the training cycle. We’ll start back up together in the winter, though, for BOSTON and other marathons. It’ll be ~lit~, as the kids say. ;)
193 miles for September and 8 days to go!
