11/27/22 Build notes - Petticoat
working on the petticoat.
i’ve done about 6 tests on my scrap petticoat tulle to make sure i can gather it correctly. i’ve tested with my ruffler foot & gathering foot, using various stitch lengths and tension settings on the latter to try and get the right ruffle ratio.
i’ve also tested using a ribbon in various ways. i think i’m settling on using the gathering foot without a ribbon, using high tension & a long stitch length. that’s giving me the results i like best
okay i’ve gathered the first tulle layer and i’m realizing this doesn’t have nearly enough volume for what i want.
i have a limited amount of stiff tulle & a LOT of soft tulle. i planned on making one petticoat w the stiff tulle alone & making a second one w/ soft tulle if i feel the need, but i’m going to put soft tulle in the first one too.
i’ll triple up the layers - so two layers of soft tulle on top of one layer of stiff tulle. the stiffness will be on the bottom to provide support, and the soft tulle on top will soften out the texture underneath the skirt.
alright. i’m doing (petticoat circumference x 3) yds of the stiff tulle, with twice as much soft tulle on top. gathering the softer tulle twice as much gave me the volume i’m looking for. i’m securing the gathers w/ ribbon straight stitched through all the layers.
