What’s your favourite thing about the holidays?
"Nothing. They’re awful. Well, I guess seeing Teagan wasn’t so bad...”
They didn’t fight. It was a bit more, um, intimate than that.
“Seriously? Ugh. I go to school with a bunch of animals.”
@regulus-tujorspur @luscious-lucius
Did you hear about Regulus and Lucius
“What about them? Did they get in another fight? Sloppy bastards…”
Your betrothed seemed pretty cozy with a mudblood earlier this week...
“Fantastic. Wait… Am I supposed to care what she does in her personal time?”
Your sister would make a better heir than you.
“More than likely. She’s welcome to the title any time she wants, as long as I still receive my share inheritance money. Unfortunately she’s too smart to take it, and besides she doesn’t keep the name any way does she.”

There was an odd sort of deja vu to this exchange. Hadn’t they been here before? Hadn’t Severus used Andromeda as an excuse to avoid K and hadn’t they finally, finally gotten past that? He felt wrong footed- a sharp feeling of collapse somewhere in his midsection.
Anger came readily enough, but there was also a rising panic. Wondering if he’d finally done or said something that wasn’t careful enough and sent his friend into a frantic retreat. Impossible. Unacceptable. Severus would never ask for anything more than their friendship- he valued it too highly for that. Surely K would understand that much at least.
“Different. Right. Who needs friends when you’ve got a betrothed?” He asked carefully, trying to keep his tone mild. His brow was furrowed and his thoughts were running fast, trying to puzzle out K’s behavior. But this was hardly the place to start shouting. Not at all the right setting to demand why certain half bloods were suddenly not suitable company to be seen with.
That was the problem with having sharp friends like Severus, his best friend knew which jabs hurt most. This was exactly what had fucked things up with them the first time, the fact that he had to prioritize Andromeda, had to prioritize this engagement when it was the last thing he wanted to be doing. If they wouldn’t be here in these stifling dress clothes with his family’s friends and colleagues. They would be back at school together, reading, working on a new project or... Well, he couldn’t really entertain those thoughts at the moment.
“No it’s not that... My father--” It occurred to him that there might actually be a plausible explanation for why he had to avoid Sev for the moment that didn’t involve going past surface level.Still could pretty easily give his father the majority of the blame for it instead of himself and his own heart, “My father has been on the war path. Doesn’t want me spending time with... Non pure bloods,” It didn’t feel good to say, but it still had to be better than the alternative.
Looking around the room again to make sure no one was paying too much attention to them, he continued, still not meeting Sev’s eye, “I just--When we’re in this crowd I’ve got to look like I’m listening to him, yeah? I’m sorry. Promise I’ll make it up to you when we’re back at school, okay?”

For a second, there, she’d almost thought Kieren was going to touch, something that would not have been entirely unwelcome. But his hand dropped, and she supposed that maybe he’d lost his nerve, and decided immediately to let it go. “Thanks, K,” she said, giving him a smile. “Teagan helped me pick it out.”
As soon as possible wasn’t soon enough for her, though. “Have you had a tour of the house, yet, Kieren?” she asked suddenly, wondering if she could buy them some time away from the party and the mingling. “Or perhaps you’d like to see the back garden? Get some fresh air?”
“Well, I hate to say it but Teagan might actually have decent taste,” Kieren said. For the moment touching was still beyond him but he could at least he could put on charm well enough.
“No I can’t say that I have,” That surely would get both of them away from the crowd in the room, “Garden sounds better. I’ve got some cigarettes as well,” If he was stressed at this point he couldn’t imagine how having this party at her house was weighing on her.
Sum my muse up as a news article title
Example: “Local man gets what he deserves”, “Local man fucks everything up.”, etc etc. Bonus points if you make the mun laugh.

Coming to a full stop, Severus might have visibly flinched if he hadn’t been too taken aback to react at all. His face went automatically blank and he stood in baffled silence for a long moment. Important things to attend to? What the hell did that mean? Apart from a brush off- that much was quite obvious. Apparently he had not been entirely imagining K using the crowd as a buffer between them.
“I can imagine.” He returned, voice low with a false disinterest. “It’s funny. You didn’t seem particularly interested in your obligations when you wrote me for draught of living death less than a week ago.”
Severus’s twitched forward, an aborted attempt to grab K by the arm before thinking better of it.Instead, he crossed his arms across his chest. He was intent on making sure Kieren was okay and, if not exactly thriving, at least not in truly dire straights, but he wasn’t sure how he was going to manage that if his friend was planning on fleeing. Maybe you should grab him after all, Sev thought ruefully.
Fuck. Fuck he was fucking everything up so badly why did Sev have to come to this stupid bloody party any way. Couldn’t he have just stayed in the castle, it had to be lonely but at least he would be safe there. The idea of facing up against his father, and possibly others (Cygnus and Druella surely wouldn’t like the fact that their new son in law was more interested in his best friend than their daughter) was far more than he could handle. Against fellow students he was fine, but facing down their families much less so.
He wouldn’t have to look at Kieren like that if he were at Hogwarts too.
But how could he tell Severus that he had to leave, that they couldn’t be seen together without explaining, “That was--It’s different now. I’ve got--”
Severus stepped forward and Kieren drew in on himself slightly, looking nervously over his friend’s shoulder. He couldn’t see his father immediately but that didn’t mean he wasn’t watching. How much time did he have left before this stopped being a passing interaction and became suspicious.
“I should find Andromeda.”
Christmas Eve // Lucius & Open
luscious-lucius:
There was something off about Kieren’s tone. It was enough for Lucius to chance a glance over him, blue eyes roaming his friend’s form in search of any abnormalities. Not immediately spotting anything brought a wave of relief over him. He absentmindedly rubbed at the cut on his cheek, managing to silence a wince when he hit the spot that got aggravated the night before.
“I tried that,” Lucius grimaced. “And was stuck listening to two of them go off about who’s department was best.” He gave Kieren another once over. “Forgive me for having used you as my exit, but father—“ There was a pause where Lucius shifted so his back was to his parents. “He doesn’t want me interacting with any of the Black sisters unless he or Cygnus is nearby. Apparently I’m a bad influence.” He refrained from rolling his eyes and took a steadying breath. “I regret not taking Rod’s offer to give a cigar a try before this started.”
“Of course they did. Only at the fucking Ministry,” Kieren rolled his eyes. He shouldn’t be surprised how pointless and petty everyone was. Even the ones who weren’t in the Sacred 28, still all the same political shit. Part of him was honestly interested in it, but he would rather do it on his own, make his own path not be forced through all these events.
Kieren frowned, looking Lucius over, “Why wouldn’t he want you to interact with them?” His father had urged him to spend more time with Andromeda, why would Abraxas not want Lucius and Narcissa to bond or whatever. Did that have anything to do with the cut on his face, “We can go look for him if you want. Never too late to try.”

regulus-tujorspur:
“Not an option. I’m not drunk enough to get through this party as it is.” Which, there wasn’t really a level of drunk that would make this okay. But this was better, a lot better than last night when he’d found out some stupid girl with a gossip column was about to end his entire life. “I’m already going to get cursed and disowned, so what does it matter if my life ends today or the day after we get back from break?”
“I think you’ve had plenty, Regulus,” Kieren said, irritated. This sort of behavior was why he hadn’t permitted himself a drink tonight, getting sloppily out of control like this was the last thing he needed. That and dealing with Regulus who was far past that point. The next part worried him, why would Regulus be disowned as well, wouldn’t have expected it out of his parents given that he really was their only shot, “Why is it already going to happen to you?”
regulus-tujorspur:
Regulus took another sip of wine, looking somewhat dejected but backing off. “I just said you have pretty eyes. Because that’s true. Bros can say that, right?” Bros could say that probably. Reg didn’t know, bros were weird. He didn’t understand why Kieren was freaking out so much, it wasn’t like anyone was actually paying attention to him.
“So what you’re saying is you’d rather go upstairs to talk?” That had to be it. Except there wasn’t wine upstairs, that was a problem.
“What I want is for you to sober up and remember where you are before you get both of us cursed and disowned,” Kieren snapped. Regulus was probably drunk enough that he wouldn’t catch the unintentional implication of lumping them together, right? It wasn’t terribly obvious. And still Kieren was well aware of exactly how easy it would be to replace him. The other night at Greengrass’ he hadn’t exactly missed the his father paid entirely more attention than was warranted on their eldest daughter. Secretary at the Ministry was not that fascinating of a career path.
aprinceinpieces:
All told the party was a pleasant enough distraction. Only a few guests had bothered to shoot suspicious glares at him, and Severus had long ago stopped letting hateful glances disturb him much. Narcissa and her sartorial knowledge had given him the tools he needed to blend in tolerably well, and he could almost have enjoyed himself. Almost.
Worries for them aside it had been a relief to be in the company of his House mates and friends again. He’d been looking forward to it for days and Severus had without even thinking about it begun to look for Kieren the moment he arrived. Why shouldn’t he? His letter had said he’d be there, and it seemed perfectly natural to Severus to want the company of his best friends his … surprisingly evasive best friend.
Severus had crossed the room more than once after catching a glance of K, only to loose sight of him in the crowed. Now he’d finally found him, and the look on his face when he realized Severus was nearly upon him was difficult to categorize but not what Severus had expected at all.
“Busy?” Severus asked, an expression of obvious confusion on his face.
In the wave of everything that had happened Kieren very nearly forgot Sev was planning on attending the Malfoy party. However as soon as he saw the familiar form of his best friend entering the room it all came rushing back. The anxiety and dread hit him like a bludger and he had to fight down the overwhelming nausea that accompanied them.
Needing to avoid Severus again hurt. It really did. For other social gatherings the presence of his best friend would have been a comfort, giving him at least someone to talk to. But here, with his father able to watch his every move, within cursing reach of Sev he couldn’t risk seeming too close.
The Malfoy house was big, but not big enough for Kieren to avoid Sev all night and eventually he found himself cornered. For several seconds he wasn’t really sure what to say, what he could say safely here.
“Sev,” He should explain all of it, tell his best friend so at least he could take precautions to defend himself but then... Then he would absolutely lose him. But that was better than him getting hurt wasn’t it? Fuck what was he supposed to do, “I--Yes. I have important things I have to attend to at these parties.”
regulus-tujorspur:
Regulus pouted when K pushed him away, moving closer. “I have a hold of myself.” Definitely. Completely. He had the best hold of himself, definitely wasn’t slurring his words at all. “But you could have a hold of me too. Because I’m prettier than anyone else here, even if my eyes are boring. You should look at me, not them.”
Kieren took another step back, holding his hand out to fend off Reg trying to touch him again, “What the hell are you doing?” He hissed with another nervous scan of the room. At this point they were being quiet enough that no one seemed to have noticed, but there were only so many risks he could take. Regulus was definitely not one of them. Never at any point had he wanted that, but especially not now.
“You’re going to blow this entire--What if your mother sees?” Never mind his own father.
regulus-tujorspur:
“Bro, you have pretty eyes.” Regulus felt that it was urgently important for the person he was speaking to to understand that, putting one hand on their shoulder and nearly spilling the glass of wine that was in his other hand. “Like, so pretty. So so pretty. I want pretty eyes. Mine are so boring. But yours aren’t, because they’re pretty.”
Merlin he was way too sober to be dealing with Regulus right now. While ordinarily he would have much rather been as out of his tree as Reg was at the moment alcohol had done him no favors last night. And it certainly wasn’t doing any for his friend either.
“Get ahold of yourself, Jesus, Black,” Kieren shrugged off his hand, glancing over her shoulder to see if he could spot his father immediately in the crowd. If he had figured K out who’s to say he didn’t know about Regulus too.
