The first image shows flowers and a small basketball left in memory of Dave Sanders on the ten-year anniversary of the Columbine Massacre. Dave Sanders was a coach and a teacher at Columbine High School. On that fateful day of 20 April, 1999, he successfully evacuated an abundance of students from the cafeteria as the violence erupted around them. He encountered Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in the hallway as he was attempting to secure the school and help as many students as possible. He turned to run away when Harris shot him three times. Miraculously, he managed to get himself to the science lab. Students placed a sign in the window which read “1 bleeding to death” so that police and medical personnel know of his whereabouts. They claimed they were on their way but sadly never came; Sanders tragically, and slowly, bled to death inside the science lab. During his funeral, his daughter said: “What you did in that school on Tuesday was an amazing act of heroism. Even after you were hurt, you continued to be the brave, selfless man we all know you are.”
