Henry didn’t know what to think anymore. He wanted to believe his mother would never do that to his dad, but he’d wanted to believe they were made for each other too. And that Kingdom would never fall. And all kinds of things that had come crashing down around him lately. 

“I don’t know that.” He admits, still not able to meet her eyes. “When - when we were at Daryl’s camp I - I saw the way you looked at him, and you never looked at dad like that.” He hadn’t wanted to admit it at the time, but it had given him pause even then. His hand twitches, knocking the book in his lap to the floor with a dull thud!. He bends down hesitantly, trying to pick up the book without jerking into the coffee table. It’s a convenient excuse to get a moment to gather his thoughts. 

Henry had always known Daryl was her best friend. She’d been saying that for years whenever he asked about the strange man she’d go visit in the woods. He just never paid him much mind, until he was suddenly living in a house with him and Lydia, and everything was uncomfortable and awkward. He saw Daryl more then he saw his own father, and it was no secret that it got on Henry’s nerves more often then not. Lydia made things somewhat easier, she was someone to talk to, when she wasn’t in school at least. Sometimes they’d hole up in his room for hours and just sit in relative silence, thankful just to not be alone for a while.

“You left dad because of Daryl, and you really expect me to just - just live in a house with him? And just be fine with it?”

     it’s   not   going   to   be   an   easy   thing   to   say.      she   knows   her   boy   is   fragile,   but   he   deserves   the   TRUTH.      there   is   more   behind   the   split   from   his   father   than   either   party   had   him   believe.      while   a   big   contributor   was   her   feelings   of   failure   over   the   kingdom,   and   not   being   able   to   protect   her   son,   there   was   one   more   BIG   REASON   she   had   left   the   king.      and   with   his   already   SOUR   OPINION   of   daryl,   she   KNEW   it   was   going   to   cause   an   outburst.

     ❝   there   was   one   more   reason   that…      that   i   ended   things   with   your   father.      he   wanted   daryl   gone,   wanted   him   to   stay   away   from   me.      i   know   that   he   was   trying   to   have   good   intentions,   but   i   couldn’t   have   that   happen.      daryl   is   very   important   to   me,   henry.      we   go   back   ten   years.      he   was   the   one   who   helped   me   survive,   he   was   the   ONLY   one   who   almost   died   looking   for   my   first   child.      in   all   honesty,   he   is   my   soulmate.      i   just…      i   can’t   be   without   him   anymore.      those   five   years   were   hard.      i   know   it   hurts,   and   i   know   you   don’t   trust   daryl.      but   i’m   asking   that   you   please   just…      try   to   give   him   a   chance.      i   don’t   want   to   lose   either   of   you.      you   are   my   son,   and   i’d   always   choose   you.      but   please   don’t   MAKE   ME   choose   like   your   father   did.   ❞

The look on his mother’s face only serves to increase his anxiety. His leg jerks to one side, the anxiety always increases the symptoms. Siddiq kept saying it would get better but he was starting to doubt that. 

As she continues a dull throbbing picks up in his head. He knew Daryl was important to his mom. That’s why he did try to get along with him. It just wasn’t easy. Daryl got under his skin and he wasn’t even sure why - and then she kept talking and he was. Something in the back of his brain clicked as she talked about Daryl being her soulmate. 

The way she’d touched his hair at the camp. How they moved in sync. How they just seemed to know what the other would do. The way they’d looked at each other - hell it was probably the reason they were living here, in Daryl’s house now. 

His head is spinning and he feels nauseous. How long has this been going on? What this going on behind his dad’s back for years? Is that why his dad lived at Hilltop? 

Tears of anger swell in his eyes and he looks away from her. 

“Did you have an affair?” His voice is soft and shaky. “Did you have an affair while you were married to dad?”
