That day in the clan forests the solution had seemed so black and white; like chess. It wasn’t a fair trade, Shino for Torune, but he had to try. This way Shino could have a future, Lord Shibi could keep his family, and the uncontrollable nanobeetle user would become someone else’s problem. For some pieces to move on others had to be given away. This wasn’t just his own happiness,  Torune needed to think about what was best for everyone. Hopefully in a few years his adopted family would see that too and quietly forget him. 

But as he slipped deeper and deeper into Root’s shadows it wasn’t his memories, but rather Torune himself that began to blur. 

Seeking solace in the Code, he focused on his missions, studied protocol until he could repeat it even half-asleep, and filled in the remaining nooks and crannies of his schedule with training. Don’t think, just follow orders. 

Maybe that’s why, after months of seeing the same empty faces, or rather their masks, he was finally being permitted to patrol without Fuu. Despite the curt politeness Torune half expected to see an extra objective in his itinerary: ‘Prove you won’t run when given the opportunity’.

The unofficial test seemed confirmed the moment he locked eyes with his former guardian. Pangs of fear and happiness hit in equal measure. Lord Shibi. All wide scared eyes, he didn’t bother whispering, “Why are you here?” His mind immediately jumped to the worst possibility, had Lord Danzo kept his word? “How is Shino?”

The corners of Shibi’s mouth turned upwards. It was hard to see but there nonetheless. Of course Torune’s first concern would be Shino. Torune was possibly the most selfless person Shibi had ever met. He was only a child when he willingly gave up his freedom to keep Shino safe. And now that he was older it was plain to see the toll that decision took. Torune wasn’t himself anymore. Danzo had warped him for his purpose into more of a weapon than a human being. The thought filled Shibi’s heart with sadness.

“He’s doing well. He’s growing strong and seems to be happy. All of the clan is safe and happy. …I suppose we have you to thank for that.” There was no doubt in his mind that if Shibi had refused to give up either of the boys, things would have got very bad for the Aburame’s very quickly. Danzo was not the kind of man you could trifle with and escape.

“But a more important question is ‘how are you doing’? How do they treat you? Are you…are you happy?” Normally, Shibi wasn’t so open about emotions. But he knew that they didn’t have a lot of time. He might not ever see Torune again, he needed to make the most of this opportunity.
