hey guys!! i hope u are all dealing well as y’all have probably realized my activity on here has taken a hit. life is busy and i am just dealing w some Stuff that i need to so.. i will probably not be able to dedicate a lot of time to this blog.

eve’s eyes widened at the array of snacks (and empty wrappers) strewn across the table. “last i checked, criminals in holding for interviews don’t exactly have access to uber eats.” her tone was a sharp mix of sarcasm and annoyance, knowing that villanelle absolutely had the power to get food on command or to simply annoy one of the guards into getting it for her anyway. she gestured at the mess vaguely with her hand. “and whose budget exactly is covering all of this?”

“okay, mhmm.” she nodded, the curve of her lips belying the amusement she felt at villanelle’s semi-serious recitation pithy saying. of course villanelle believed this. it was the way she had operated for years after all, shedding skins and tongues as she traipsed across european national borders. “it’ll be fine —this mission’ll be in london. carolyn wants to keep an eye on us — on you.” eve cursed internally at the slip of her tongue. she didn’t need villanelle of all people knowing that her ass was on the line for this too, or who knew what kind of bullshit she would try to pull?

         she was going to keep her safe. they were going to move away to somewhere completely off the map – get a little cabin in alaska, and she would look after eve, and eve would look after her, and she’d spend the evenings stroking thin fingers through her hair and humming la marseillaise to herself until eve fell back asleep. but viIIanelle has spent the last few months shifting from city to city and bed to bed, but it’s never quite the same. there’s never any feeling.

                  “you stabbed me first, remember? now, we are even.”     after all, viIIanelle is a better shot than that, and if she’d wanted her dead, there’s a nice, thick mop of amazing hair to aim for and an even prettier brain underneath it to make a mess in the ruins with.

                            “did you miss me, eve?”

“irrational? me?” 

eve wouldn’t call rejecting a seasoned assassin’s offer to elope to alaska irrational exactly. if anything, it was the most rational choice she had made regarding villanelle. (ever.) and yet the way the familiar lilt of villanelle’s voice makes something catch just right inside her heart might just undo every step she took away from her.

“miss you? you gotta be kidding me.” she returns the other woman’s saccharine sweet question with an acerbic eyeroll of her own. “the only thing i missed was you keeping my blood pressure up.”

one investigator to another, she knew where chloe was coming from. knew that she wouldn’t be here asking eve for information without knowing that their cases were connected. and yet —

“i wish i could give you more, i really do.”

the deep sigh winds its way out of her almost reflexively. “yeah, but if you screw up this damn job that’s gonna change really quickly.” it’s both entertaining and infinitely frustrating to work this closely with the assassin, especially when there’s no real way to predict how she will act. jesus christ. "so don’t test me, villanelle.”

the words had slipped out between her lips quiet as a whisper before she realized what she’d said. and yet — and yet it rings truer than any other platitudes she has offered the blonde before. of course they’re going to hurt each other. haven’t they proven that multiple times over already? but flesh and bones would knit back together again. breaking her heart? that’s not something eve was confident she would be able to rebuild herself from.

but this was never meant to be good for them. anyone with eyes could see how much they had damaged each other already. it must be inevitable. predestined, somehow, that their lives would be so deeply entangled. why else would they keep falling back into this precarious dance?

eve can’t help but scoff at villanelle’s words, and a few curly locks fall out of place with a shake of her head. “i don’t know what you could do to me, villanelle.” the way her lips wrap around the name is unexpectedly tender, immediately betraying the longing she has tried to keep at bay. it doesn’t make sense for either of them to love each other. they are at once alike and polar opposites, and eve is almost frightened by the hunger she’s found within herself, a startling mirror to the spark in villanelle’s eyes. “i don’t think i can stand us hurting each other like this any more.”
