eve spends a great deal of her time not thinking about villanelle. 

she doesn’t think about what she’s doing or who she might be doing it with; not about what food she eats, or the clothes she wears, or places she goes and has gone; she doesn’t even think about killing her. almost killing her. point is: almost all of eve’s time is spent actively not thinking of villanelle. it requires a lot of mental energy and it works almost all of the time. except when she turns around in the middle of her kitchen and the one person she spends almost all of her time not thinking about is standing in the middle of her living room.

( her hair is still wet from a late bath. she’s holding a knife. )

she shot you.   she shot you and then she left you for dead.  it haunts you,  especially when you close your eyes.  you dream about her,  about the moments you shared   . . .   and how it all nearly killed you.  you didn’t think that you would ever see her again but here she is,  right in front of you,  the villanelle you’d become far too infatuated with.   “  it’s you.  “  it’s a stupid thing to say and you regret it as soon as it falls from your lips.  but you’ve been struggling lately.  struggling to smile,  struggling to dress  -  struggling to function like a normal human being.  you aren’t the same eve she once knew.  you’re a mere shadow of yourself and the black rings beneath your eyes are only a small fraction of proof.   “ i really  -   really  don’t think that you should be here. “   in your dingy apartment that lacks any sense of  homeliness.  it isn’t like your place with niko,  it’s  . . .  grim.   and you haven’t tidied it properly in days.  in weeks.   “ you have to leave.  “  your voice shakes,  you’re scared of her.  “  i don’t want to die,  villanelle.   just forget about me.   you have to forget about me.  “

        “Oh–I didn’t mean to imply…” Mary’s voice dies out. Did she imply? She doesn’t know where on earth the other woman got such an idea–that simply talking about the former principal Hawthorne was suggesting… She looks at her, brow furrowed. “I would hope not,” she gradually says, wondering if it’s only a joke, a joke she didn’t quite get.

your clothes shouldn’t look good on anybody - and yet they look good on her.  you try your hardest with the insults but you can’t stop thinking about how the colour of your scarf compliments the colour of her eyes.  “ i’m rude? “ you question,  trying your best to sound scolding.  but it’s hard around her because she makes you feel a way nobody has before.  it’s too confusing.  

“ you’re the one who broke into my house and started trying on all of my clothes. “  and now they’re going to smell of villanelle.  you like the thought of that -  it wants to force a smile across your lips but you refuse it because you’re not soft and you won’t allow this - criminal - to make you soft.  “ you’re rude. “ you’re like two bickering teenagers, waggling your finger,  accusing one another of being worse. but you’re both as bad as one another, aren’t you?  you’re two sides of the same coin.  

“ what do you want,  villanelle?  niko will be back soon. “ and you dread that.  you dread niko’s company lately because it’s not hers.  “ you know, i really have to tighten up my home security. “

     ‘ Sorry --- are you fucking kidding me? ’ Faith has never genuinely wanted to strangle someone before but she thinks that this is pretty close. This is far too casual, considering the last time they met. ‘ We are not friends. ’

       “I’m gonna need a really good reason not to shoot you within the next twenty seconds.”

         ❛  you  just  sorta   ------run  by  your  own  schedule,  huh ?  ❜      it’s her polite way of saying the other woman is  late,   and beth barely glances up to greet her.  it’s not as though she’d expected any different   ---   knows better by now,   but it’s probably a  good thing  she’s in a particularly pleasant  mood.  at the end of the day,  it’s  her money  that’s paying for this job,  after all.   of course,  she doesn’t say  any  of that out loud,  simply lifts a hand to gesture to the waiter so that her newly arrived company might order a drink.   in the   meantime,  beth sips at her own,  watching over the rim of her glass for the span of one heavy pause.   

finally,  the glass finds its home back on the surface of the table between them,  and she leans forward on her elbows,  chin resting in one palm.  she smiles,   sweetly,   as if prepared to launch into small talk.   but there's nothing small about this,   and she's   eager   to close a particularly   pesky   chapter of her storybook.
