So in recent news, it’s seems like the recast situation just got 100x worse….
I saw on @puffypuffers insta with screen caps from a Dollfie Dream FB group that Luo, one of the top recasters in China, is now in the process of filing for trademark of various BJD companies to own their trademark.
Which means that those companies he’s filing for to “own” were to sell in China, from Taobao to even doll shows, they could face legal actions and could never sell in China again. The list of companies that have been effected and having pending trademark is already extensive, companies that aren’t even in China such as Dollshe, Fairyland, Iplehouse, Soom, Lillycat, Marina Byockova, Peaks Woods, DOLK, Bambicrony, Cocoriang, and so much more, he’s also even added trademarks in the US for some companies as well. Luo has every intention of chasing out the “competition” of the companies themselves so he can sell freely with no repercussions.

With him doing this, he’s literally eliminating the companies that he recast from, so will probably be a point where you no longer be able buy originally cast of those companies doll, but you’re only be able to buy cheap resin copies because those companies will eventually shut down due to losing a part of the market they sell to
I don’t know how else more to say that the recast situation just gone past ignoring now, because this gone from bad to beyond worse.

So let me get this straight. Prorecasters act like popular BJD companies are huge companies with all the money in the world who don’t need support or more money. This Luo guy is clearly loaded enough to file for all these copyrights which is VERY expensive, is clearly ridiculously rich from counterfeit goods, but it’s ok to support him? Huh?! This guy is closer to be a ‘big corporation’ than any of the doll makers and companies! If you’re so against ‘big companies’ why are you supporting him?!

Mod: I’ve seen people say that the recasters have families to feed too, which is absolutely true. But to see Luo waste money like this makes me doubt he is paying his staff very much. Each US TM costs like $1000, he filed four US plus 50+ TMs in China. That money didn’t go to the workers but to corporate bods. At least buying legit means the money goes into the staff, artists and keeping the company alive. Not just wasted like this.

Luo is a well known recaster that has now gone on to file Trademarking for a long list of legitimate companies - ranging from huge, like Fairyland, to individual artists. If he succeeds, the companies will have to pay a fee to him to sell their products with their name and logo. Even if a company was going to change their name and logo, they would have to pay him a fee in order to sell any merchandise they are sitting on. This is going to make it hard and discouraging for companies to continue making dolls. If they choose to no longer make dolls, there will be no new sculpts, nor will you be able to buy a brand new doll. If there are no more new sculpts, there will be nothing new to recast either (for those who collect recasts). Because all dolls would then be limited edition, second hand prices can and will increase as well, with no real limit at to what. If no ones making dolls, the ones around can eventually deteriorate. Also, forget being able to buy replacement parts if something happens to break on your dolls. This could legitimately lead to the end of the hobby, not only making it so much smaller and harder and more expensive than it already is.

I have one recast. I’ve gone legit but I am keeping my recast to prevent or encourage others from buying recasts. I’m not going to go out of my way to be a jerk to anyone though. Pro artist, anti shithead.
