an eyebrow raised, he barely manages to suppress a laugh. no point in pressuring a ‘ saint ’ to take a cigarette. the pack’s returned to its previous place before he can bother to come up with a response that didn’t make him seem like an antagonist straight out of an anti smoking ad. he never cared much for the virtuous types. in his experience, the more righteous they were, the less fun it was to be around them. but he’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. polite enough to turn away from her when he exhales the ashen smoke, a smirk graces his features.

‘ bet your biology teacher will be glad to know you pay attention in class. for the record, though, lots of stuff will kill you. a smoke or two isn’t THAT bad in the grand scheme of things. ’

‘ yeah, well, no one else pays attention in that class, so -- someone has to, i guess, ’ she said, words accompanied by a smile & an awkward shuffling of feet. ‘ i can’t help feeling bad for him. the teacher, i mean. ’ she ought to leave, she supposes - best not to be tempted by what her mother & step-father have assured her is sin ( or, close enough, anyway ), but she is confident in her own resolve. she’s even become a bit cocky about it. ‘ i’ve never really understood the attraction, though. they can’t be THAT good ... good enough to risk that. ’ then again, dawn has a natural adoration for life & all things good -- she gave up eating sweets for a whole week when she was told too much of that would make her ill! that’s since been amended, but the principle sticks on ; life over temptation. it’s an obnoxious motto to live by, but live by it she SWEARS.

‘ um . . . ’ she bit down on her lip. hard. it felt rough under her teeth, and she thought for a moment she might bite right through it, but still she continued, feeling the strangest comfort in such subtle pain. the general atmosphere was awkward, so she figured she had to take solace in the LITTLE THINGS, things being, for example, the fact that her bottom lip, with the added pressure of her own bite, had finally ceased quivering. that’s a plus, huh! ‘ d’you know the name of this town, or, like -- state? or something? i kinda nodded off in the ride i hitched here. ’ the last bit is accompanied by a shameful little smile, for she feels kinda STUPID for trusting that some weird old trucker-dude would take her all the way to phoenix, but she guessed it was more than naiievety -- she didn’t really care where she went! town after town blurred into each other, and at the end of the day, all places seemed to be the same. at least, at their bitter cores.
