You know what I’m all about? Killjoy fables. Stories that killjoys tell each other around campfires at night, that Zones parents tell their kids before bed. Like the tale of how Dr. Death Defying earned his name by outwitting the Phoenix Witch. The story of Show Pony, who challenged the wind itself to a race and won. How Cherri made a deal with the Witch and that’s why he’s always collecting the masks for her. Stories of killjoys who died during the war, any truth they might have held warped into nigh-unrecognizability by countless retellings and embellishments. A hundred different versions of how the Four got their names. All somewhat ridiculous, all with some kind of moral, all just as much as part of killjoy culture as everything else. And who knows? Maybe there’s some truth to them after all.
