do you have any insight on chara? i really am interested in some of the headcanons/discussions youve presented about characters and chara is very important one to me so i was wondering if you have any thoughts on them :•)
took me a bit!! promise i wasn't ignoring the ask, i just needed to juggle my memory on the game for a bit, i also really enjoy chara as a character and what is shown with them, oftentimes indirectly....though there's a big chance a lot of these insights aren't that crazy and are most likely things already said by someone else...and i'm just going off from what i remember and know about them.....
like to me chara i think is a very obviously abused/neglected child, and it really feels like in a lot of ways they didn't get exactly taught about things like empathy or how people feel or especially their undersensitization towards death... i always think about how they are described to have Possibly underreacted towards accidentally poisoning asgore, and maybe that might've come from them later on using buttercups on themselves, but at the same time they don't seem to really grasp the weight about death, but interestingly wants others to feel the consequences of their actions as shown by them carrying their own corpse on the village, and that they never stated Why they hated humanity exactly, just that they Do... there is also the fact that inspite of all this, they are very clearly suicidal as well, even if death isn't necessarily something they have a full grasp on it is still something they end up wishing on themselves . that regardless of one's age, you will end up having these thoughts one way or another, especially if you've most likely been dehumanized growing up......if that make sense
then there is the part where they also don't seem to really have a grasp on emotions, or why people feel the things that they do - especially not understanding why asriel is as emotional as he is, i think if i remember, to where he had to feel like he had to justify himself for crying
though i disagree with the idea chara was a bad bully towards asriel :P they are a child, and they tend to be easily impressionable, so them saying about how 'big kids don't cry' towards him is most likely something they were raised around back at the surface most likely... like perhaps they were just never allowed to be very emotive and so at some point the concept of some of these things just don't register to them really....
but inspite of all that, and how they have their own struggles in understanding concepts of why people are the way they are, they also follow their own moral concepts and how they percieve things based on their own understanding of the world, which iirc is shown through if you go and make multiple no mercy routes, that they don't understand why you're so senseless and think that it's also quite perverse as well? though i might be wrong, and a lot of these thoughts could be very surface level i feel....
in terms of what they might've went through could heavily depend TBH, i think being heavily mistreated in anyway can make someone have a different perception on their surroundings no matter what, i feel like some incestuous abuse or SA might've happened to them because of the fact they struggle with a lot of concepts of what I Mentioned above, there is also the fact that they generally remind me of Lisa Armstrong SO much so i feel like my own views about that character can be applied to Chara as well IMO, like it feels like a lot of this could be caused because there's a non-zero chance Chara was just never allowed to have their own exact personhood growing up, and so that was just never taught to them, they just go from what they seem to consider moral, and i also find their relationship with Asriel really fascinating too that some of these things, they still did even if it meant ending up hurting their best friend sort of.....
again i don't think they were a bully towards Asriel, i think they were just very blunt with their feelings but they also DO things with a set goal in mind, which has always interested me about their character, like this is very clearly a kid with some aspd traits IMO, and it makes me feel sad thinking about how in a lot of aspects they were just never really allowed to have an understanding of things growing up, but they also aren't an evil person, and they just tried to do what they thought was most likely the right thing to do,
Again though i don't think this is a very crazy insight about them TBH, but Chara ends up being one of my favorites because of how these things about them are shown :') I especially like that even some of the people who tell you about them, especially Flowey/Asriel aren't the most reliable themselves, i think they are just a very good character Yes....i hope this made sense
