i’m not gonna say it’s all fun and games for irene’s attendants but it does have a certain flavour to it. like if i was one of ten people in the palace who knew that the king was sleeping in the queen’s chambers and i saw his oblivious attendants squabble over who gets to sleep on benches outside his empty room???? the rush must be unparalleled

idk at what point in the writing of king of attolia megan whalen turner was like. actually i should write almost the entire book from the pov of a guard that doesnt know what the fuck is going on, but it was the best point and im very grateful for it. literally unrivalled, hilarious, incredible. every single chapter costis is like. god i hate my stupid idiot king who doesnt like his wife and wants only to rule the country and can barely lift a sword and doesnt know whats going on ever and then the pov will shift for three paragraphs to someone who does know whats going on and theyre just like. Eugenides Is The Scariest And Most Capable Bitch Alive And Hes Up To Something. And He Loves His Wife.

one thing I love about gen and irene is that when gen adopts costis, irene very much goes okay that is going to be your dog, not my dog. I am not going to be doing one ounce of work for that dog. and then three years later she’s like I will personally die for costis’s right to make reckless and borderline suicidal decisions for the slimmest chance of being reunited with the love of his life. doth any here dare fail countenance mine word? and no one does <3
