Oh no. Oh no, oh no no, oh no no no no. She was crying?! What’s with the crying?! Is he supposed to be doing something about this?! HE DOESN’T KNOW ANYTHING WHAT TO DO WHAT TO DO? He held up his hands uneasily, his voice shaking a little “Uhh – hey, hey Kim, listen I don’t –” When she explained what happened with her date, he shut up quickly and stared at her with a surprised expression. Stood up? He scratched the back of his neck, confused and sort of embarrassed and feeling out of place.
Kim went on a lot of dates. Well, not a lot, but a normal amount for a pretty cheerleader who also saved the world in her spare time. Dash didn’t know what it was like to date Kim, obviously, but wasn’t it supposed to be like, super awesome? ‘Cause really, how many guys get to go out with a girl who knows how to dress well but can also defeat twenty thugs without blinking any eye? And she’s kind of a big deal? And he really doesn’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to go out with Kim Possible, let alone stand her up.
But. How could he say that in a way that is super platonic and doesn’t sound like something that came straight out of a Sandra Bullock romantic comedy (he knew because he had watched so many with already – lame) and feel like he wasn’t exposing himself completely? He couldn’t, and it was pretty embarrassing. He thought to himself for a quick second, mind racing as he watched his good friend sobbing across the table from him. He frowned, and after a split second, got up and walked to the other side of the table and knelt down.
“Okay, um, that sucks.” He winced, off to a rocky start. “But if you’re still up for some stuff, I might have an idea. And it’d be a much better date than eating at this stupid place.” And yeah, it was apparent to him that Kim looked way out of his league, even now. Especially because she was dressed so nicely and he, well, was an idiot kneeling in a restaurant wearing an old flannel over a Kick-Ass t-shirt and some faded jeans. “Sooo, what do ya say, Kim? Wanna try to rekindle with your ex-husband for one night only?” He smirked a little, despite feeling so nervous. He could feel his fingers tapping at super speed on the side of his leg and hoped Kim or anyone else didn’t notice. “Just for fun and stuff, you don’t have to but… I’m pretty sure it’d be a lot more fun than whatever your loser date had planned.” Dash grinned and stood up, offering his free hand out for her to grab. “Also, not trying to brag here, but I’m kind of a catch.” He raised his eyebrows and tilted his head, “How about it?”
Her life was basically over. She could see it now in her mind, playing again and again like the worst movie ever. Everyone would have heard about it in school by the time they went back, and there would be whispers behind her back in the hallways, in class, in the girl’s bathroom. Some of the girls would offer their sympathies, saying he was just a jerk anyway and she shouldn’t pay him any attention. Ron would be all confused until she caught him up, and then he’d tell her not to worry about it and invite her over to his house later, probably to watch he and Rufus play video games. No matter how hard she tried to avoid him, she’d inevitably run into Matt, who would act sorry and make an excuse or pretend he didn’t know her. She couldn’t tell which was worse. Ugh, and then after class would come cheer practice, with Bonnie making snide remarks the. Entire. Time.
And now, she was embarrassing herself even more with Dash sitting there. She wanted to tell him that it wasn’t like she was in love with her date or anything, it would just be nice to not feel so stupid around boys all the time. She was always saying the wrong thing, or doing the wrong thing, and then there was that hobby she had. She’d never stop saving the world for a boy, that’d just be dumb. But she was aware of how...weird it must make her seem. Always rushing off, and the gadgets she carried around, and the fact she knew sixteen different kinds of kung fu. All the time she tried to tell herself it wasn’t a big deal, but she always felt like she was missing something. So many of her friends had serious long term relationships, and Kim couldn’t even date a guy longer than like, a month. And oh god, now she was crying harder, and she was so lost in her own little world that she didn’t even realize Dash had knelt beside her until he started talking.
Her breath hitched as she reached for a napkin, wiping at her face as carefully as she could. She wanted to tell Dash that it was okay, he didn’t have to sit around listening to her cry all night (and really, at the rate she was going, it was going to be all night). But as he started to talk about his idea, she could feel her eyes widen. That was...unexpected somehow, although if she thought about it for half a second, it was totally something Dash would do. She chuckled as he referred to their marriage (being in love with Dash. Now that had been an interesting feeling) and rubbed at her eyes with the palm of her hand. She laughed again, and wow, in just a few minutes she could feel herself start to cheer up.
“That sounds...” Any other time she’d have a sort of snappy comeback; they were always being sarcastic or snarky with each other, but now all she could do was grin widely as she took his hand. “That sounds amazing. Let’s go.”
