Haruka: You’re such a rough driver that I’m too worried to fall asleep.

Rin: Heh, speak for yourself.

Haruka: Beside…

Rin: Huh?

Haruka: This is the only time we can talk properly.

Rin: Well… since I’ve been back in Japan, both you and I have been stuck in training camps practising, I guess.

Haruka: It’ll be like this until the All-Japan Swimming Championships. It can’t be helped.

01 Blessed with the perfect body He has flexible joints and a wide range of movement around his shoulders, giving him a physique fit for butterfly strokes. His swimming style that makes use of his long limbs and highly-trained muscles is at a level that saw him winning places at previous national tournaments!

02 Fixation on winning His obsession for winning is much stronger than anyone. Ever since he was a child, he was already competing with Rin over various things such as popsicles and sodas. They might’ve been trivial, but they were battles that he couldn’t lose!

03 A diligent replier but a lazy smartphone user? He has a diligent side to him, such as his letter correspondence with Rin, but in general, he’s a bit of a slacker. He tends not to reply to people on his smartphone, especially on messaging apps, where typing in words is too troublesome.

04 Love what you do and do what you love He’s the type to really give his all to the things that interest him. Since he’s lived his life focusing on nothing but competitive swimming, his academic performance is mediocre.

05 He and I Rin and He respect each other and are brothers in arms. While they do clash sometimes, they built a “real team” together. Even now, they continue to stimulate each other as they walk their own paths towards their dreams and goals.

06 GOOD advice! He’s always calmly observing his surroundings, and he’s good at noticing small changes. He gives accurate advice and is well-loved by his underclassmen.

07 Where…am I? He’s unaware of his own poor sense of direction, and would openly and brazenly lose his way. Every time he goes missing, Rin or Aiichirou would have to go look for him. Maybe they’re getting used to it, and lately, it’s taking less and less time for them to retrieve him.

Theme 01: “How would you describe Makoto Tachibana in one word?”

Rei: When speaking of Makoto-senpai, the fact that he is a reliable senpai who started the Iwatobi High School Swimming Club and brilliantly lead us as the club captain, comes to mind! I respect him very much! Also, together with Haruka-senpai, I guess you can say they “breathe like A and Un.” Their relationship is truly beautiful…! (T/N: A-un no Kokyuu is an idiom that describes two people who are so in-tuned they are able to understand each other without using words or gestures)

Sousuke: Makoto just coddles him too much.

Haruka: What do you mean?

Sousuke: I said what I said.

Rei: Please, both of you! ….ahem…so, if you’re to describe Makoto-senpai in one word…

Haruka: Sloppy.

Sousuke: Big.

Rei: Huh!? Those are such insincere answers…!

Haruka: No it’s not. He doesn’t put the dishes back to the same place, and he leaves his laundry scattered around.

Sousuke: I don’t see many guys who meet my eye level, so he’s tall, right?

Haruka: He told me recently that he’s grown taller again at a physical exam for new students.

Sousuke: Seriously?

Rei: U-um… ehh, Makoto-senpai is, very kind and gentle…

Haruka: …you think so?

Rei: Huh? He is not!?

Sousuke: I don’t think someone who has such a hungry and powerful swimming style should be described as gentle.

[Translation] Free!DF Spotlight Color: Sousuke Yamazaki - Cross Talk 04

Theme 04: “What kind of person is Sousuke Yamazaki?”

Makoto Tachibana A while ago when I was visiting my hometown, I went to a sports equipment shop and saw Sousuke lining up at the cashier by chance. He was holding a really gaudy jersey with zebra print, so I was quite shocked. Just as I was thinking “So Sousuke wears this kind of clothes, huh…” which is quite unexpected, he was on the phone with someone saying “A black-and-white jersey, right? I’ve got it,” brimming with confidence the whole time. In the end, Sousuke really bought that jersey and left. And it suddenly hit me: is that what a “black-and-white jersey” means…? But Sousuke looked really happy with himself, so I thought it didn’t matter. And when I saw him again after, I offhandedly asked him about the incident, and turns out his older cousin asked him to shop for a jersey for him. Apparently, someone from the higher-ups was going to be at a training course for chefs, so he wanted a new jersey for the occasion….huh, so, was that zebra print really okay!? When he said black-and-white jersey, didn’t he just mean two-tone!? Sousuke said “Black-and-white is still black-and-white,” but I wonder if things turned out alright for his older cousin…?

Kazuma Katou Ah…yeah, that school that Sousuke went to, called Samezuka? They did that thing called “Maid Cafe” at the cultural festival, didn’t they? I heard that the omlette rice was very well received. Well, ultimately, I’m the one who taught Sousuke how to cook it, so of course it’s delicious! And if you ask me, I’d say he still has much to learn. He didn’t finely chop the ingredients to the exact same size, and it wasn’t cooked to perfection either. But then, Sousuke has always been the sloppy kind since he’s a kid. It’s still a long way from the “legendary fluffy gooey omelette rice” that I learned from my days training in Tokyo. Also, there’s that thing, right? At a “Maid Cafe” you have to write words on the omelette rice with ketchup and say “Moe Moe Kyuun” or something, don’t you? So I told him that ketchup writing is a must, and I made him practice until he perfected writing “Master I love you ♡ .” Well, he was so terrible at it, I almost gave up on him a few times, but I manage to get him to write “Master I love you ♡” perfectly just in time on the day of the cultural event! But in the end, it was the maids’ job to do the ketchup writing! I’m sorry Sousuke! Anyway, maybe it’ll be a useful skill to have one day!

- You really treasure the things your friends or underclassmen give you, don’t you?

They are things they chose especially for me, so yeah, kinda. Except I don’t know what to do with the wallet chain Rin gave me. Rin told me to just attach the chain to my belt, but in the end, I almost never used it. Also, I don’t know what to do with the “beware of kangaroo” sign either, so I leave it lying around. My dad likes to ask me “wanna hang it up at the shop?” with a smirk on his face though…

- You have so many books! Are you the kind to read a lot?

Ah…they are not all mine. I read quite a lot of textbooks and articles on swimming, but nothing much otherwise. A while ago, Ai made me read this super thick book called “The Merry-go-round Man Special: The Third Victim Who was Buried Inside the Plaster Figure was Alive!? ~Detective who Curses Love from the Bottom of the Pool Series~”…so I borrowed it from him, but once I opened it, I fell asleep without realizing. Ai has been asking me what I think of it every day, so I really think I need to do something about it.

- So apparently you’re not very good at remembering your way…

It’s true that I get lost quite often, and I always have people looking for me…come to think of it, recently when I called Rin after getting lost, he asked me what I could see in front of me, and when I answered “there’s a red car” he got really mad at me. I wonder what that was about.

[Translation] Free!DF Spotlight Color: Sousuke Yamazaki - Item Check!

BAG: FOR OUTINGS

Fundamentally, he’s the type who doesn’t like to carry a bag, and he usually puts his wallet and smartphone in his pocket when he goes out. The way he handles his wallet makes it so vulnerable, that Rin got worried and bought him a wallet chain as a present.

He does use a bag when he has more to carry, such as when he goes on a trip, but he only brings the bare essentials so there’s always lots of space left.

Because he almost never uses a bag, he often finds things like expired day passes or tourist maps left in it. Also, he’s quite particular about always bringing a handkerchief with him.

HIS ROOM AT HIS PARENTS’ HOME

His bookshelf is crammed full of books, but it appears that they don’t all belong to Sousuke. Books that are about competitive swimming and sports-related are his, but Kazuma’s recipe books and world photography collections are also stored there.

His desk drawer is where he keeps Rin’s letters, and sometimes when he recalls what Rin wrote, he’d use them as an excuse to tease Rin. However, he hasn’t told Rin about the existence of an unfinished letter that he never sent.

SOUVENIRS FROM RIN

He keeps souvenirs such as the koala T-shirt Rin gave him in a safe place.

Momotarou has been pleading with him saying he wants the T-shirt if Sousuke isn’t going to wear it, but because they are all precious items to Sousuke, he doesn’t give them away.

However, since Rin, being Rin, likes to buy him gag gifts as souvenirs, the number of useless souvenirs he owns is increasing.

“VICTORY” CHARM

He always takes the victory lucky charm he got from Momotarou with him when he’s about to face something important, and it serves as quiet support to Sousuke’s heart.

SMARTPHONE

Aiichirou and Momotarou contact him a lot on his smartphone. He uses a messaging app with Aiichirou, where they discuss their practice regimen, but he can’t keep up with the speed of Aiichirou’s replies, and most of the time they end up talking over the phone.

Lately, he’s been getting calls from Makoto. More recently, he received a call from Haruka out of the blue, but he didn’t notice it, and he never called back, so he still doesn’t know what it was about.

Natsuya: It was nice having all those discussions with you at the joint training camp! Your advice during practice was pretty good, too, Yamazaki. The fact that you’re able to give such precise advice is proof that you have an observant eye.

Sousuke: You’re too kind…thank you.

Natsuya: What do you consciously focus on when you’re watching them practice?

Sousuke: I haven’t really thought about it before… it’s just that, I can tell the changes in the physique and form of the guys at the swim club pretty easily. Like when they tone up, their hip size changes right away.

Natsuya: That’s amazing. Speaking of which, you totally put your observant eye to use in shogi (T/N: Japanese chess,) too. Y'know, the one they had in the game room…

Sousuke: Yeah. It’s been a long time since I last played it though, so it took a while for me to get a hang of it again.

Natsuya: Haha, but it was a losing streak for me, even though I’m normally pretty good at board games! I was really impressed by your straightforward attacks.

Sousuke: When I was in high school, I played games like shogi quite often. My roommate was a really good player, so his attacking style probably rubbed off on me.

Natsuya: Oh right, Samezuka is a boarding school. That’s so awesome. If only we had more time, we could’ve played shogi, and chess, and go, and so much more! I may have lost the board game, but I was on a good track of winning the shogi stacking game, wasn’t I?

Sousuke: I guess so, since I’m not very good with delicate movements…

Natsuya: That’s true, you don’t look like the type. Oh, but, that time, our match was…

Sousuke: Th-that was…I’m very sorry.

Natsuya: Hahaha, who would’ve thought a ping pong ball would come flying our way? And they were playing table tennis saying things like “capybara showdown!”…what a spirited bunch.

Sousuke: No, I’m really sorry about Momo. I’ll make sure he hears from me later…

Natsuya: Haha, don’t worry about it. I mean, Aoba from my team caused you grief, too. Let’s go eat somewhere together again someday. We had a great joint training camp.

Sousuke: Yes, thank you very much, Kirishima-san.

Makotos quiet music played in the background of the apartment, as your groaning and whining could be heard over the soft piano, "I don't wanna do this stupid editorial" you mumbled falling face first into your computer, "How far along are you?". He asked tilting his head to removing his glasses as you turn the laptop to him.

"uhm, you have a sentence down." he pointed out on the doc, "and its the title of the article...." he mumbled with a sigh, as he returned the doc to you.

"I got mine done, I can help" he said in an attempt to console you.

You look at him with empty eyes, "I feel it in my soul, my beautiful whimsical soul Mako. How much I don't wanna do this" uttering the words and flopping onto his floor.

"uh-!" he began to panic "well don't die over it either!" he thought for a moment before closing his textbook and notes, and scooching over to you caressing your hair. "Why don't we take a break, I know a cute cat cafe. It's on me" he added with a sweet smile "you've been staring at the doc since you came here".

He held your hand leading you to the station, and onto the train. Pointing out small things out in the distance, trying to cheer you up from the assignment due. As your figure leaned onto him, sticking to him like a cat. "I think if we go to the cafe, they'll wanna keep you" he teased, softly humming as he left you to rest on his broad shoulder.

...

"Wanna look at the menu? we still have a few stops" he asked showing you the menu on his phone, scrolling through the intricate and sugary drinks, the flakey and soft pastries, and of course the cats that lived at the cafe.

He smiled to himself over how cute they looked on the screen, "reminds me of this one cat I'd see on the way to Haru's house in Iwatobi. It was a little white cat" he reminisced fondly over the furry feline of the past, his gaze leaving the phone and looking over the sky line. It was a familiar yet strange sigh to him, not yet comprehending he was away from his home town. A sigh left him, as he fidgeted with his phone, thinking back to Iwatobi and how you both ended up dating.

Eventually the train made its final stop and Makoto gently coaxed you off the train and into the small bodega where the cat cafe was located.

A small shop, where the door rang when you opened the door, an old couple welcoming you with glee, cats meowing and rushing towards his side. You two wereh the only ones there, it was an odd time to visit the cafe anyways.

You both ordered drinks and food, sitting on the floor play with the kitties as while waiting for your order all while the cats clamored towards Makoto. Coaxing him into petting and giving them attention.

"Maybe you should stop studying, and just work here" you grumble petting the only cat that wasn't in Makotos lap, as you look at Makoto being covered in needy cats. "Uh, maybe if it paid a little more" he chuckled nervously getting up ( a bit to eagerly) to retrieve your order.

"Jeez these cats act like they've never seen a human" he mumbled speed walking to the register, while the horde followed suit.

As you both sat down to eat with a cat cuddled up to your thigh, the old couple brought the cats into the back (to prevent them from further bothering you), the sun was setting, the sweetness of your parfait on your tongue, the soft music playing in the background, quiet exchanged between other costumers, and Makotos soft eyes looking at you admiring the outside.

"Do you ever get bored of me?" he asked suddenly with a nervous undertone.

You furrow your brows at the question "no, of course not mako" you reply stealing the strawberry on his crepe. He gave a weak laugh his hands in his lap, staring at the plate of whipped cream and berries. "we've known each other since our first year of high school, and started dating since... and I feel like I haven't changed much, nor do I take you out one dates often". He said quietly looking away.

"Do you ever get bored of Haru? you've known him a lot longer than me"

"Wha- no! of course not, he's my best friend... and I like supporting him as one-"

"You see how dumb that question is?" you sigh scratching the kittens, ear. "There's a reason why we've stuck together so long, unlike me staring at my assignment I could stare at you for hours without going insane".

Upon hearing your last words he shyly looked away his ears now red. At the mere thought of being looked at by you for eternity, but now that he thought about it. There really was a reason why they stuck together, like every other friend he'd met throughout his years in swimming and how important each one is to him. But you, especially you who appeared in his homeroom during your first year of high school and brought him out of his shell more.

"Your right, guess I said that without truly thinking" he chuckled smiling at you, before picking up his fork to eat. Noticing more berries gone from the top. The his gaze followed you hand, and how your pointer finger and thumb looked suspiciously red. "H-hey!" he pouted eating the singular strawberry left, "at least I left you something" you giggle taking a bite of your parfait.

He mouth curled up subtly (there really wasn't a time he wouldn't be smiling around you), as he ate the sweet treat looking at you once more with those eyes.

"Then promise we'll never get bored of each other?" he smiled, his signature sweet smile that could make anyone's day better by simply looking. His pinky finger out, like he'd seen in so many movies and read in books.

"I pinky promise Makoto, I'll never get bored of you".
