Place Value
For Grade 1, we are only interested with the place values of whole numbers. We do not want to introduce decimals until he has a good grasp of division and fractions because we want him to understand how these decimals come about and we know that they are quotients when we divide a smaller number by a bigger number and that they can be written in proper fraction forms.

Our first grader's Science syllabus for the first quarter. . Creating his syllabi took us quite a long time because he always wanted to be part of the planning process. What can we do? It's his learning we are talking about here anyway.😜 . Nothing much is new here because we also have to follow DepEd's curriculum. We'll just spice it up a bit with read-aloud stories, as motivation for every topic, and a lot of hands-on activities as possible. And oh, we'll also get to know some scientists and their works. We have a little scientist here who studied chemistry, astronomy, and human anatomy on his own so this household has to step up.😜 . We're confident that this will be a lot of fun because this was approved, by our little one, himself, last night, including the poster design!😛 . P.S. A friend suggested that we post our lessons/curriculum/portfolio in an online platform like wordpress for easy checking (we enrolled with a provider) and for others to use, if they like it. He initially had doubts in disassembling them but with our assurance that it's ok to do it and that we also did it when we were younger, he continued with his plan. . I want him to have his "aha" moments because I know that what he'll discover will stay with him forever. This was the advice of our old school dean to incoming freshmen at university- aim to get those "aha" moments. . As for our little one, he told us that he discovered that: . (1) The pen has a protection for the graphite, which we commonly know as lead but little one insists that it is really made of graphite, which is made up of carbon, and not lead. . (2) There is a piston-like thing at the end, where the eraser is. . Buttons, sticks, shells, etc easily formed into things which to him were planets... . • m a t h • . I believe that in order for kids to overcome math anxiety they should first have a good grasp of the concept of numbers (numbers and number sense). Then we could start with addition as putting together of things and subtraction as taking away some things from a given set of things. . The use of concrete objects or examples can help them have a good understanding/grasp of the abstractness of these concepts. We can do this by using toys or manipulatives that children can touch and count with their own hands. . This is what we did with our 6-year old when he was younger and so far, so good. • c r y p t o g r a p h y • . Little one is into codes and ciphers. We got this book at around 25php (.5$) from booksale at megamall. Such a good find because it discussed how egyptians make codes, a little of Braille, Morse, Cephamore, Circular codes, Caesar ciphers, etc. He sometimes post encrypted messages around the house for us to decode. It never bores! . Here we made a Caesar Cipher Wheel to get a hands on of it and he is using it to encrypt a message for his dad. We told him that we can level this game up once he masters division with remainders. He actually taught himself division with a 1-digit divisor but we need one with modulo 26.
