Putting this out into the universe
karen cancel all my meetings for this afternoon. slender aphrodite has overcome me with longing for a girl.
While sitting in his high-chair, your baby drops the spoon. You get up, pick it up from the floor, give it back to Baby - only for him to throw it away on purpose.
If this scene sounds familiar to you, you might wonder why he does that. Is he rebellious and tries to upset you on purpose? Does he have a really silly kind of humor? No and no. In fact, your baby is busy conducting his very first scientific experiments. His brain is starting to understand two important concepts.
The first one is called “Cause and Effect”: When i throw away the spoon, mom picks it up. When i do it again, she does it again. Oh, yay!
The second is called “Object permanence”: When i throw away the spoon, it disappears - No, it doesn’t, mom picks it up! It’s still there, even when i can’t see it!
To fully grasp these concepts, your baby needs to repeat those experiments again and again and again. That’s annoying to you - but try to smile at your little scientist!
another cognitive thing they’re learning is “when i drop something, it will fall down every time!” - boom, gravity
also, as important, they’re learning social emotional skills like trust. “every time i lose something, mom, helps me. even if it makes her mad.”
always pick up the spoon - you’re teaching the kid that they can depend on other people
Important information for people who get annoyed/mad when kids “act out”
they’re just learning, fam, give it time
Again a good post send by God
A post that isn’t about hating babies for once.
“men dont like that. its such a turn off” good . turn off . where is ur off button . shut up . please stop making noise
What /did/ menswear-inspired womenswear look like in the 1860s? I hadn't heard about this before and I'm very curious.
So there were a few popular garments inspired by menswear, though they don’t look masculine to us today.
One was the Garibaldi blouse, based on Italian army uniforms:
(shown here in red, but later more popular in white)
another was the Zouave jacket, taking its inspiration and name from French soldiers in North Africa:
(colonialism bad. jacket good)
a lot of other more menswear-y female clothing was similarly military-inspired:
(dress with braid trim on the front)
(Riding habit- check out that trim)
(bow tie. not quite as heavily gendered in its inspiration, but definitely something men also wore at the time)
it doesn’t read the same way to us now, but one could definitely have taken some of these elements to give Jo a slightly more androgynous look using actual period girl’s clothing. Zouave jackets and Garibaldi blouses she might have even gotten as hand-me-downs from Meg, since they were also popular in the late 1850s and the book never says exactly when the family lost their money. though personally I’ve always preferred the option where Jo’s disdain for feminine finery shows in the way she wears pretty much whatever and gives nary a damn, giving her some period masculine-leaning touches in her attire could be an interesting way to go
but that would require the costumer and director to do any in-depth research on the connotations of different types of mid-Victorian garments. instead they just stuck her in men’s clothing that she’d have no reasonable way of getting and the public wearing of which would have ruined her employment prospects AND Meg’s, all four girls’ marriage chances, and their whole family’s reputation
Me, thinking about high school:

fun funeral facts
embalming, the process of chemically preserving a corpse, is typically not required by law. unless you need to transport the body long-distance or postpone the burial, it’s 100% a vanity thing.
a body still rots in air-tight conditions. so “protective” or “sealed” caskets are basically a scam, and anything fancy like metal is a waste of money.
want a beautiful casket for a viewing, but think burning or burying an expensive piece of hardwood is a waste of money and trees? rentals exist.
you don’t need a coffin for cremation. the minimum requirement is that the body be in a “cremation container,” which is a simple cardboard box.
home funerals are an option. you don’t need to hand the body over to a funeral home, and you can keep their involvement to a minimum.
natural burial sites exist. you can have your unembalmed body straight up thrown in the dirt to be tree food, if you want.
there are a lot of funeral homes that will prey on your ignorance and vulnerability in order to get as much money out of you as possible. they may imply optional certain services are legally mandatory, steer you away from cheaper options, charge additional costs for what’s supposed to be all-inclusive services, etc.
one person’s death is another person’s profit. know your rights, do your research, and apply the same scrutiny you would to any other business.
hozier really came out here and changed his link to his merch on his site to “take me to merch” and this is the best way to remember he’s a fucking millennial.
