In a Sentimental Mood
I can’t believe I’m graduating college at the end of this month. It hasn’t hit me yet. I’m happy I have made it this far, but I’m worried about the future. What is next for me? Where is life going to take me? Am I prepared? Will I be happy? My biggest fear has always been failing or not being good enough to accomplish things important to me. This college journey has been a constant growing experience. I have cried, laughed, loved, argued, broken hearts, broken down, and built myself back up. I have learned a lot and I realize I still have a lot more to learn.
It’s okay to stop and acknowledge your accomplishments. It’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out. I guess that’s the beauty of life; constantly being propelled into the unknown while simultaneously making meaningful relationships and experiences. A guest speaker last week said “time is an unrenewable source”. Remember that in your pursuit of happiness. Make the most of each moment.
Take care of yourself; your mind, your body, your heart, your spirit. You can’t take care of others if you are not okay. Speak your mind. Heal. Repair. Love. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself. It’s a necessity. Too often we try to take care of others when we ourselves are damaged and in need of a hug. I am guilty of this. It’s hard to admit when there’s an imbalance in your emotional/mental state. Social media makes it harder to admit when you have a problem. We are constantly bombarded with half truths of people in their “happiest” moments. When did being vulnerable equate to weakness? Asking people who care about us for help takes courage and strength. Take care of yourself.
I’ve come a long way from the shy first year student I was 4 years ago. Who knows what’s next? I know as long as I take care of myself, appreciate every moment, make meaningful relationships, and pursue my happiness, I’ll be okay.
P.S. - The title “In a Sentimental Mood” is one of my favorite Duke Ellington songs.

“There was never really discussion about texts or – it was not a religious discussion. It was a political discussion. It was more hammering what they were believing than teaching us about the Quran. Because it has nothing to do with the Quran. They didn’t even have the Quran; they didn’t want even to give us a Quran.”
