Lounge was our campus bar at Cranbrook….it wasn’t “A Lounge”, “Cranbrook Lounge” or “The Basement Lounge”, it was just LOUNGE. As in, “Are you going to lounge tonight?” Both noun and verb, it was a place and action simultaneously. There was always a theme to Lounge, chosen by the students hosting it…the themes could be anything from a color “Pink Lounge” to music “Swing Lounge” to nonsense “Lounge Lounge”.
My friend John hosted a “Thesis Lounge” last night here in LA to celebrate the opening of this years Cranbrook thesis show and the residency of artist Kristin Cammermeyer, who had a huge installation in her studio. Alums came by to hang out, drink beer, and watch a video feed of the show from Detroit. In grad school, we would have all gotten shit drunk (Lounge was on Wednesdays and Fridays) and crawled home to our dorm rooms. I didn’t drink because I was driving and I wanted to go to yoga today, and John was in the midst of a juice fast. Instead of a sticky, grungy basement, we were at John & Daras lovely house, complete with firepit! We are old and healthy, ha! But the best thing has not changed….hanging out with artists, shooting the shit, laughing at crazy stories and looking at art. In this picture I’m sitting at John & Daras Saarinen Tulip Table, so the circle (literally and figuratively) is complete!
Thanks John!
