I think I know what you mean, about wanting a main character who I can stand in the shoes of. I’ve also been getting kind of skeptical of my conclusions, and wanting to write some stories without happy endings. Only satisfactory. I dunno.

I believe Stephan King said something akin to "Sometimes it's the unanswered questions that stays with us the longest" It's kind of inspiring to think about it in that aspect, if everything works out perfectly maybe there is no real conclusion. it's like a self serve drink, it's always made just the way you want it so it's always good, but when someone else makes it just right you enjoy it all the more because it's a surprise...

Perhaps not the proper analogy, but regardless I don't want happy endings I just want believable.

Concepts for writing...

And again I fall back to my passtime, plotting concepts and enjoying the free time presented to me by contemplating a world which I quite enjoy. And it falls to me once more to question "Who is the hero of our tale." Most times I would say "Easy, it's the strong male who pursues riches and plunder!" But I stopped myself. "Perhaps he saves the world?" I asked before looking to my keyboard. "The world is awfully large for one person to save." So I stop and think about it, and I REALLY think about it.

Why do I want a male as my lead? So I can place myself in his shoes and pretend for just a minute that his victories are mine, so his moments of drowning sorrow are shared. But I thought about it REALLLL hard. and I realize something. I don't WANT a male lead. I don't WANT a hero. I don't WANT someone to save the world. I want a PERSON. 

So here I am asking you boys, girls or otherwise. What would you do? Would you want to go ye old fantasy and simply "Hero saves the world." cliche? Or would you prefer something new? something human? For me, a simple girl trying to assemble some semblance of a normal life while dealing with a distant over protective father, in a world choked and dying on poisonous fumes is more then enough for a story I would consider good. This woman will set out to simply live, but be forced to see the disgusting truth of the world. Broken, battered and abused she will struggle and climb to the top of a hole which claims her as its victim... But then I ask myself. Would she be strong enough alone? when someone is given hope and beaten down time and time again, perhaps being alone is the opposite of what you want.

In this case this poor girl will witness her entire life crumble, and the only things she will have left will likely die on her journey to safety. Leaving her alone in the world, but a woman is no weaker then a male. What would drive me forward in a situation like this? Truthfully I doubt I could pull through. If I lost everything, family, friends and otherwise. I wouldn't want to continue. So now I'm forced to ask, what is her motivation to live? 

And I draw a blank. 

Sometimes concepts are less about creating a world, and more about populating it with believable characters who love, can be loved. And who feel, fall and pick themselves up off the ground. 

But I'm talking out my ass. So I'll go back to working through my pages of crap and sorting it.
