We're 3 Weeks Away from Kisame Week!
We're back with some Shark Facts to celebrate our favorite Hidden Mist warrior in time for Kisame Week! This time, we look into sharks and their role in the food web!
When close to giving birth, female sharks (both when laying eggs and giving live birth) will lose their appetite. This instinct is thought to prevent cannibalism when the newborns enter the world.
There are three known ram-feeder sharks! Similar to how baleen whales sweep up krill and zooplankton, basking sharks, megamouth sharks, and whale sharks feast upon millions of tiny invertebrates, small fish, and zooplankton to power their massive bodies–they can filter out on average 450 tons of water to capture their prey.
Sharks’ bite can pack a punch! The Cookie Cutter Shark, also referred to as the Cigar Shark, will approach its larger prey and steal a chunk of their flesh in the dark depths of the Pacific and Atalntic—they leave a curricular mark, similar to a cookie cutter device on fresh dough!
When a shark dies, it returns to the food web of its habitat! Similar to whale falls, shark remains, once they have drifted to sea floor, will provide food and nourishment for countless small vertebrates, arthropods, mollusks, and microbacteria. This ensures that nutrients are recycled and redistributed within the food web and continue to power the organism inhabiting that environment.
One of sharks’ primary roles within their ecosystem is keeping the fish population in check! Sharks, like many predators, tend to hunt the weak, sick, and aged prey of their choosing, maintaining a balance between prey species, which in turn allows producers such as coral and aquatic vegetation the ability to replenish their nutrients to fuel the entire food chain.
Sharks strengthen biodiversity! Their migration patterns, feeding schedules, and general marine movement activity. This ensures that food sources are plentiful for each niche of different ecosystems.

And so the countdown begins for Kisame Week 2026, our 6th year running a week long event in celebration of our favourite shark man.
This year, we’re shaking things up with a bingo board style prompt list. Consisting of 24 prompts and a free space for Any AU, you’ll be able to post multiple times throughout the posting period, or once and link out your works from there.
Most of the rules have not changed, so we’ll be recycling some of the old posts from previous years, and adding new ones where needed.
