FINAL IDEA

SYNOPSIS:

An individual is given a battery, which will be a currency for value/their value. In front of them will be 5 photos representing a stage in life where your values will determine which path you will take.

THE SELECTED VALUES:

Creating an event for your birthday - Family vs Friends (Do you value your family more? Or your friends more?

Going wide for a party - Time vs health (do you value in enjoying the moment or value your health more?, as going hardcore for a party may cause problems later on in life)

Choosing a Uni degree - Money vs love/happiness ( Do you want to study what you love, placing value in doing what makes you happy or studying what you can make money, placing values in financial support.)

Starting a family - Settling down Kids vs career (Do you want to slow down and raise a child, family values or continue to climb the ladder at your workplace, career values)

In a long term relationship - Marriage vs independence (Do you want to get marry, traditional values of having to get marry, or just happy with not getting marry, modern values of not needing to get marry to be considered successful in life.

FURTHER INSTRUCTION:

Grabbing the photo, the machine will randomly choose a value for them and the path they have taken as a result of the value (via showing a video of the path they have taken as a result of the value that is given/stated in the voice over) . Based upon what the individuals received, they will choose a corresponding paper circuit with a drawing of the value. They will insert the battery in and press it, lighting the LED lights, showing that value is now given to it. If the individual agrees with the value then they will be allowed to leave the battery in. If not, they must return their battery. Individuals must explain why they agrees and disagree with the value before deciding to keep it or return the battery.

CONCEPTUAL IDEA:

Our actions are influenced by our values. We make decision based on our values and uses our values as a way to explain our action. This work serves to show how strong values plays in a person's action and identify and is present throughout a person’s entire life time. As a value is given to the individual and they are asked to either agree with it or not, it makes them question and think about their own values as well as show them how their values influences why they make certain decisions

TOPIC: VALUES

WHAT ARE VALUES?

- Values are ideas that can influence and guide our actions. Thus, they are similar to goals, fears, intentions, policies to a degree. As they all can influence and guide our actions.

- There is a no clear way to divide up types of values as it is different from people to people

- However, a simple way to divide them up is:

o how we aim to treat people (honestly, openly, generously, without mercy);

o how we aim to act more generally (boldly, thoughtfully, carefully);

o how we aim to approach things (with reverence, with levity);

o how we aim to keep things (simple, sensual, rocking, full of surprise).

WHY ARE VALUES IMPORTANT?

- Values are there to help us avoid taking infinite calculations when we want to act

- For example, instead of calculating in each conversation, at each moment, what to reveal and what to conceal, a person who adopts the general value of being honest, by default would tell the truth and not conceal anything.

- So, values are a form of knowledge about what works in general, optimized for the improvisation of living.

- Values guide as not just in action but also in how we plan and set goals. Thus, values underlie all acts where we feel that we have a choice in.

- Our goals, plans and policies are all justified in terms of our values.

INFLUENCES ON VALUES

- Values are updated due to new information, like when we are exposed to previously unknown consequences of choice. Experiencing new emotions can change or add to your values.

- A person explains most of their actions by their values. This allows people to explain their actions in a way in a way that can be understood (for them to understand).

- Human beings are so attached to being rational that they won’t do things for which they can anticipate not being able to give a reason.

- Us humans are always subconsciously talking about or expressing our values

- Humans try to make sense of their own behaviour, and others’ behaviour, over time, and the main way in which we do that is by collecting our own and other people’s reasons and assembling these sets of reasons into an “identity”. Thus, our values make up our identity.

- Values can be divided into 4 different sections with certain values overlapping.

WHAT IS COPPER

Copper, also known as ‘the red metal’, is one of the most electrically conductive of all the metal elements

- It’s also ductility and malleability

- The red colour comes from the fact that it’s easily oxidised

Physical properties:

Copper is quite weak (not much strength), and explains how it can be easily formed by hand. However, is not as easy to break due to its high toughness

Copper is very ductile and malleable (this is suitable for the electrical and jewelry industries)

Second only to silver, copper is both an excellent conductor of electricity and heat.

WHAT IS L.E.D LIGHTING

LED stands for light emitting diode

It produces light approx. 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs

They work by an electrical current passing through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs (the result is visible light)

HOW CIRCUITS WORK

The wires in a circuit carry the electric current to various parts of an electrical or electronic system

A battery or generator produces voltage, this is the force that drives current through the circuit (powering it)

Electric light works by using two wires to connect to the light. For electrons to do their job in producing light, there must be a complete circuit so they can flow through the light bulb and then back out.

Circuits can be huge power systems transmitting megawatts of power over a thousand miles

This week we experimented with simple circuits and electricity, in relation to our group project. We decided to use this form of material in relation to our theme of value. Here is a video of Michael using arduino equipment to power the function of his laptop.

2. Can creative acts be rebellious when rebellion has become canonised in art, design and media histories? What would a contemporary creative rebellion look like?

When reflecting on the conceptual question, I started to draw on what the words ‘canonised’ and ‘rebellion’ meant and how these two subjects could relate together and even possibly contradict each other in nature. A way I wanted to convey this conceptual thought was to bring this message back in its simplest form. This was achieved by representing the idea in a stained glass window design. This essentially relates back to religious symbolism and canonisation. I decided to merge this canonised image together with a rebellious personality, being James Dean, and presenting him as a saint. James Dean became a breakthrough actor for starring in the 1955 film “Rebel Without a Cause”, which had immortalised him forever in this adolescent, rebellious image. This directly draws parallels on how saints are immortalised within their own image through the form of a stained glass window. I am trying to achieve this same religious effect, except strategically using a rebellious image instead.

This allows the artwork to change the original purpose of a stained glass window, while relating it back to the conceptual question of what a canonised rebellion looks like. This struck me to highlight the importance of merging these two subjects, being canonisation and rebellion, as it highlights the contradictions of pairing these two together and ultimately representing what a contemporary rebellion would look like within society. This artwork alludes as to how this stained glass window is being used for a rebellious cause than a religious, further becoming a synthetic and contradictory image mimicking what a creative rebellion would look like now.

A major influence for this artwork was Kehinde Wiley and both of his series, ‘Lamentation’ and ‘Stained Glass’. His series of artworks takes a more urban approach to the depiction of a traditional stained glass window. As Wiley alters a stained glass window, he ultimately changes its purpose and role by presenting contemporary people instead of glorified saints. This was a reason as to why I looked towards his artworks for inspiration. I was also radically influenced by his artistic style and approach. Another major influence for my artwork were taking referencing from medieval traditional styles of stained glass windows. This was another importance reference as it was the base for my artworks structure, design, colour and style. By using this as an influence, it enabled me to make the most possible realistic representation of a stained glass window.

The process I had to undertake while completing my artwork was gradual. It was a slow start initially, as it took several brainstorms to come up with new ideas and concepts to convey the key question. This consisted with a process of trial and errors, reflections and looking for inspiration in order to discover new ideas. After thinking of a solid conception idea, this then lead me to start with the basics, which consisted of drawing the structure and overall form of the stained glass window. This then proceeded to actually painting the artwork with watercolour. This part of the process took the most time as it had to be a slow but steady, in order to achieve the best result. This ended up taking two to three weeks to complete the overall stained glass window. The experimentational side of the assessment consisted of using different paints, painting on different types of paper and even combining texters and water paints together. All of these experiments were vital for this assessment as it helped to perfect the end result of the artwork. Materials that I used while undertaking this assessment were minimal. To create my stained glass artwork, I used watercolour paints and a plain white A2 paper as a basis to paint on. Through using minimal materials, this enhances the artwork to stand alone by itself and represent the key message of canonised rebellion in contemporary art and what it looks like today. The overall time spent on completing the whole artwork and research enabled myself to go through a learning process.

I’ve recently added this detail to the final artwork as I realised that a label of the saints name is vital within a stain glass window. This also adds authenticity to the work and gives insight to who the chosen saint is without prior knowledge.

I have finally completed my watercolour stained glass window painting. These images below present the final artwork for the assessment. It has taken time and effort to complete, but the end result is worthwhile. Even though it has been completed earlier than the due date, there is still room for minor touch ups.

VALUE

‘The portable shaman’ was the item I made for this weeks activity. The value was placed on the properties of making life decisions for you.

What I bought:

I decided to buy this item because of it being a ‘Marc Jacobs’ copy item and I do love branded fashion labels. Also the fact that it was having a laugh at designer labels and the pretentious nature of it.

I also decided to buy this item because I thought it was innovative to have a rose scented item to carry with you anywhere. One of the pitches was you can take it to smell while in a bathroom which was pretty smart.

stained glass painting progress/experimentation

I’ve gradually been working on my stained glass window painting for the past few weeks. This also accounts for my experimentation as I have been considering different colour combinations, arrangement, patterns etc. After completing this, I have already started the water painting process. The approach I have undertaken to complete this artwork is to complete it section by section. With this strategy, this will pace myself to complete it by the due date.

(1st week ^^)

This stage was mainly about painting the background in detail first, while also adding initial paint to major parts (i.e the jacket, face, halo). This sets the foundational ground for the stained glass window aesthetic.

(2nd week ^^)

This stage was continuing with painting the major aspects of the artwork, being the clothes, face and hair. I also just finished off the drawing of the top half of the artwork (in order to paint later) and finished drawing the two opposing sides as well.

(3rd week ^^)

This stage was similar to last weeks progress, as it involved painting the top half of the artwork by further bolding the lines and ‘stained glass’ details. I also added more colour to the halo around his head to make it further stand out on the painting. After completing the top half of the artwork, I will then progress onto painting the two sides, finalising the facial details and finishing his clothing.

water colour experiments

This experiment consisted of using a cheaper brand of watercolour paints on a rougher type of paper. The result was desirable, but the paper seems to rough and not ideal for the overall painting.

I experimented with thinner paper, using a different type of watercolour which had a different result compared to the experiment above. This personally seemed to have a better result than the other experiment and highlights how important the paper materials are when painting with watercolour.

This experiment focused on trying paints/markers for the traditional black outline. I want to make sure I use the best method of mimicking the style of a stained glass window and might have to result in using both (black watercolour and black posca marker) of them for different sections of the painting.

stained glass research

- stained glass windows originated from the medieval period within Europe (C10th - C16th). The purpose was to enhance the beauty of the churches setting and to inform the viewer through narrative or symbolism.

- the glass used in a stained glass window is made by combining silica (alkali and lead oxide) and in order to stain it, metallic oxide and raw materials are applied.

- relates to ‘gothic architecture’ (developed in France C12th). These windows allowed great amounts of light into the church and created an impressive interior atmosphere.

http://kehindewiley.com/works/stained-glass/A contemporary artist who I have taken much inspiration from is Wiley and his ‘Stained Glass’ series. Wiley combines individuals within this beautiful stained glass work, altering their image to become ‘saint like’. It’s a perfect example of a contemporary take on the traditional art form and a main reference for me.

This series was based on stained glass windows and studies by French painter, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). It was produced by artisan stained glass manufacturers in the Czech Republic, ‘these pieces feature contemporary subjects set against ornate and extravagant backgrounds traditionally reserved for religious contemplation’.
