Better Man
Cigarette smoke filled the bar
I exhaled to the piano’s C Major
I could barely see your eyes
But when mine met yours from across the room
They dangerously smiled
And I knew that night, my heart would soon belong to you
Now we’re two years in and drowning
We both can’t catch our breath
The sharp space in between us
Cuts like the knife I hold in my hand
We are broken and I stand here bleeding
You swore, you were a better man
Whisky spills from your lips
It always does this time of night
I wish I were there to taste it
But hundreds of miles separate me from you
You drunkenly stutter, I am leaving
I wish I had told you I wanted to leave too
Your eyes and the way they stared into mine
That night in the smoky bar
Is the memory I continue to hold onto
For years, I will replay that memory as if it were a song
God, I wish you had taken me with you
Now we’re three years in and drowning
We both can’t catch our breath
The sharp space in between us
Cuts like the knife you hold in your hand
I question and fear your love for me
You swore, you were a better man
Cigarette smoke filled that noisy bar
Clouds of it so thick, I could barely see your eyes
But when mine met yours from across the room
I should have known
That the dangerous smile beneath them
Would eventually kill me
The sharp space in between us
It cuts like the knife you hold in your hand
Locking eyes with your cold stare
I whisper “ I trusted you to protect my heart”
You swore to me, you were a better man
