the blaring noise of your front door being knocked on and the frantic rings of your doorbell wake you up.
you groan, picking up your phone to check the time and covering your eyes for a moment from the initial shock of the brightness emitting off your screen.
catching a glimpse of a myriad of notifications from your best friend and his signature knocking patterns, though right now more frantic, you get up.
“what the hell do you want from me?” you sigh, rubbing your eyes as heeseung’s figure stands in the hallway.
“sorry for waking you,” he quickly apologizes, letting himself in and removing his shoes.
his disheveled appearance is a telltale sign that he ran all the way to your apartment. even though to your knowledge, his car is completely fine and running— or maybe his impatient ass ran up the seven flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator.
you honestly couldn’t care any less about what lee heeseung had to say that made him wake you both up at this hour in the night. so you tried to stumble back into your bedroom, navigating your dim apartment.
“hey! i came here for a reason!” heeseung calls after you, switching on the light.
“can we talk tomorrow?” you whine, covering your eyes with your hands, “i’m so tired, hee.”
“i know,” heeseung wraps his arms around your shoulders, “but this really can’t wait.”
“seriously?”
“seriously.”
yawning in defeat, you let heeseung guide the both of you towards your ajar bedroom door. he closes the door behind him as you sleepily situate yourself on your bed, back resting against your wooden headboard.
“talk,” you say as he sits adjacent to you.
heeseung looks everywhere but your eyes. his leg slightly bouncing which shakes the whole bed. his hands picking at the tag on one of your stray pillows.
the last time you’ve seen him this nervous he was opening his university decision letters.
“____,” he stammers, reaching out for your hand.
“did something bad happen?” you panic, giving your hand to him, “are you moving…?”
“no,” heeseung shakes his head, “um…”
you stare at his fidgeting body as you try to think of what could possibly be at the tip of his tongue.
“there’s no better way to say this,” heeseung sighs, squeezing your hand in his, “i love you.”
“you what,” you whisper, retracting your hand.
“i know, i’m sorry,” he says weakly, “i know this is sudden and probably the last thing you want to hear, but i really do love you. if you don’t love me back i understand and you can kick me out. we pretend this never happened of course, but please don’t ghost me. i can live with the fact you don’t love me but i can’t live without you in my life.”
“you love me?” you question again in disbelief, bringing your knees to your chest.
“how can i not?” heeseung chuckles in defeat, “you’re perfect.”
“shut up,” you bury your head in your knees.
“i can’t,” he smiles, “i love you. if you give me just one chance to prove it to you i will.”
“you really came all the way to tell me?” you whisper, picking at the skin around your nails.
“i’ve been meaning to for years,” he says sheepishly, “i realized i’ve loved you for all my life but never realized it wasn’t just platonic. i hate when you go on dates and when you have other guy friends. i hate that you let other men taint your self-worth, you’re truly the most deserving and lovable person i know.”
tears brim your eyes as you watch your best friend of over a decade ramble on about how much he loves you. the way his eyes bore into yours as they remain full of love.

“you were supposed to send me that report a week ago.”
here comes the insufferable perfectionist, with an annoying handsome face which makes it just impossible to hate him for too long. he pushes the glass so it settles still on the top of his nose bridge, eyebrows jotted together to hint a slight disappointment in you. you want to mock him, make faces and scream at him, “leave me alone, idiot!”, but then you visualise your resignation. what an asshole of a boss.
you lift your head up to meet his eyes, hands buried in the pockets of black trousers, leaning tall over your work cubicle. “i uhm- i was, i was sick. high fever,” oh gosh, you hope he doesn't catch the shakiness in your voice.
“high fever?” park sunghoon raises an eyebrow, skepticism etched on his face. “convenient timing, don't you think?”
your heart races, and you mentally kick yourself for not thinking of a better excuse. “it came on suddenly,” you stammer, hoping your blush isn’t too obvious. “but i'm feeling better now, so i'll get right on that report.”
and just as you're about to type away on your laptop, a soft but firm grip on your wrist stops you from doing so. and of course, it has to be park sunghoon, the sole trouble maker in your life.
“actually, come meet me at my office,” he says, before letting off your wrist and striding off to his office.
ugh, there you go, another hour long lecture again.
shortly after, you make it to his office. you glance back, all your colleagues getting ready to end their shift and head home. fuck you, park sunghoon, you evil man.
“sir, can i—”
“come in,” sunghoon's serious invites you in, and you close the translucent glass door behind you, which does a pretty good job of reflecting the inner furniture and heads in a blurry, but certain way. “don't just look around, take a seat.”
sunghoon doesn't lift his head up even for a second after you enter the room, he simply gestures you to sit down before him, as he types something on his own laptop, the coffee forgotten and cold beside it. you tap your heels slightly against the office floor, it's been a whole fifteen minutes inside this room already, a minute more and you might just combust.
it's hard to stare at his face. not in a boring, ‘he's so rude’ way, but more of in a breathtaking, ‘i want to kiss him’ way. to be honest, you've imagined how his lips would feel against yours, whether they would move in sync and sweep you by your feet, or steal your breath and make you fantasise. would he like the kiss? would park sunghoon ever kiss you? does he want to kiss you, like you do right now? his ever concentrated face directed towards the laptop screen, the little creases that form around his eyebrows makes him look so cute. you'd like to think that it's just a harmless crush on your grumpy boss, and nothing more than that.
but time's passing by fast, and you need to get home. the taps of your heels against the floor fastens as you say in a tone of urgency.
“mr. park, is this about—”
“call me sunghoon,” he startled you, closing his laptop, “we're of the same age, so it's weird.”
“ok, sunghoon,” you gulp, gosh it feels weird, “is this about me not submitting my leave application?”

sunghoon sets aside his laptop and leans in against the work desk, folded hands beneath his chin and another ‘know it all’ smirk shoots at you. you gulp, did he listen to you and minji talking too? oh no, no, no, no. you don't want to be fired.
“you annoying bastard,” it was intended to be a low whisper, but under the pressure of your enraging boss's stare, it came out louder than you intended.
“annoying bastard? i think that suits me?”
“no, mr park i didn't mean—”
“no no it's okay, i get that, a lot,” and now he gets up from his seat, circling around his desk to stand just in front of you.
“but i don't get ‘he's cute’ a lot.”

this current situation is really getting to you. you're trapped in a damn chair, you don't dare to move as his face only comes closer. a sudden wave of deja vu hits you; no, you've never been trapped in a chair like this by your boss before. but this intimacy, this fluttering proximity reminds you of those playful staring contest between you and him across the office, stumbling over paperwork and crashing against sunghoons chest, and now, this. you could feel heat rushing to your cheeks, as slowly his face transcends down further, now right beside your ear, his lips softly brushing the earlobe.

“i think i want to kiss you once more,” you whisper. a twitching smile, shy eyes looking up at him and he smiles back, you feel yourself blushing again.
“of course,” sunghoon chuckles, now lifting you up from the chair and sitting down on it himself. placing you on his lap, he leans in for a sweet kiss, once more. it's just as soft and breathtaking as before, this time, you melt even more as you hook your hands around his neck and blush furiously into the kiss.

unlike the rest of your peers, you hate going on school trips, especially overnight ones.
it was tiring to patrol the hotel late at night when everyone was supposed to be in their rooms at curfew. you were exhausted from being in charge of making sure everyone had a room once arriving.
and now you had to do one extra lap around the whole building before you could knock out on your bed.
but that was just your job as class president, you loved it, but you must admit sometimes you wish your vice president was given some of your tasks.
luckily for you, as you finished your lap around the floor everyone was staying, nothing seemed out of place.

when you enter the lobby it’s not empty, families and couples still wandering about, but thankfully none of your classmates were up but sunghoon whom you knew of.
“how long is the pool open for?” you ask the front desk.
“for another hour,” the woman behind the desk tells you, “do you need any towels?”
“one please,” you say, watching park sunghoon swimming around from the window.
you make your way out to the pool deck after thanking the woman, pushing the door open to see his head bob up from the water to stare at you.
“i brought you a towel,” you inch closer to the pool, “go to your room.”
“that’s sweet of you ms. president,” sunghoon coos, “but i’m not done swimming yet.”
“seriously, go to bed,” you pinch the bridge of your nose in annoyance.
“the pool doesn’t close for another hour,” he reminds you, “if you join me i’ll go inside.”

you groan in defeat, setting the towel on the closest pool chair and slipping off your slippers. walking towards the pool stairs and dipping your toes in. cursing at the temperature, you walk a couple of steps down just so the water touches below your shorts.
“are you happy now,” you roll your eyes as his drenched figure approaches you.
“come deeper,” sunghoon extends his hand.

The cold rain poured over your head, drenching your body entirely. Pushing the school door shut, the wind beat at your bare legs, forcing its cold breeze upon you. You set out to find the exchange student who you had never seen before but was obliged to search for because of class president duties.

you didn’t know how you ended up at this situation. sprawled on jake’s lap as he he held you in place, his hands firmly gripping your waist.
all you could remember was a few hours ago you got a call from jake’s sister, begging you to check up on jake as he wasn’t picking up her calls.
you knew she had been busy lately, packed with work and her engagement she barely had any time to do anything else.
so with a heavy heart, you walk up to the apartment you know all-too-well. up the elevator you’ve stepped in countless times, every corner haunting you with memories.
and just as you braced yourself to knock on his door, it clicked open.
jake raised his head, his eyes meeting yours.

you have a recurring dream that happens maybe once a week.
always about the same guy and living the same day. you’ve had it so often that you can recite every little detail that happens if someone were to ask you. though the only person who knows about this dream you keep having is your dream journal. which admittedly seems pointless now if you keep having the same dream, there’s no variety.
you’ve stopped recording your dreams since it's the same every night that you have a dream worth remembering. you only dream of him.
you wake up next to him, a child that you can only presume is yours jumping on top of you excitedly. she calls you mom and him dad. the three of you get ready, eat breakfast, he kisses you goodbye, and you take your daughter to school.
you drop off your daughter and go to your ordinary office job. then in the late afternoon you drive to pick up your daughter and go home. dinner is premade from the night before and you two wait for your husband.

it stayed unspoken as you both knew that soon you would be miles apart when jay would leave to start his job for working for his father and you would be running around the city looking for a job, a relationship didn’t fit in the picture.

“there’s no one else but me,” he shrugs. “i’ll have to take over eventually, so i might as well start now.”
“i guess you’re right,” you mumble. “is there anything that would make you stay?”
“you.” jay says honestly. “but we both know it’s too late.”
“i guess you’re right,” you sigh, playing with your food, your appetite is gone.
“sorry,” he apologizes. “not to get your hopes up or anything.”
“it’s fine, i figured you’d say that,” you get up and walk towards the kitchen to put your dishes in the sink.
the next day you ask jay when his flight would be leaving at the airport. he tells you that his plane leaves at twelve. you make sure you’re there by ten.
“jay!” you call out in the crowded airport when you spot the back of his head, his birthmark on his neck showing it’s him.
“____!” he quickly gets up from his seat at his gate. “you’re early?”
“i wanted to get you alone before everyone else comes!”
“oh,” jay scratches the back of his neck. “it’s just you that’s coming.”
“what! why?” you say shocked.
“i said bye to everyone else yesterday, i wanted it to just be us.”
“what if you’re forgetting someone?” you frown.
“i’m not leaving much behind,” jay shrugs. “moving brings me closer to my family and friends”
that bitter feeling started bubbling up inside of you. it was wrong to want to beg him not to leave you but there was a part of you that always wanted to be just a little selfish. enough to make him stay and commit to you, even long distance would suffice for you, but it wouldn’t for him. you knew that better than everyone.
“oh,” you look at the ground. “are we not friends?”
“that’s not what i meant-”
“it’s okay,” you can’t fight the frown on your face. “we’re not anything anyways.”
the rest of the time at the airport you sit at his gate in silence. a spot between you both as an invisible barrier. you badly want to leave and forget about jay but you won’t let him go until he has to get on the plane that will take him thousands of miles away from you.
you want to talk to him but cannot find any words. tongue-tied next to the boy you’ve grown to love in the short remaining semester of your university career.
jay cannot seem to find the right words either. you’re here right in front of him and he can’t just hold you close for the last hours you have together. anxiously checking the time on his phone leading up to boarding.
“boarding starts in 20 minutes,” jay says quietly.
“oh,” is all you can respond.
“do you want to go for a walk?” he asks, you nod.
the two of you walk side by side in circles in the area around his gate. in an uncomfortable silence, you are not used to having with jay.
“i have to get going,” jay pauses, stopping the both of you in his tracks.
you’re voice is still lost, tears brimming your eyes, you can only wrap your arms around his torso and cry.
“baby…” he whispers, drawing you in closer, if that was even possible.
you can’t stop crying, hugging him as your vision turns blurry.
“i’m sorry,” you finally stutter out, clutching a handful of his shirt.
“for what?” jay asks in genuine confusion.
“loving you when you said you weren’t looking for anything.”
“don’t say that,” he replies, feeling his own eyes getting teary. “it’s neither of our faults. time just wasn’t on our side. if i could i’d do anything just to be with you.” he says into your hair.
you reluctantly let go and find your way out of the airport and to your car. once climbing into the driver's seat you let the rest of it out. sobbing until you could no longer produce any more tears. while jay does the same while he gazes out into the sky from his airplane seat.
jay regrets not trying with you with every day that passes. he knows that the both of you could have made long-distance work but at the end of the day he knows he cannot live up to what you want. so he deems it best to ghost you while he’s in an american state. for work he claims but it seems more like a form of self-torture.
he can keep it together for the first couple of months of work, but soon his father notices something is up. he becomes frustrated with his son’s work, he hasn’t shown any growth in months and seems overall out of it. he sends him back home and tells jay to find himself before he even thinks about becoming a ceo.
there’s a knock at your door on a late saturday night. you’re slightly tipsy from some wine you had been sipping on, walking to the door calmly with no idea who it might be.
on the other side of your door is park jongseong. suitcase behind him, with a bouquet with your favorite flowers.
when he sees your face for the first time in a year he can only hope you’ll let him in to make up lost time.
“jay?” you say in disbelief, rubbing your eyes and wondering if the alcohol has already taken over your system. “you’re home?”
“i'm sorry if i'm coming home too late,” he says handing you the assorted flowers.
