Labubu devouring his Sonny Angel
Labubu, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. La-bu-bu: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the lips. La. Bu. Bu. She was La, plain La, ย in the morning, perched six point seven inches tall on the shelf. ย She was Boo in the popmart store. She was Bubu in the unboxing video. She was Laburetta hanging off my baggu tote. But in my arms she was always Labubu.
Did women only love Sabrina because they thought no man ever would?
Itโs not like what sheโs doing now is anything new, pop girls have been doing this exact performance for decades. The difference is that, for whatever reason, people convinced themselves she was different. That her music and image were somehow feminist or subversive, even though it was always just generic sex-pop with a few โdumb boy better not cheat on me >:(โ lines thrown in. Nothing about it ever read as progressive to me, so I never understood why anyone thought it was.
The more Iโve read about the backlash, the more it seems like it has less to do with what sheโs doing, and more to do with the fact that her largely female fanbase didnโt think she was attractive enough to be sexualized by men. Not because sheโs unattractive, sheโs not, but because she doesnโt fit the version of hot that women assume men would go for. At around 4โ10", with bobblehead proportions and a full face of glam that leans drag, to them she reads more like a toy than a threat. The female gaze filed her under Polly Pocket, something cute, unserious but above all else made for their amusement. They projected a version of her that felt safe and campy, and decided she was โfor the girlsโ. Maybe theyโre right that most men arenโt into that look, but that never stopped her from trying to appeal to them and as far as I can tell, she never claimed she wasnโt.
So now they feel betrayed, but by what? That she wants to be seen as sexy, or that she always did? I donโt think the backlash is about her changing. I think itโs about realizing she never fit the version of her they made up and that in the end, they were only ever comfortable with her as long as they believed no man ever would be.
