The symbolism of Murdoc wearing the Boogieman's mask is so huge...

In plastic beach, the Boogieman is tasked with bringing Murdoc to doom as he owed him payment for some deals that he struck.

So if Murdoc has Boogieman's mask, what does that imply?

In phase 3, Murdoc did everything he could to make his band successful, he burned down Kong Studios, kidnapped 2D, and rebuilt his studio on an island of trash in the middle of nowhere. He went a bit insane, Plastic Beach was his pride and joy.

In the phases in between, Murdoc went through a lot of character struggles, and it seems that during this phase, he has found more meaning behind making music for Gorillaz than just the fame (although it is definitely a perk)

So I don't know, but my theory is that Murdoc has become a more in depth character, and the reason that he is wearing Boogieman's mask is because he has become what he was once afraid of, which is success through many different failures.

(Also the fact that the band members didn't leave him behind this time makes me want to cRY-)

I feel like I’ve talked about Murdoc and dualisms quite a bit on this blog. P3 was perhaps the phase where this was the most apparent, where Jamie quite literally created two characters (The Evangelist and the Boogieman) to represent two sides of him. At the time, the question was posed - which side of him will win out? Is Murdoc as a person damaged beyond repair, or can he overcome his anger and trauma and grow? Alas, P3 was not successful, ended prematurely and this question was never answered.

No one in either Gorillaz-verse or IRL expects much from Murdoc. You can see it in comments on social media, discord discussions etc. He’s a bad person. He’s just doing ____ for attention or to garner sympathy. Many had decided that the Boogieman won out. Murdoc may have even believed this himself, being SO used to taking one step forward and five steps back. In a sense, it’s his security blanket. He’s always been more than that, but to actually let other know him is terrifying. In many ways, he’s been wearing a figurative mask for decades.

TLC opens with him literally tearing off this mask, and the first thing we see is fear, followed quickly by sadness. And it’s so perfect because prior to this we can assume the mask was stopping him from seeing the scene in front of him, protecting him in a sense - from his regrets, from the others seeing him with such a frightened expression. But as the video progresses, we see him transform right in front of us. He stares that memory right in the face, he helps the rest of the band climb the lighthouse and allows himself to be the last one to go into the portal. 

I genuinely thought they were going to leave him behind, but we see an ending we’ve never seen before - they help him. 2D smiles, confirming the reconciliation with an outstretched hand as if to say, “I see you, mate. We’d never leave you behind.” I can’t help but think back through this entire phase where it’s been so strongly implied that Murdoc fears just that (Desolé being the most obvious). Finally, at the end of this season, after confronting one of his demons, he gets his answer. He allowed himself to be seen and known, something that must have been so scary for him? And he was met with kindness and forgiveness. He’s no longer confined and limited by the mask he was wearing and I hope we can continue to see him grow 😭

OKAY I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THE ENDING OF LOST CHORD

First off, this is a final send off to Plastic Beach and I love it.

Second, it shows how much things have changed not only in regards to music but characters.

When the Lighthouse sinks Murdoc is the first to climb up top and if it were old plastic beach days, he’d climb even higher and just hold on as everyone else follows...but he doesn’t do that this time.

Murdoc helps them all up. ALL OF THEM. He supports them and tries to look out for the band. Something that never would have happened during ‘plastic beach’ days. Side note, he supports them all up in reverse of the order he found them. Noodle, Russel and 2D.

Then they all jump through the portal-leaving him behind! And at first we think that’s it. But you know who else thinks that? MURDOC

He isn’t even mad. In fact the way he closes his hand makes me think he thinks he deserves it. As if he was stupid to think that he should have made it out. After all, when plastic beach was under attack he left them all. Left and replaced Noodle in El Mañana, left Russel huge in the ocean and left 2D to get eaten in the whale. All he can do is try to get through it alone-like he always does.

But then...

2D comes back for him. The one person who went through so much shit and so much pain through the whole ordeal comes back. And with a smile too. Look how happy and surprised Murdoc is. Of all people to come back, it’s 2D.

This isn’t just a funny thing, 2D throughout the whole video is much calmer and reflective than everyone else. Murdoc is crying, Noodle is shocked and Russel is scared. All of them have to face the trauma they long forgotten/ignored. Especially Murdoc who tried to forget it all.

BUT 2D has already moved on. When he was in the whale and stuck on the beach he reflected on it. When he made The Now Now he reflected on his relationship (platonic) with Murdoc. 2D had long since healed from Plastic Beach and thus is less affected than the group. He can all so do the impossible and perhaps answers the question that Murdoc had wanted answered. That yes-

He is forgiven. They can move on.
