I got fired from Tumblr: A Brief Thinkpiece
I think the best part of getting fired from Tumblr is being able to log on without having to feel personal responsibility and stress every time this fucking site has one of its little breakdowns
Please make this post go viral so I can use it as leverage to get invited back and score some more of their free La Croix soda water and snacks
On a more real note, I want everyone to know that although I appreciate your love and support and concern, I actually feel really good about how it all went down and I have no regrets about any of it! I love to make jokes about this sorta stuff (I think this topic is ripe for gags) and I’d hate to think that any of it comes across as bitter or grudgey. I particularly don’t want any of my ex-coworkers to feel uncomfortable or sorry for me.
During my three years at Tumblr I had an amazing time, met some amazing people, and even did some work sometimes. Getting paid to play around on the site that’s impacted my life in more ways than most of you even realize was so fulfilling, and I doubt I’ll find another job quite like it.
I was actually fired back in January so I’ve had a lot of time to do some serious reflection. I didn’t expect this experience to be as deep and meaningful to my development as it’s been. When people asked me what I’ve been up to since, the response “working on myself” sounded so trite, and I didn’t even believe it to be true at first.
The truth is I’ve learned way more about myself, my needs, my values, as well as some effective methods for communication in the last two months than I ever could have guessed. I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I’m a better and happier person now, due to this opportunity for introspection, as well as the overwhelming support from a group of loving friends that don’t get enough recognition on this blog.
As for my future, I don’t even want to interview at a company that would see me speaking out against greed and callousness as a fireable offense so I’ve concluded that I’m not even going to lie about this in my next job interview. (Note to recruiters: I see you reading this and you’re welcome to browse my weird-ass blog anytime 😁)
There’s really too many people to tag and thank so I’ll just stick with @staff because I really still feel so much love for this community and the people who facilitate it.
FUCK YEAH TUMBLR! FUCK YEAH SELF-REALIZATION!
