"Aren’t they cute?” Kit showcased the box of kittens to his friend, the four of them wrapped snuggled in a blanket. None of their eyes were open yet and he hadn’t made any progress in finding their mother. No one had made any reports of thinking that their cat had been pregnant without their knowing, so he had been doing what he could to make sure that they were tended to. “I may have to send them home though. I’m not sure the professors would be too happy with me taking them to class with me.”

“I love the stairs. They’re so weird and useless.” Eddie could never bring himself to be bothered by the stairs making him late for classes. What better sign that class was not worth his time that day than the stairs deciding to take him somewhere else entirely. “They’ve always felt to me like one of the places where you can see how alive Hogwarts is. It’s just been absorbing so much magic for so long- why not manifest itself in some weird-ass stairs?” He watched as Kit sat up, and propped himself up on his elbows. “Oh, yeah, definitely. Goes without asking, I love games. If you two need any help putting everything together you know where I live.”

"They are not my friend. They have bested me for six years now.” Kit didn’t need the stairs to assist in amplifying how directionally challenged he already was. He wasn’t the best student by any means, but he didn’t like disappointing his professors. “You do have a good point. They do make the castle feel that much more alive, as if it has its own personality. It’s a wonderful part of magic.” Nodding to the other, Kit slid down onto the bench of the table, noting that the fake sky above them was beginning to change. Breakfast probably was right around the corner. “Awesome! We definitely may need some help herding people in, especially the younger ones, but I will let you know.”

Florence groaned a bit, frustrated at herself before she stood up, gently holding the glass shards. “Oh dear, I scared it!!” Florence desperately wanted to reach out and pet the cat, but did not want to set her canvas down. “Is you arm going to be alright, Kit?” Florence began walking with him toward the art room, a resigned look on her face.

"Don’t worry,” Kit assured as he swaddled the kitten in his arms in an attempt to soothe him. “He was just a bit startled by the noise, but it’s alright. I’ve faced far worse than a few scratches.” He brushed aside her concern, not wanting Florence to feel bad for the accident. “I found this little guy in a bush near the Forest. His eyes aren’t even open yet, so I think two pets got a little busy and multiplied. Perhaps without the owner of the female cat noticing, so I’m going to go back once I get this one warm and safe and see if I can find more of the litter.”

“I mean- yeah, we  c o u l d  go to the party, but that sounds like a crowded room full of gross sweaty bodies that smell like B.O.” Jace began, always a little anxious when it came to the whole concept of ‘parties’. “Or we could do something less horrible, like raid the kitchens and eat our weight in sweets.”

"That sounds like a fantastic alternative,” Kit agreed, nodding his head enthusiastically. “The parties don’t actually tend to be too bad but with this being the first of the year, I’m sure that it will be even more rowdy than normal.” Maybe the space would be good, considering no one could predict how the party may just add to the tensions already existing in the castle.

“uh huh,” leda stifled a laugh, shaking her head, “well, everyone’s so worried about mcgonagall, or castle security, or even the postponed quidditch match—-it’s just…. too much stress, you know? i’d invite the other houses but…. well, with just us we can be fairly sure fights won’t break out, and you know how tensions get between gryffindor and slytherin before their matches.”

"No, no, I agree. It should just be Hufflepuff. At least for this trial run.” Each House had their own vibe, and Hufflepuff tended to keep theirs warm and friend and open, fitting considering their spot next to the kitchens. “Everyone could use something to distract them and to have a little fun. Quidditch games usually just wind up with people more riled up than anything and this can be a way to be more chill and relaxed.”

Florence was making her way outside, a blank canvas under her arm, a few dirty bushes in one hand, and a few small glass pots of paint in the other hand. That is, until something distracted her gazed and her body collided with another, the pots slipping easily from her fingers and shattering against the stone floor. “Sorry, I’m sorry!” she exclaimed, cheeks flushed with embarrassment while she began picking up the glass shards.

The glass shattering was loud enough to disturb the kitten resting in his arms, the cat’s claws sinking into his arms. Holding back a wince, Kit kept a smile on his face as he bent down to assist Florence with picking up the glass. “No need to be sorry. No harm done, but do be careful of the glass.” Once most of the glass was gathered, he reached into his pocket with his free hand and gave his wrist a swish to help clean up the mess. “We can swing by the art room and grab some more.”

“Yeah. I like how the walls sort of melt into the ceiling, and thinking about the spells behind all this-” He gestured vaguely to the ceiling full of stars, “it’s pretty, but I think I appreciate it more than I’m amazed by it. And then outside, well, sunrises and stars and everything are kind of insane and amazing when they’re real and on such a large scale.” Eddie’s lips rose into a small smile. “Oh, so the moving stairs weren’t made to help students start the day in peace? Yeah, you’re right though. That was probably one of the worst sleepovers I’ve ever been to.” 

"It’s, well, I don’t know a better word for it than magical, even if that is a bit cliche, I suppose.” When Kit had first arrived at Hogwarts, he’d been awed by it all. Save for by the stairs. Those he had never appreciated. “The stairs have made me late to class on more than one occasion and some professors are understanding but others not so much.” Sitting up on the table, he extended an invitation to Eddie. “The last sleepover was awful, but the next one can be much better. Leda and I are wanting to put together a House game night, if you would be interested in joining us. It should be a lot of fun.”

Kit made a good point. Eddie hummed a noise of agreement before replying. “It probably would be, yeah. But I guess my half asleep self didn’t think of that.” He tilted his head to glance over at the older Hufflepuff beside him. “Though since the enchanted sky mimics the real sky we’ll probably be seeing the sunrise in here soon anyway. Not quite the same feeling as outside- a different sort of pretty I guess.” He smiled, eyes going back up to the ceiling of stars, “And, if we were outside we’d be missing out on laying on tables. Which is always fun.”

"An artificial sort of pretty. Not bad per say, but if you’re up, you may as well witness the real thing, yeah?” Even though Kit made the suggestion, he didn’t make a motion toward getting up. Eddie did make a valid point about the tables, and it took far less effort to remain where they were.  “This is far more fun than the forced sleepover during the lockdown. More tranquil and peaceful. I imagine that was the intention of the design, to have the students start the day at peace. Or maybe the Founders just wanted to show off, like with the constantly moving stairs.”

he rolled his eyes and sighed, annoyance completely visible. he was so tired of everyone walking on eggshells about their headmistress. “why do you all assume she’s so weak and won’t pull through this difficult situation? what she needs for all of us—excuse me, all of you, is to stop having such little faith in her.”

“Why do you assume that we think the worst will happen? As if we do not hope for her full recovery? Having faith does not mean that we have to make such insensitive jokes. The Headmistress is strong, but she is not immortal. Shall she recover, there is no coming back from what happened. For her, the others that were injured, for all of us that are still reeling in the aftermath. Your joking is hollow and terribly placed, if your intention was to show your faith.”

“that’s exactly what i was thinking. and i’m sure our friends in the kitchens would be willing to provide us with some snacks. it would be nice, and i even got a few games for the younger years too—including mousetrap, you dork—i think it’ll help boost morale. we all just need a night off, you know?”

"Hey, Mouse Trap is not just a game for the kids. It involves strategic thinking and maneuvering. Much like chess, but far more fun. This is by far the best idea that I’ve heard all week. We need something that bands us back together, reminds us tat we have each other’s backs. We are the House of the loyal and true, after all.”

Edgar was up obscenely early. It was never a good sign when you wandered into the Great Hall and the ceiling was still littered with stars, the tables utterly empty. But when he was awake he was awake, and sitting at (half laying on, really, with how much he sprawled) the Hufflepuff table and staring at the ceiling was his fate until enough time passed that he wouldn’t feel like too much of an arse waking up a house elf for food. He was so engrossed in his staring at the false stars that he didn’t notice the approaching person until they spoke, at which point he started, flailed abortively, and tried to play it off as cool in the matter of two seconds. “Morning.”

Kit often got up early in order to go and help assist Hagrid in making sure that all of the creatures were given their breakfasts. On his return back to the common room, he’d swung by the Great Hall to checkif the house elves were setting up breakfast yet to see if he could help considering he was already up when he saw his younger housemate laying across their table. Quick to join Edgar, Kit climbed up the table and laid back with his arms crossed underneath his head, grinning up at the fake stars. “Good morning,” he quipped in return. “You know, personally, I think watching the sunrise would be prettier than this, if you were wanting to appreciate a view this early in the day.”

max was relieved to hear the other was perfectly fine. not that he was worried about the hufflepuff, but he didn’t have to pretend like he cared about his feelings. hearing the other male’s question towards him about their class, he shrugged before finishing with his laces. “hell if i know, i wasn’t keeping track of time.” max, in fact, truly had no idea. he didn’t even know what classroom he was heading to, he had only followed the direction of a few slytherins he knew he had classes with. he rose from his squatted position. “what class are we going to?”

Max Flint wasn’t known for his pleasantries. He could be abrasive, but Kit could handle it. At least it wasn’t the sort of behavior that others exhibited that was far more uncomfortable to deal with. “Ah, are you sure you’re alright then? Rather odd to not even know where you are going or a roundabout idea of what time it is.” Even when he was his most flighty, he knew enough about his bearings to determine that much. “But to answer your question, we are going to Transfiguration, so I’d try to get ahold of yourself because Professor Weasley can pick up on the student’s who are off their game.”

“so, i know what happened the other day is serious and all, but can you imagine headmistress mcgonagall’s reaction to the explosion? i bet you she was blown away by the surprise.”

“I don’t have to tell you that now really is not the appropriate time for this. Headmistress McGonagall looks after all of us. The least she deserves from us is our respect and our hope that she pulls through.”

“kit! there you are! i’ve been looking for you—-i come bearing gifts!” leda set her bag down almost proudly, “not gifts, really, but—-i was in hogsmeade and tomes and scrolls was having a sale on board games and they had a few muggle ones so i thought—–game night in the common room tonight?”

"Gifts?” Curiosity colored Kit’s tone as he moved his way from the chair to down on his knees in front of the coffee table to admire the contents of the bag. “That’s brilliant thinking, Leda. We could gather everyone together, remind them all of our camaraderie while having fun. Did you by chance happen to get Mouse Trap?”

“oh, thank the heavens. we really do need some brightening up in the common room these days.” he responded as he let go of the door and shuffled towards where the other male was positioned inside the greenhouse. after hearing kit’s second remark and imagining the scene play out in his head, jaxon couldn’t help but burst out into laughter. “i’m sorry, i know it wouldn’t be funny if that honestly happened, but the image of it is bloody hilarious.” jax had laughed so hard he had to wipe away a few tears. “it’d be questionable as to who the real screamer would be.”

“Our common room tends to be better about it than most, but especially now, there’s no such thing as too much cheer.” Nor could there ever be too much laughter, but the fit that Kit broke into was enough to leave his shoulder’s shaking as his hands stopped with his project in order to cover his mouth as if that could mask the loud noise. “Merlin, wouldn’t that be something? I’m not sure that any sex is worth being screamed at to death for.”

        “What look?” Penelope tried to keep up an innocent expression, but she wasn’t sure how convincing it was, what with the wide smile she couldn’t quite keep at bay. “I don’t know how anyone who visits is gonna want to leave your home again after that happens. It sounds like heaven. Fair warning, you might find it hard to get rid of me.” Smile dimming slightly, she shrugged in response. “Oh, Psyche’s with my parents for now. After the explosion, I just figured — in case something happens again, I don’t want there to be any chance for her to be caught in the middle of it, you know? Prue offered to take her too, but this way she’s close enough to visit, at least. You could come with me sometime, if you want.”  

“That one. The one that makes it hard to say no to you. Or maybe it just has that influence on me because I’m a sucker.” And in ways, maybe he could be as he had had the wool pulled over his eyes a few time but with Penelope, it was different. She surely wouldn’t turn her back on him. “And who’s to say that wasn’t my plan, luring you in with cute animals?” He could understand her concern; to Kit, it was a legitimate one, and it was why he was grateful his pets already had been safe and secure at home. “It’s a shame she can’t be with you as I’m sure she’d be a comfort, but it’s for the best, for now, I think. But she’s not too far away. And see, that look is already having an effect on me because how could I say no to an invitation like that?”

“I’m sure we can find her. Are we talking about a splattering of spots or just a few? Any distinct pattern to it?”
